J .S. T)eoicaiion At the end of the life of an educational institution such as Norwood High School, it is well to pause and think of those unsung persons who supported the progress of this school with their time, their talents, and their prayers. The Senior Class ofl962 is deeply indebted to those per- sons who have carried our dreams in their hearts. It is with sincerity that we, the last graduating class of N. H. S. , express our deep appreciation to Norwood High School to whom we ded- icate this, the last edition of the Norwoodian. MISS BARBARA HOBGOOD to whom we, the Norwoodian staff, express our love and ap- preciation for her help and guidance on this - - our last Norwoodian! ScAoo CBoarcf C. J. LEE Treasurer - MRS. G. A. NICHOLS This year, as years before, the faculty of your school has had the opportunity to see each of you boys and girls in many varied school situations. Your teachers know that some students are able to get the greatestbenefit from different learning situations, while others seem to shut their eyes and ears as well as their minds to become as inanimate as the proverbial, Bump on a log. The end result of conduct of this type on the boys and girls literally tear the hearts out of their teachers. So it is with the greatest sincerity that I, as principal of your school, hope that you will have used this school year in the way that will bring you the greatest of happiness in your years and life to come. V. Football 1. Glass Jhsiort The date was August 28, 1950. The long-awaited day had arrived. Seventy-two timid happy children entered school, to be students in the first grade. We learned many valuable truths and skills and formed lasting friendships as we progressed through the primary and elementary grades. Upon completing the eighth grade we had a beautiful graduation program with our homeroom teachers - Miss Norwood, Mrs. Young, and Mr. Sims - presenting diplo- mas. The ninth grade, our first year in High School, was filled with many new experiences. Like all Green Freshmen, we got lost while exchanging classes and had to ask for directions, Mrs. Bumgarner, Mr. McLendon, and Mr. Owens, our homeroom teachers, were very helpful and guided us through those first hectic days of choosing our courses and making adjustments. Mr. M. L. Coggin, our new princi- pal, was also very helpful and patient in guiding us. Our year was filled with parties and interesting trips which included The Freshman Fling, Ice Capades, a trip to tlie water plant, a day ' s session in court, and a tour of the jailhouse in Albemarle. During our first year in high school, we found that it is not just one big round of parties; it is hard work requiring the best of one ' s ability. In the tenth grade we reconciled ourselves more or less to the fact that our best efforts were re- quired. Mrs. Crutchfield, Miss Caudle, and Mr. Owens added spice to this year. At last we were Juniors with only one more stop to make. Mrs. Bumgarner and Mrs. McNeill, our sponsors, helped us to add more happy memories to our rapidly growing collection. We achieved many things in our Junior year of which we can be proud; A play, Rest Assured ; a beautiful and equally successful Junior-Senior Banquet built around the theme, Some Enchanted Evening ; the Junior issue of the Rambler; and money-making projects. Other happenings of interest were the State Beta Convention, the parties - especially the Valentine Party given in our honor by the Seniors; and the ivy-chain pro- cessional at Commencement. Seniors at last! Now has come our final year in dear old N. H. S. In fact, we are the last class to graduate from Norwood High School, as the schools in the Stanly County system are consolidating. This year everyone has spent his time in busy activity: managing the concession stand at football games and booths at the Halloween Carnival; working on the Norwoodian and the Rambler; our play, Headin ' for a Weddin’ ; filing applications for college; and of course those odoriferous chemistry experiments! Another important event to us was the receiving of our class rings! We really had fun showing them off to everyone. Our many clubs also kept us busy with extracurricular activities. We were proud to have a Merit Finalist from Norwood. Our sponsors, Mrs. McNeill and Mr. Hatley were very helpful and understanding and helped make our last year a successful one. Sponsors, we can never express in words the love and appreciation we feel, but somehow we think you understand. We realize how lucky we were to have you as our advisors. Now our school days at Norwood High are over. We hope that our sponsors, gradeparents, mascots, school teachers, classmates, and our principal will remember us with all the love and appreciation with which we shall remember them. In our hearts these years will ever remain as unforgettable memory ! Uhe ropJiecy Ten years ago, on May 30, 1962, a class of fifty-nine seniors graduated from Norwood High School. Being the last group of seniors to walk across the stage and receive our diplomas gave us not only a sense of superiority but also a feeling of nostalgia to be leaving dear ole N. H, S. Then we went our separate ways, each pursuing his chosen career. And now, ten years later, here we are, classmates of ' 62, on the Moon, holding our first reunion, awaiting the arrival of a space craft from Mars, Jane Price and Jill Lucas, secretaries at Cape Canav- eral, invited the class to be on hand for the outcome of the new space project in which Jackie Wilson is to travel from the Moon to Mars and back in less than two hours. We have assembled to congratu- late him when he returns. While waiting for Jackie’s return, we are having a good time hearing each other ' s experiences. First we meet Bonnie Aycock and Pat Smith, who are now executive secretaries. Next we see Ellen Watson, who says she is a receptionist for a heart specialist. Dr. Gerald Thompson, and that on the same street are the shingles of outstanding dentists; Dr. Gary Poplin, Dr. Bobby Hathcock, and Dr. Larry Morton with Sandra Crump, Judy Mabry, and Cynthia Mauldin as their efficient assistants. This group has certainly retained its vitality! In another group we talk to classmates who are now nurses; Kathryn Mabry, Sandra Lee, Joyce Page, Joyce Dennis, and Caroline Blalock. Ambulance drivers who are sitting near by, hoping they will not be needed on this occasion, are Danny Morgan, Bryce Kimrey, and Bobby Thompson. Chat- ting with these are William Story and Keith Preslar, building contractors. We have just had a chat with the school teachers of our class, finding that Mary Ellen Guffy and Louise Avert are teaching at Woman ' s College. Yonina Smith, Mary McBride, Paulette Marbry, Karen Hasty, Ruth Ann Morris, Deloris Morgan, and Gerald Mabry seem very happy as elementary teachers, a group to which I, Linda Thompson, also belong. Leaving the teachers talking shop, we next run into the former Ag boys - Crowell Bowers, Jimmy Lilly, Butch Mabry, and James Hinson - yho are busy analyzing the Moon’s topsoil. They tell us that they are employed in a big agricultural industry owned by Steve Austin, Lonnie Dennis, and Jimmy Price, who are directing this analysis. Excitement mounts as Jackie ' s return time draws nearer, and we hurriedly try to find a few mo- ments with every classmate! First we hear Helen Hopkins, Judy Brock, and Elver Gibson talk about their happily-married status. Then we come upon James Morton, a famous lawyer, conversing with his private investigators, Jerry Ray Kimrey and C. H. Bowers. With them is Tommy Swaringen, who tells his experiences as a player on the Moon Trotters Basketball team. We greet another group of classmates - Elaine Livingston, Cassie Blalock, Emily Carpenter, and Marsha Howell - social directors on a large space ship, which makes weekly trips to the Moon. Talk- ing with them about a return flight, while they are busily gathering comet ' s hair for their beauty sa- lons, are famous hair stylists; Dianne Dennis, Emily Harris, Judy Kimrey, and Lovenia Lisk. I, Pat- ty Moore, also a hair stylist, join this vivacious group just as J. W. Faircloth strides over the lunar surface with his designs for a United States embassy on the moon, a project of which he is to be the interior decorator. As usual, his creations are simply out of this world ! Then the much -hoped -for moment arrives when someone shouts, Here comes the space ship! Instantly we converge upon the scene as Jackie, with the joy of success, climbs out to our thundering applause, ready to emcee this grand occasion; The reunion of the Class of ' 62!
