Class History -Dreams of the Past We were an excited group of mischievous six-year olds, who entered Norwood school on a lovely August day in 1940. How proud we were when we learned to write our names and say the A B C’s under the careful guidance of Mrs. Mary Lumsden and Miss Pearl Smith. We were really getting to be big boys and girls as we sailed along grade by grade, learning the three R ' s and participating in chapel pro- grams, operettas, popularity contests, toy bands, and May Day exercises. Having completed four years of primary school life, we were promoted to the grammar grades where we rapidly made progress in making new acquintances as we strived to attain understanding in history, spelling, health, and arithmetic, Each of us wishing and longing for the day when we would be High School students, learned our lessons which took on a more likeable appearance. September 13, 1948-39 green Freshmen entered high school with Mr. J. M. Day as our homeroom teacher. August 25, 1949- We sophisticated Sophs returned to school for another year. We were 35 in number, and Mrs. Robert Finley was our homeroom teacher. August 28, 1950- As 34 Juniors, we assembled in our homeroom with Miss Bess Ivey as our sponsor. November 30, 1950-0 happy day! Our class rings arrived! March 23, 1951- Junior-Senior Banquet held in old gymnasium, theme: Apple Blossom Time . Pan- sy Lee was chosen Apple Blossom Queen. April 6, 1951- Junior Square Dance and party in old gymnasium. May 9, 1951- Seniors gave us an ice cream party in the home of Mary Ellen Skidmore. We enjoyed a hayride afterwards. September 3, 1951- Gladly, but sadly, we, as a class of 29-7 boys and 22 girls gathered in the Seni- or classroom to begin our last year of high school days. We were delighted to learn that Mrs. A. D. Mc- Neill would again be the Senior sponsor. September 7, 1951- Class officers elected. September 13, 1951- We chose gradeparents, mascots, and Junior Marshals. September 14, 1951- Annual and Rambler staffs were chosen. September 18, 1951- The photographers from Delmar studios made individual pictures of students mascots, gradeparents, and faculty. September 25, 1951- Orders for personal cards and caps and gowns were placed. September 28, 1951- The Seniors enjoyed a weinner roast at Morrow Mt. October 17, 1951- The Seniors, mascots, and their sponsor journeyed to Ross Studio in Albermarle to have their pictures made in caps and gowns. October 26, 1951- The school sponsored a Halloween Carnival. Don Brewer was crowned King. November 6, 1951- Superlatives were chosen. November 16,17, 1951- Seniors presented four one-act plays, High Jinks at Hollister Hall , Wilbur Takes His Medicine , Whodunit , and Friday Afternoon at a Village School in the school auditorium. November 20, 1951- Our gradeparents entertained us at the V.F.W. Hut, which was beautifully dec- orated. November 30, 1951- The Seniors elected Annie Ruth Smith as a candidate for Miss Merry Christ- mas.” We also attended College Day at Albermarle High School. December 4 and 5, 1951- Juniors, Seniors, and chaprones attended the Ice Capades at the William Reynolds Colesium in Raleigh. December 20, 1951- Senior Christmas party at the Collins Aikman auditorium. December 21, 1951-January 2, 1952- Christmas holidays. January 15-17, 1952- Mid-term exams. February 14, 1952- Peggy Mabry chosen Queen of Hearts , Gene Hinson chosen King of Hearts , and their attendants, Naomi Whitley and Barry Russell, reigned during a Valentine program which was held in the school auditorium. March- Junior-Senior Banquet. April 14, 1952- Holiday, Easter Monday. April- Arrival of invitation. May 1- May Day Program. May- Senior Banquet May- party for Juniors May- Arrival of caps and gowns. May- Farewell Party May 18-23, 1952- Graduation! 16
