The date was August 27, 1947, when the long-awaited day arrived. How happy we were our first day in school! As we progressed through the primary and elementary grades, we learned valuable truths and skills and formed lasting friendships - with our teachers as well as with each other. Upon completion of the eighth grade we solemnized this occasion in a beautiful graduation program with Mr. Short presenting diplomas. Adding to our excitement was a congratulatory note from our Congressman, Hugh Q. Alexander. High School! What excitement that word caused. This milestone of achievement opened for us a new world of adventure. The ninth grade - our first year in this new world. Like all Green Freshmen we got lost while exchanging classes and had to ask for directions. Mrs McNeill and Mr. Pierce, our homeroom teachers, were very helpful and guided us through those first hectic days of choosing our courses and making adjustments. Our year was filled with parties and interesting trips - Ice Capades, State Fair, and a day ' s session in criminal court. We staged a beautifully executed formal dance at the McLeod cabin, and we also had a Christmas party at the Guffy ' s. During our first year in high school we found that the old cliche, All that glitters is not gold, to be true. In other words, high school life is not just one big round of parties; it is hard work requiring the best of one ' s ability. So, in the tenth grade, we reconciled ourselves more or less to this fact. Mr. C. S. Richardson and Mrs. E. E. Crutchfield added spice to this year. Mrs. Crutchfield endeared herself to us by encouraging us to de- velop our abilities. Mr. Richardson with his caustic ways, for which everyone remembers and loves him, was an added joy to all our activities. The Ice Capades and our many parties were highlights of this year. At last we were Juniors - with only one more stop to make. Mrs. McNeill and Mrs. Mildred Archer, our sponsors, helped us to add more happy memories to our rapidly growing collection; and we achieved many things in our Junior year of which we can be proud. A romantic gypsy musical, Chonita ; a beautiful and equally successful Junior-Senior Banquet built around the theme, Stairway to the Stars; the Junior issue of the Rambler; and, as money-making projects, the concession stand at basketball games, three Halloween booths and candy sales - these were the red-letter days of the year. Other happenings of interest were the Ice Capades, the State Beta Convention, the parties - especially the Valentine Party given in our honor by the Seniors - and the daisy-chain processional at Commencement. The most important event to us, however, was the receiving of our class rings! Up and down the halls walked sixty-three happy Juniors, showing off their shiny, new rings which symbolized eleven years of hard work. In these eleven years of our school days, there was one who walked with us daily - shared our joys and loved us in everything - our beloved principal, Mr. B. G. Short. In our hearts he will ever remain an unforgettable memory. Seniors at last! Now had come our last year in Norwood High - the year in which everyone spent his time in busy activity - managing the concession stand at football games and booths at the Halloween Carnival; working on the Norwoodian and the Rambler; filing applications for college and deciding what to do after graduation; and, of course, those (pardon the word) stinky Chemistry experiments! Our many clubs also kept us busy with extracurricular activities. The Christmas Cantata by the Glee Club, the holiday dance and con- vention plans by the Betas, - the Tri-Hi-Y Club and it ' s basketball games, College Day at Albemarle, and College tests. We were very proud of the five students from Norwood who ranked among the top ten in the Achievement Tests at Pfeiffer - one of whom was rated first in the county. Mr. M. L. Coggin, our new prin- cipal, was extremely proud of us, and to him we should like to express our appreciation for his wise counseling and patience through this, our last year. Among our most cherished possessions are the memories of our Senior play, Junior-Senior Banquet, the many parties in our honor, and our wonderful sponsors, Miss Perrie Davis and Mrs. A. D. McNeill. Miss Davis, a new member of the faculty, a resident of Cliffside, North Carolina, has endeared herself to us by her sweet, pleasant ways and thoughtfulness. We hope her first year in the teaching profession has been as pleasant for her as it has been for us. Mrs. McNeill has been a constant source of encouragement in our lives throughout our high school career; she has been our mother away from home. Sponsors, we can never express in words the love and appreciation we feel, but somehow we think you under- stand. We realize how lucky we were to have you as our advisors. As the curtain rings down on the final act of Our School Days at Norwood High,” we hope that our sponsors, gradeparents, schoolteachers, classmates, and our principal will remember us with all the love and thankfulness with which we shall remember them. Too, we hope that we all shall be a little better for having known each other. COMMENCEMENT! The Curtain closes! The Golden Age is before us! Dolores Hathcock and Mabon Kimrey, Historians Rocket 59 Blasts Off! It is May 23, 1969! The Rocket ' 59 is loading to leave for the Moon. Pilot Larry Moyle and co-pilot Kenneth Story are warming up the motors while Cecile Woodall, the Stewardess, greets the travelers. Hostess Frances Britt is giving out pillows and making everyone comfortable; even the mechanics, Don Phillips and Eugene Morton, are busy checking the fuel line. It is an excited, talkative group who has assembled to begin the flight in celebration of their tenth anniversary. As Larry and I, prophets of the Class of ’59, greet each passenger, we find that most of the classmates are eager to take off on this out-of-this-world trip. Climbing aboard first is Tommy Underwood, followed by Calvin Haire, now two distinguished artists with Walt Disney. They are joined by a world-renowned psychologist, Marion McLeod, who anticipates catching moonbeams for further research; and by Jo Lynn Avett, author of a best seller, The Meta- physical Effect of Moonbeams Upon Human Behavior; and Gwen Guffy, Dean of Women of Columbia University, recently voted the Woman of the Year.” After taking off I, busy with my duties, see that everything is all right in each compartment of the ship. As I visit the kitchen, I see Carter Blalock, one of New York ' s finest chefs, preparing the food, as requested by his fellow students who remembered how good his cooking was during school. Alfred Webb, Carter ' s assistant, is busy at the sink washing dishes, as he often did after football games. Passing through the kitchen into the lounge, I spot Lane Mabry and Mabon Kimrey mixing Pepsis and Coca-Colas at the bar as they learned to do in the Snack Shack at good Old Norwood Hi. Sitting around in the lounge are Jackie Livingston, a designer, and Sylvia Thomp- son, a beautician, talking to Moretha Wilson, chief secretary to the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Norma Kay Hearne and Ruth Tucker, two very successful private secretaries. As I pass by, I hear Jackie say that Vivian Polk and Helen Swaringen are happily married and sharing duplex apartments, continuing their friendship as during school days. Moretha remarks that Brenda Lee and Eunice Mabry are also happily married and living in Norwood. While climbing the stairs to the second floor, I hear music and singing. Looking into Compartment X, I see the musical group of the Class of 59. i n this group are the Floyd Brothers, Mahlon and Wahlon, who are now making records for RCA; Elizabeth Byrd, a prominent singer, and Lynda McNeill, one of the finest organ players, now plays for Billy Graham on his crusades. Eddie Lowder, a playboy who visits all the night clubs, is telling Elizabeth how good she was in the floor show at the Stork Club on his recent visit to New York City. Off in one corner I see Rebekah Culp, a Miss America winner, and Diann Hinson, a dancing instructor, reminiscing the good times they had together during school. As our rocket zooms higher, I hear the rumble of Men ' s voices. Trying to find where the noise is coming from, I look into the dining room and there sitting around a table is a group of the boys (now men) of the class, looking at the small car model designed by two famous car designers, Cletus Huneycutt and Larry Lowder, and made by Homer Edward ' s Mercury Corporation. The racers of the car, Larry Hill and Phillip Poplin, are telling about their latest adventures in trying out the car. Keith Almond and Henry Rivers, tag team Wrestlers, are talking to Herman Blalock, Notre Dame ' s coach, with his star tackle, Darol Caudle, and Jimmy Kimrey, a famous baseball player of the New York Yankees. Going to check the first-aid kits, whom should I find bu t the medical group of the class - Doctor Willard Griggs, Jr. , Doctor Vernon Tarlton, with their nurses, Dolores Hathcock, Faye Carriker, and Virginia Lomax. What a time they are having with those first-aid kits! Zooming through space at a high speed, the rocket is now in close proximity to the Moon. Jimmy Colson, the agriculturalist and Bobby Blalock, the scientist, are anxious to reach their destination and start comparing notes with William Johnson, the famous astronomer, and other notables in their respective fields. Tommy Hathcock, a construction engineer, has been building hotels for the Hilton chain and schools to house the growing population. Susan Weathersbee is going to be the social director in one of the Hilton Hotels and Elaine Lee is to be a school teacher in the elementary grades. A light flashes on and I ask them to fasten their safety belts. The long journey is ended, and we land upon the Moon! As we leave the space-ship, we invade one of the Moon-a-Burger restaurants, a chain owned by money tycoon Larry Simpson (he was a whiz at making What-a-Burgers, remember?). Inside we see Bobby Deese, who owns several tobacco plantations, lunching with Melvin Kimrey and Jerry Dennis, millionaire cigarette manufacturers. Munching on our Moon-Burger, we see (the pilot and stewardess) are reflecting on our flight and are happy to see that each of our class mates is a big success in life. Never has a class enjoyed such a heavenly tenth anniver- sary as the graduates of 1959, now living in The Golden Age! I.
