Don Brewer Walter Lee Burr -- Attorneys Eugene Blalock Sammy Morris Bud Eddins Gene Hinson Barry Russell - - Witnesses V l Class History -Dreams of the Past We were an excited group of mischievous six-year olds, who entered Norwood school on a lovely August day in 1940. How proud we were when we learned to write our names and say the A B C’s under the careful guidance of Mrs. Mary Lumsden and Miss Pearl Smith. We were really getting to be big boys and girls as we sailed along grade by grade, learning the three R ' s and participating in chapel pro- grams, operettas, popularity contests, toy bands, and May Day exercises. Having completed four years of primary school life, we were promoted to the grammar grades where we rapidly made progress in making new acquintances as we strived to attain understanding in history, spelling, health, and arithmetic, Each of us wishing and longing for the day when we would be High School students, learned our lessons which took on a more likeable appearance. September 13, 1948-39 green Freshmen entered high school with Mr. J. M. Day as our homeroom teacher. August 25, 1949- We sophisticated Sophs returned to school for another year. Oh hi, Ann! Guess what? I ' ve just had the most wonderful dream! I was sitting here thinking and dreading writing the pro- phecy because it ' s so hard to do, and fell asleep. You know what? I guess I had just thought about it so much that I dreamed about it. I ' ll try to see if I can remember it all. Ann, take this down, will you? You bet, Nomi! I ' ll tell my dream just as if it were happening about ten years in the future: There was a great crowd gathered out-side Madison Square Garden. Two great undefeated basketball teams were playing. Who should be the captains of the winning teams but Louise Mc- Lendon and Barry Russell, who were voted best Athletes by our classmates of ' 52. Nearly all our classmates were out to see Barry and Louise. There was Sammy Morris, who was coach at U.N.C. He had seat- ed beside him Peggy Price and Patsy Ross Lee, who were both stenographers in Washington. Molly Gibson and Jereline Biles came walking in, obviously taking a vacation from all their house- work. And guess who I saw yelling for the teams? None other than Alice Thompson and Bettie Rose Randall, two teachers at the Uni- versity of Virginia. Don Brewer was there in his army uniform, surrounded by girls, as usual. Bud Eddins, a lawyer, came in with a gang of classmates in his old Ford. There was June Curtis, who was teaching music in Hollywood ; Pansy Lee, voted Miss Popular- ity at U.N.C. ; Betty Harris, a dress designer for M.G.M. Studio; Betty Crump, a doctor in Winston-Salem; and Peggy Mabry, dress- ed fit to kill in a mink outfit from her original shoppe. Next, I saw Eugene Blalock, who was then overseer at C. A., and Walt just back from his own television program. Peggye Talent supplied music for his comical programs, making a grand entrance was Ann Smith, who had made outstanding success as a model in New York. Coming along beside her was Olivene Howell, who was looking for a nice investment for all the money she was making on her ranch. Oh yes, Betty Howell was there, too. I guess she was taking time off from her fashionable beauty salon. The honored guest was Gene Hinson, Mayor of New York City. Next, Eunice Simpson and Buna Hathcock came in; they were both nurses at Duke Hospital. Lovell Moose was there celebrating her tenth wedding anniversary. Everyone was overjoyed to see Evelyn Livingston, who has just come back from teaching in Africa. That concludes my dream. Well, Nomi, that takes care of everyone but you. Let me prophesy for you. I prophesy that you have made your debut at the Metropolitan Opera and were a great success. Prophets -- Naomi Whitley, Ann Smith 17 Can this be real? Coke For Two Royalty of N. H. S. Hey, Barry! Homes where truth and love and security and faith Will be realities, not dreams. We are the Future Homemakers of America. We face the future with warm courage. And high hope. OFFICERS: President, Annie Ruth Smith; Vice President, Naomi Whitley; Secretary-treasurer, Nancy Honeycutt; Reporter, Barbara Hinson 36 faced I believe in the future of farming, with a faith born not of words but of deeds -- a- chievements won by the present and past generations of farmers; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come up to us from the struggles of former years. I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so -- for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.
