Ab ll , fi As graduation and the end of school approach, students will be sharing final activities with friends and classmates they may never see again. After graduation, job opportunities, higher education, orrmilitary service may force students to relocate. This yearbook will be a link to the past as we move into the future. lt is a graphic and pictorial history of the l985-l986 school year. Pictures of elementary buildings and events will prompt recollections of earlier times. Photographs and copy from this year will also evoke fond memories. Before last year's yearbook was even distributed, plans were being formulated for Pennon '86. New innovations and graphic effects were suggested. The staff Cpictured herej made decisions in a attempt to represent permanently in print the highlights and activities of the l985-86 school year. When the class of I986 gathers for re- unions, this book will serve again to recall former classmates and faculty members and to refresh memories about years past. To the sophomores and juniors, plans for Pennon '87 are being discussed. To the seniors, the Pennon staff wishes you health, prosperity, and happiness. Good Luck. ROW l, C. North Irwin School , A four room brick building was erected in l895 at Web- ster Avenue. ln the beginning only two of the four rooms were used, but by l925 the building was overcrowded. Financial restraints prohibited the construction of a larger building. ln I934, the Civil Works Program helped to build the present structure. Dedicated in l935, the new building boasted one of the largest stages in the area. North Irwin was closed in June l982. Westmoreland City School V ln l874, an elementary school was founded on the site of First Street in Westmoreland City. The building contained two classrooms accomodating students of all grade levels. The one room struc- ture was replaced in l9l5 by a four room brick building. To handle the increased school population, a four room annex was added in l929. Cir- cleville had the distinction of being the first school in the area to have a cafeteria. The cafeteria was es- tablished in l945 by the PTA and later operated by the school dis- trict. On January 29, three buses of seniors and chaperones ventured to Seven Springs for a fun-filled night of amuse- ment and skiing. As the buses left Norwin High School, everyone was provided with a snack of sandwiches, pota- to chips, fruit, and beverage. The evening provided se- niors with an opportunity to ski, swim, or relax and watch others display their skill on the slopes. Capponi Any Number Can Die, the l985 fall play was quite successful. A comedy-mystery in three acts by Fred Carmichael, the play was directed by Mr. Dwyer with student assistant Kamala Ramaswamy. As the play commences, Chuck CJohn Toncichj and Judy CCourtney Foranj dis- cover an old mansion after rain spoils their picnic. They imagine what might have hap- pened at the mansion in the past. As Act One begins, we enter the home of the late Cedric Maxwell. The family has gathered for the reading of the will. Roger Masters QNed Salopekj, the will reader, has an intrinsic role in this play. Sally Van Viller QDana Carleoj inherits her Uncle Ce- dric's wealthi Celia Lathrop CJody Swen- dermanj is next inline. Two detec- tives, Hannibal Hix CKirk Yenerallj and Sal- ly's supposed Aunt Ernestine Wintergreen fBeth Thomasj work together to solve the murders. Everyone is a suspect. Next on the agenda was the long awaited Spring Show. America's Music, held May I6 and I7. This concert was a collage of America's music, past and pre- sent. The accomplishments of the Norwin Basketball Team this season can be attributed to hard work and dedication plus talent. Most of the varsity squad had been together since their sophomore year, either as a varsity, junior varsity member, or a combination of both. After a summer of leagues and a semi-successful year in l983-84, the Knights as juniors, contributed greatly to a I7 win 8 loss record. Again last summer most of the players participat- ed in summer camps and leagues to further improve their skills. With the addition of sophomore Steve Yaniga, this senior dominated team has realized one of the most suc- cessful hoop campaigns in Norwin Basketball history. This yearbook would never have been possible if it had not been for some truly wonderful people. A big thanks goes to the yearbook staff members who met sixth period and helped to identify pictures and proofread copy. A new pen goes to Bethany for her enthusiastic approach to drawing the good layouts. Thank you, also, to the staff members who gladly gave up study halls to work in the Pennon office and who stayed after school brainstorming headlines. Congratulations goes to Jodi Watson and Joslyn Winnie, our student photographers, and Albert Kianesse of Buchman's Studios for the wonderful pictures in this book. Thank you Annette Forsythe, Dawn King, and Karen Lemack for the excellent typing of copy at a moments notice. ln addition, we would like to extend our warm appreciation to our eight associate editors-Jennifer Colinear's bubbly copy could al- ways be counted on when we were at a loss for words, a big hand goes to Kelly Conroy for her work on the junior and sophomore pages, to our Leonardo Da Vinci, Patti Gillette, for her artistic abilities on the Lifestyle pages, to Kari Militzer for supervising the candid photos, the organization of club photos can be contributed to Kathy Priatko, the faculty pages are the work of Kristin Shrump who never ceased to tick- le our fancy with her witty remarks, the sports terminology and identification were the efforts of Larry Trenga, and finally to Jodi Walters whose time and labors produced the quality layouts for Pennon '86. Here's to youlll Our deep appreciation goes to Jim Jackson of Jostens Printing and Publishing Division. Without your help and insight, State College would never have known what we really wanted. Thank you Mr. Peduzzi, Mr. Lann, and Mr. Yates for permitting us to disturb the normal running of this school with our picture taking. Our gratitude goes to Mr. Boyd and Mrs. Fulmer for supplying us with student rosters which made our jobs easier. We want to thank the following teachers: Mrs. Boyd, Ms. Costellic, Mr. Donnelly, Dr. Guerrieri, Mr. Martin, Mr. McCorkle, Mr. Vernail. and Mrs. Watkoski for putting up with our tardiness, excuses, and early departures from class when we were pressed for deadlines. Also, thank you Mr. Polivka for answering our numerous questions and for taking photos for this book. To the businesses and their advertisements, patrons, friends, and subscribers, we thank you for helping to subsidize the cost of our book. To our special friends who put up with our moodiness and our oath of silence concerning Pennon '86-Thank you. You will never know how much you helped us get through those down days with your smiles and encouraging words. To our third period study hall buddies, Kris- tin, Melanie, and Wendi, whose crazy antics kept us all in stitches, we'll miss you. A round of applause goes to our parents whose suppers were disrupted to come and pick us up from our long after school meetings. Thanks so much for your love and support. You're the greatest! Last, but certainly not least, THANK YOU Mrs. Barbara A. Shrump, the driving force behind Pennon '86. Not only were you our advisor. you were our dear friend who was always willing to offer your support and guidance. Among your many qualities, unselfishness and pride for the yearbook and the school stand out foremost in our admiration for you. Thanks for sustaining our after school hunger with your end- less supply of goodies. We will always remember you, the Mad Typist, alone at home behind the typewriter doing what you enjoy mostl The cure for your paper abuse Cto usj is a trip down SOUTHllllll We'll never forget the times we've had together. We love youll For anyone we have forgotten, thank you. Your help' was greatfully appreciated. To next year's Pennon staff-Good Luck! We hope that you have as gratifying and nervewracking, but enjoyable time as we had putting Pennon '86 together. To everyone in the school, Good Luck and Thank You.
