Webster defines a senior as a person who is superior, and he couldn't have more adequately or competently described the Norwin class of '84, for we are indeed superior. Why are we superior-because we've had the guidance and instruction of a superior Norwin faculty. We have been confronted with multitudinous challenges and hardships in our sophomore, junior, and senior years, but because of the faculty's support we have overcome these obstacles and become mature, capable adults with high goals and aspirations. They have always been willing to bend an ear or lend a hand to anyone who needed help with a problem. Nothing is out of our reach. Upon graduation, the world will be ours to explore, improve, and enjoy. Most of us will begin totally new lives, socialize with new groups of people and, in some instances, move to new states or countries. But despite the distances that may separate us in the future, there will always be a bond linking us together-a bond comprised of our cherished high school memories. We will always remember the two month strike which delayed our entrance into our sophomore year, the countless football and basketball games we attended, the numerous dances we enjoyed, the unending finals we took, and, of course, the prom. We will never forget the lasting friendships we made and both the good and bad times we shared together. Our senior year contained special moments-moments which shouldn't be forgotten. For this reason, the Pennon '84 has attempted to capture these cherished memories of our special, final year at Norwin High School in this unique edition of the Pennon. As we approach our future as products of caring teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators of Norwin High School, we should always remember that the future is not a result of choices among different paths offered by the present, but a place that is created-created first in mind and will, created next in activity. The future isn't some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination. . 1-fi' Sports Pages I67-2I5 ull I Activities IOS-I66 .A ..-W ,Nti - L L Kr' gigQIsi'3f'?r Wi QLEN35 gg ststt st .S tsiis r tt,Q M ttttt tssts t Faculty Pages 80-HO K5 Llnderclassmen 49-79 ,H Seniors Pages I7 48 , . But Not At The Expense Of The Arts, Social Sciences, And Vocational Studies. 5 Three decades ago George Orwell warned of the evils of a totalitarian state in his novel l984. But as the real l984 appeared, it wasn't Big Brother that we feared but rather education. Critics of education are making what most young people take for granted into a major social and political issue, and new remedies to the ills of education are suggested almost every day. As the Class of '84 reaches for that coveted diploma, echoes of What's wrong with education cloud his mind. Experts tell of neglect in reading and writing skills. Others lament the fact that not enough math and sciences are being taught. Statistics show that only 252, of all high school students are taking more than two years of science, and according to the CARNEGIE REPORT, Science is vital. Then there are the haunting questions. ls there too much emphasis on sports? Should teachers be required to take com- petency tests? Will merit pay for teachers lead to better educa- tion? Could the school year be lengthened? Is there enough attention being given to social activities? Adding to the confusion of the education dilemma is a cry for more computer literacy, while others clamour for a back to basics move. Even President Reagan came out with a plea for better discipline in the nation's schools. Look for education to be a major issue in the Presidential Campaign of l984. Pennsyl- vania as well as other states are mandating massive doses of curriculum change by the l985-86 school year. There undoubtedly is and will continue to be a lot of opinions and criticisms formulated regarding education. Hopefully high schools across the country will pull together and discuss the serious educational problems which are facing them. The Nor- win School District's current contemplation of a curriculum change is setting an example from which all of these school districts could benefit. Is Norwin getting the job done? Perhaps PENNON '84 will shed some light on the subject. I984 As Education ls A Target Of Criticism, Norwin Continues To Excell As It Keeps The Door Oper For Positive Change. - 1' Plasmas Norwin faculty members take a course in computers in order to keep up with computer revolution . Next year every graduating senior will have a course in basic computer understanding . Top ranking seniors in the Class of '84 are Claudia Ruzina and Wendy Weyant. Both girls are cheerleaders and plan a future in medical related fields. Keeping up with what is good for Norwin are the student representatives to the School Board, Nancy Collie and Laurie Klanchar. 5: 'Q 5 Q s l This year's National Merit Scholars Auron. Mak WUBUTU and soul grew up today An Apple for the teacherlMr. Bluhm keeping up with the new technology. Other computer students include Mr. Mayhugh, Mr. Rizzardi. Mr. Cornali, and Mr. Petrucci. Claudia Ruzina: I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to attend such an excellent school. Norwin is, by far, the tops in academics. I know my feelings are shared by every student, for their pride is evident in every action. Laurie Klanchar. Education at Norwin . . . can easily help make every student the best person he or she could possibly be if they take advantage of the many oppor- tunities offered. With public education under fire this year, PENNON '84 decided to ask the seniors pictured on this page just what they thought of Education, Nor- win Style. Wendy Weyant: There is probably room for improvement in any school district. However, I feel that Norwin has an excellent education system . . Jeffrey Page: I feel that I have re- ceived the best possible high school education anyone could ask for. The excellent faculty really seems to care about the students' learning while be- ing more than just teachers. Norwin is truly 'first class - - - all the way. ' Nancy Collie: The education re- ceived at Norwin is the cornerstone to further learning . sarrr li include Larry Matta and Barbara Condie. Senior Jeff Page was the elated recipient of the coveted Rodgers Scholarship this year. After graduation from high school, Mr. Markosky attended California College for undergraduate study, moved on to the as We University of Pittsburgh, and later returned to California to 'W ' A Q F if finish his college education. He then joined the Air Force for rs 1, s 32 months. S t - we Mr. Markosky began his career teaching in the Pittsburgh I schools then transferred to Export High School and later Mr. Markosky, now living a life of leisure. When not hunting. he will be golfin taught for a year at the Braddock Vocational School. After that year, he began teaching at Irwin High School, where he met Mr. Stough, his closest and dearest friend. Finally and most importantly, Mr. Markosky began his ca- reer at Norwin. He was an industrial arts instructor for nearly 30 years as well as the head of the Industrial Arts Department. After holding these distinguished positions for many years, he then moved to the Career Office which was just beginning operation in I974. He served as assistant basketball coach for 20 years and later became head coach for five more years. Today, Mr. Markosky holds the position as being a very proud and loving father of three children. The first, Frank Jr., who works for the government, Douglas, who is a captain for the United States Marines, and daughter Leigh Ann, a senior at Cornell University. Mr. Markosky and his wife Doris plan to visit their three children, take a trip to Maine, and possibly tour Europe. Mr. Markosky also plans to spend more time golfing, fishing, and hunting. When asked how he felt about Norwin, he replied, Norwin is in a class all by itself, the teachers are great and so are the kids. From the entire Norwin High School and Pennon '84 we give thanks and wish good luck to a devoted teacher and friend. Mr. Bruce Lawson Ami in French means friend , and that is what Mr. Lawson named his dog - - - a gift presented to him by his colleagues. Mr. Peduzzi helps steady the frightened puppy. Mr. Bruce Lawson, a great friend of the Norwin communi- ty, went into partial retirement beginning September I, I983. Mr. Lawson started college at California State and later went to Stanford. From l942 to I946 he served in the South Pacific. ln i949 he attended graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Lawson began his stay at North Huntingdon High School where he was hired in I947 to set up a guidance office. ln addition to teaching social studies, he was the Attendance Officer and was involved with student govern- ment. While living in Madison with his wife, Marie, Mr. Lawson enjoys working in his garden, hunting, reading, doing church work, and taking long walks. He places great importance on his family life, which includes his wife, his three children, five grandchildren, and his dog, Ami Norwin, a retirement gift from Norwin High School. Mr. Lawson greatly misses the personal contact of working in the guidance office. He liked doing his job and feels that if one enjoys what he's doing it's not work but experience. Proof of his philosophy is evident in the fact that Mr. Lawson retired and immediately assumed a part time position as a curriculum consultant to the Norwin School District. After this year the former guidance director will probably retire permanently. He hopes that people have grown as much as he has through sharing and working with them. Yes, Mr. Lawson, thank you for all your invaluable help and friendship through the past 36 years. S e e c r e t a r i e S ' -- sw.. PEDUZZI Throughout this yearbook, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the students, faculty, past events, activities, etc. However, the prime mover behind all the successes at Norwin should not be forgotten, and that person is, of course, Mr. Peduzzi. Undoubtedly, Mr. Peduzzi has played an important part in our high school lives. Every morning we were greeted by his familiar voice requesting us to bow our heads for a moment of silent meditation and, of course, stand and join him in patriotically reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. After starting off each school day, Mr. Peduzzi could often be seen scouting the halls, eager to advise, help, or converse with any student. lf not in the halls, he could be found in his office preparing for the anticipated problems of a typical day. Mr. Peduzzi has, indeed, done a lot for us these past three years and we should be thankful that we were fortunate to have a caring principal. From all of us, Mr. Peduzzi-THANK YOU!! On the first day of school, Mr. Yates meets with his attendance team, Mrs. McCorkle Cseatedj, Mr. Matko, Mr. Cencia, Mr. Bateman. and Mr. Martin FRANCIS J. LANN Assistant Principal Cbelowj 3 Q One usually ends up in Mr. Lann's office after cutting a class, From the look on Steve Prengaman's face, that is not the problem this time. Mr. Peduzzi's difficult job was made a little easier by the aid of his two assistant principals-Mr. Lann and Mr. Yates. Like Mr. Peduzzi, each of these men contributed a great deal of their time and energy to make the years spent at Norwin Senior High School enjoyable for every- , one. Mr. Lann will undoubtedly be remembered for the countless pep assemblies he conducted. Aside from activi- ties, Mr. Lann's duties consisted of calling endless names g of individuals over the announcements, disciplining those who deserved it, and generally just keeping the whole school in order. ff, ' s If it weren't for Mr. Yates, the numerous excuses, tar- dies, and early dismissals that we needed from time to time wouldn't have been possible. ln addition to the fine job he did in the attendance department, he, like Mr. Lann, supplied a lot of assistance to Mr. Peduzzi. Some teachers are known for their mastery of subject matter, some are recognized for their wit, and yet others are remembered for their warm and cordial personality. George Stoll, who retired at the close of the i982-83 school year is known for all of these characteristics and more. A verteran of 23 years in the teaching profession-I6 of them at Norwin-the colorful social studies teacher taught here before mov- ing to Chicago this past summer. Although his career started as a sixth grade teacher at Walnut Street School in McKeesport, the past IO senior classes remember Mr. Stoll as their psychology teacher. Proof of how effective and motivating he was in the classroom can be seen in the high number of graduates who went on to major in psychology in college. ln addition to his classroom duties, Mr. Stoll directed the ADAPT program throughout most of the l97O's. Mr. Stoll graduated from Lock Haven State College where he earned his teaching degree. Later he did graduate work at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Still more study was done at Westmin- ster College due to a fellowship provided by the American Bar Association. ln the community affairs, Mr. Stoll sat on the North Huntingdon Township Recreation Board as well as the Westmore- land County Drug and Alcohol Commission. Now that teaching does not occupy the bulk of his time, Mr. Stoll can give more of his attention to leisure time activities, especially reading and collecting jazz albums. Always a friend of the arts, Mr. Stoll attends museums, the ballet, and concerts. Of Chicago, he says, It's dynamite here culturally-this city is fantastic and beau- tifuIl Mr. Stoll enjoys the city with his wife Delores and son, Dave CNorwin High, Class of l98OJ. g Because his retirement came sooner than it does for most teach- ers, Mr. Stoll plans to discover a new career-and most likely, he says,.not in teaching this time. That would be bad news for some young people somewhere. My other associate editor and best friend, Jeff Page, also deserves a lot of credit. Thanks also to John Ward for his excellent job on the layout sheets. Mrs. Gillis and Mr. Bluhm also should be thanked for excusing me from class so many times. Jim Kowalski is responsible for helping to identify muItitudinous pictures. Finally, I would like to thank my father, Dan, and my sister, Dena, for their support, and I would especially like to thank my mom, Elena. Without your help and advice, Mom, the Yough-a-Mon-I mean the Pennon-wouldn't have turned outsas well as it did! I started this column the same way I am going to finish it. To all my friends, my staff, and everyone else who contributed to this yearbook--THANK-YOUIII Nancy Marie Yencho Editor-in-Chief 240 Wofw XP .f A final memory: of when the Class of l984 was the Class of l972.
