CLASS HISTORY It was a happy group of six-year olds, who, on a lovely day in August of the year 1937, waited im- patiently in our seats for our first lessons to begin. Excited at the prospect of coming to school for the first time, we all hurriedly began getting acquainted and making friends, on that first day sure that all would be wonderful — just play, never any work! We soon found out differently, of course, for those ABC ' s seemed never to be able to penetrate through those little heads of ours. It all seemed so worthless — Why couldn ' t we all just go out and play? However, we soon began to like even our work, looking forward always to play periods. We had operettas, chapel programs, and May Day Festivals. AM that was beautiful and we were all sorry, when, after four years of primary school life, we were to be promoted to the Gram- mar Grades; so we jumped from fun and fellow- ship and the 3 R ' s to tasks a little harder and more complicated. In Grammar School, we rapidly made progress in the matter of making new ac- quaintances and getting accustomed to our new way of living. Activities continued to give us much joy and even our lessons took on a more likable appearance, while in our hearts, each of us wished for and longed fervently for, the day when we would be High School students. Finally the great day came! We took another important step and were students of the great Nor- wood High School. On the first day of our new surroundings and new faces, were were frightened and at the same time delighted — frightened because we were seeing so many new and strange people, and delighted because we had at last reached this height. We stayed together, a scared group of chil- dren, and wished heartily that we were back in dear old Grammar School with those friends and activi- ties we had known for the last three years. We were so lost and bewildered. Looking around us, we wondered if the time would ever come when we would be like those Seniors walking down the hall in a laughing group as if they were really happy, and not self-conscious as we were. The Seniors and Juniors held an especial place in our favor, for were they not the two classes who had such grand times, and of which we so longed to be a part? After three years in High School, we had become used to all the excitement that went on around us, and in fact we were quite a large part of it. We were then Juniors, and that year we had some per- fectly lovely times, taking time out from our studies to give parties and a Christm as pageant and the Junior-Senior Banquet. For a while, we kept the Seniors guessing as to how and when they would be honored. Then on the night of April 16, we all had a marvelous time at the most beautiful ban- quet anyone could dream of. Miss Bess Ivey was our Junior sponsor, and no one could have wished for a more generous, understanding, and sympathetic teacher than this lovely blue-eyed lady. Then came the exciting day when we received our class rings. That was on the fifteenth of May and was one of the highlights of the whole school life. By this time, we had begun to think seriously of our future. Some of us had already decided what our life work would be, with some of us choosing college, others business schools, and still others different phases of life. By the time that we re- turned to school for our last year, most of us had decided what we wanted most in life. Now we reign as Seniors! All our dreams are coming true. With the loss of four of our girls, namely, Anna Carrol Johnson, Connie Lee, Betty Jo Traywick, and Mary Ross Whitley, who during the summer took unto themselves husbands, we finish our last year of High School — our Senior year. We are in number thirty-two, with the addition of Bill Crook, who was a late comer to our class, join- ing us after Christmas. We are directed by Miss Helen Sanford of Laurinburg, and we all love her and adore her sincerely, envying all other classes who will have her as their Senior leader. Now we are looking forward to, and yet dread- ing, graduation — for it means that we must leave this place where we have all had so much fun to- gether, these friends whom we shall never forget and shall wish it had not passed so quickly. Looking back over the last twelve years, we recall wistfully the joys and disappointments of our school life. Those memories will never fade, and we shall al- ways think of Norwood High School with love and adoration. We have had some marvelous times in our school days, and in these next four months of our last days together, hope to continue to do so. Some of the highlights of this last year, which have been and remain to be important to us are listed here: CLASS HISTORY September 13, 1948 — Return to school, begin- ning our last year together. We, in this manner, do dispose of our possessions. To the dear old school, we would just like to leave. We also leave to the school any coke bottles and big wads of gum which may have been left behind. We, the boys, leave Mr. Short a new katey ' ' (with three holes) to use on other students. We also leave our pleasant memories of our good times together and even of our bad times with katey . To the faculty, we leave all the other students in High School, and hope they will be pleased with them as much as they have been with us. We leave the Junior Class our position as Seniors of Norwood High School, and may they fill it well.
