Three decades ago George Orwell warned of the evils of a totalitarian state in his novel l984. But as the real l984 appeared, it wasn't Big Brother that we feared but rather education. Critics of education are making what most young people take for granted into a major social and political issue, and new remedies to the ills of education are suggested almost every day. As the Class of '84 reaches for that coveted diploma, echoes of What's wrong with education cloud his mind. Experts tell of neglect in reading and writing skills. Others lament the fact that not enough math and sciences are being taught. Statistics show that only 252, of all high school students are taking more than two years of science, and according to the CARNEGIE REPORT, Science is vital. Then there are the haunting questions. ls there too much emphasis on sports? Should teachers be required to take com- petency tests? Will merit pay for teachers lead to better educa- tion? Could the school year be lengthened? Is there enough attention being given to social activities? Adding to the confusion of the education dilemma is a cry for more computer literacy, while others clamour for a back to basics move. Even President Reagan came out with a plea for better discipline in the nation's schools. Look for education to be a major issue in the Presidential Campaign of l984. Pennsyl- vania as well as other states are mandating massive doses of curriculum change by the l985-86 school year. There undoubtedly is and will continue to be a lot of opinions and criticisms formulated regarding education. Hopefully high schools across the country will pull together and discuss the serious educational problems which are facing them. The Nor- win School District's current contemplation of a curriculum change is setting an example from which all of these school districts could benefit. Is Norwin getting the job done? Perhaps PENNON '84 will shed some light on the subject. I984 As Education ls A Target Of Criticism, Norwin Continues To Excell As It Keeps The Door Oper For Positive Change. - 1' Plasmas Norwin faculty members take a course in computers in order to keep up with computer revolution . Next year every graduating senior will have a course in basic computer understanding . Top ranking seniors in the Class of '84 are Claudia Ruzina and Wendy Weyant. Both girls are cheerleaders and plan a future in medical related fields.
