Wllke vgivxs 4 CAROL GONGA WARE NOR WINTS FIRST STUDENT ABROAD Y It was a wonderful and exciting oppor- tunity for me to spend my three month summer vacation in Greece as an Ameri- cans Abroad Student. I learned much about myself and also developed an appre- ciation for an entirely different culture. My first four days in Greece were spent at a language and orientation camp at Voula with all the other American stu- dents going to Greece. Then l went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Constantine Karalario- tou in the little farm village of Nikea. l had a twenty year old brother named Antoni, and my sister Roula was sixteen. My grandmother also lived with us. They were wonderful people and really accepted me as a member of their family. My father was a farmer. One of his main crops was cotton and l was often able to help in the fields. The highlight of each day was the volt- an or walk. Every village has a town square and it is the custom to walk back and forth each evening. lt was here that I met many Greek people. They were all interested in learning about America and our customs. The Greeks are very warm and hospitable people. Carol Gongaware with her Greek family , top, and amid the historic remains of the ancient civilization that gave democracy, above. Left, an olympic runner on his way to Munich for the 1972 Olympics passed through the village where Carol stayed. l was very sad when the time came to leave my wonderful family. The AFS students accompanied by some Greek students went on a bus tour of the southern part of the country. We visited Delphi, ancient Olympia, Corinth, and Athens. lt was an overwhelming experience to see such ancient and historic places. After leaving Greece, we spent four days in Turkey where we visited a Sultan's palace, a harem, and the largest open bazaar in the world. My experiences convinced me that the best way to learn and appreciate a different culture is to actually live 'in it. My ambition is to someday return to Greece. .,.....-vw 'mn-wa,,r.L fa... ,fr Q-NN- Sara found a few differences in school systems and she seems to have provided some hilarious moments explain- ing those differences with her classmates, above. Pictured together, top, are Sara Wormald and her American sister Coleen Curley. Sara resided with the Curley's during her stay in America. SARA WORMALD, OR W I THIRD VISITOR FROM ABR OAD Since there may well be some of you who donlt know who I am, I'll introduce myself as the AFS student 1972f3 from England, or to be more precise from a tiny village called Blakedown in the county of Worcestershire, yes it is where the sauce comes from and I have yet to find an American who can pronounce it the correct English way. Even though live only been here for three months I am slowly realizing that although people say America and England are very alike, on close inspection they are widely different. Food here seems to be more snacky, hamburgers and ice cream seem to exist in never ending quantities! Not only do Americans seem to eat on the road but they seem to live on the road: there are far more cars here, in England people still travel quite frequently by train, especially those who commute to work. Our trans- port to school is different also, we ride public transportation, either trains or buses, and if you live more than three miles from school you get reimbursed. This brings me to the major difference, that of schools. In England education is divided into two sections, 5-11 years, and 11-18 years, although a new system is being introduced whereby you change schools at 9, 13 and sometimes 16. Most students remain at school till 18 although school is only compulsory until 16. As a result of this I have been at a school of six hundred girls comprising seven grades, so that when I was thrust into a two thou- sand strong mixed school it was quite a shock. As I said at the start, while I write this I have only been here three months but I have noticed that whatever anybody may say there is a language difference. If I look blank when you say jumpers, snaps or french-fries it is only because I know them as pinafore dresses, press-studs or chips! It is not only vocabulary, fre- quently I have to repeat myself before I am understood due to my accent so the next person who says that there is no Anglo-American communication barriers is likely to get hit hard! Three months is not long, by the end of the year I shall no doubt have discovered many more differences even if I've accus- tomed myself to the ones I've mentioned - it's an experience, come over to Eng- land and try it - words could never explain it and I'm speaking from experi- ence! .lust one more thing - it's been fun so far and I'm sure it's going to continue just as good and Norwin will always be a part of it - an experience I shall never forget! FACULTY Teachers do much more than just stand in front of the classroom and disperse information. Most students fail to realize the other side of the faculty -A especially the home life. Mr. Testa offers a reminder of family responsibility as he appears above with his wife Judy and their son, Michael. Teachers also spend much time at home preparing lessons so that they might present their material the next day in a logical and natural manner as does Mr. Surmacz, above, right. Mr. Gardner, right, often leaves the confines of his classroom to escort his biology students on a trip to see the members of the plant kingdom in their natural habitat. On the opposite page, bottom, is another scene involving teachers that students sel- dom see 4 those after school faculty meetings in the library. Preparing for the meeting are Miss Leggieri, Mr. Sipe and Miss Pescuric. And of course, the most familiar scene, opposite page, the teacher in front of the class as anyone can see when passing Miss Gray7s classroom door. T .hK. 2515 Q. In the first presidential election in which eighteen year olds had the right to vote, the nation chose Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew. Campaigning took on many forms as candidates for student council office presented their views, above left, at a special pre-election assembly. A special assembly was held for members of the Contemporary Affairs class, center left, wherein young people from the commu- nity such as John Kulik, Norwin alumnus, debated on the views of Nixon and McGovern. THE NOR WIN HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND GOES TO CANADA' '1 'f After the enjoyable chaos of packing and unpacking, two silhouetted hand members find time for thoughtful serenity on a rocky jetty along the shore of Lake Ontario, left. Lengthy hours of preparation, discipline, and unquestioning obedience, these and many other elements have created one of the finest bands ever, the Norwin Senior High School Marching Band. The dedication of the band members and their hours of sacrifice, however, have not passed unnoticed. Exhibition performances not only reward the students but also honor the entire school. The bandfs trip to Toronto this past September exemplifies such a performance. For several years the band has been invited to participate in the halftime entertainment at one of the Argonaut's football games. Departing at pre-dawn hours, traveling for miles on a rowdy bus, practicing long sessions in an unfamiliar stadium, the band still delivered the same exceptional performance which marked its first exhib- ition. Part of this trip's significance was the opportunities it opened to the band students. For those newer members, it provided their first view of Canada. ln addition, after the performance, the entire band was able to tour the Ontario Science Center. Of course it offered the extra advantage of missing two days of school. Indeed, the Toronto expedition further represents the growing fame of the Norwin band and proved a valuable and memorable experience for all involved. Q, -it - V A ---.:f - ' Ai 3 ,. Homecoming '72 took on a big top atmosphere under the leadership of Student Council president, Jim Minnich and its advisor, Mrs. Garritano. The local business community provided financial help to school organizations for the construction of the floats and the rest was history as the students went to work preparing the colorful entries seen here and on the previous two pages. The festivities began with a pep rally on Homecoming eve - due to a ruling of the local fire department, the traditional bonfire had to be exchanged for the individual flames of student held candles. On homecoming day itself, the students paraded their floats through Irwin, the Norwin Shopping Center, and the football stadium. The event climaxed with the crowning of Terri Rehich as queen. Normally, that would have been enough for one homecoming, but the Norwin football Knights put some icing on the cake with a 13-0 victory over Wilkinsburg - Norwin's first homecoming victory! The student body celebrated their victory at a dance in the school cafeteria. Homecoming '72 - a successful day in every way. THE .IU IOR-SENIOR PROM AN AFTERNOON OF FRANTIG DECORATING LEADS TO AN EVENING OF FINE FOOD, DANCING, AND LASTING MEMORIES. The idea of using the school gymnasium to hold the 1972 Prom met with much resistance among the upperclassmen who were planning to attend the annual affair. The lucky couples who did attend were pleasantly surprised to find the gym trans- formed from its everyday role into a gar- den of ancient Greece. The walls became a series of graceful columns and lush shrubbery interspersed with statuary. While dining by romantic candlelight, the couples were served a delightful meal by their classmates who performed the func- tions of waiters and waitresses. After the lovely meal, music was provided and the floor filled with dancers. The scene looked like one from an eighteenth-cen- tury novel as the boys in their tuxedos and the girls in the floor-length gowns moved around the floor. Soon the magic Grecian garden was deserted though, as the people left it for a far different set- ting, the post-prom party at Harty's Pub. More dancing was provided for at the party and to a much faster pace. Two rock groups played current music in sepa- rate rooms. The festivities lasted through the night until early Sunday morning. By then, everyone was ready to go home, catch a couple hours of sleep and prepare for a picnic on Sunday afternoon. l i t Nw Enjoying the prom ,l. Rutlxowski. J. Sasena. T. and C. Cervi. S. Pure innocence is put to the test, but forthright goodness finally triumphs. ls this another moral lesson of the day? Love Rides the Rails, otherwise known as Will the Mail-Train Run Tonight?, was an adventure into Saturday's silent film flicks that proved a cultural and commercial success for the Class of '73. Human fortitude faced its greatest trial as Simon Darkway, a foul menace to society, endeavored to force the pious Mrs. Hopewell to relinquish her railway claim. Naturally his des- picable schemes resulted in failure. Even his faithful side-kick, Dirk Sneath, could not escape the well deserved consequences. No melodrama would be complete without a test of true love. Despite the wiles of the alluring Carlotta Cortez, however, Truman Pendennis remained loyal to his dear Pru- dence. The additional escapades of such colorful characters as Fifi and Harold Stanfast thrilled the audi- ence while the comic relief of the numerous olios provided unexpected delight. IF THE NOR WIN CHORAL DEPARTMENT PRESENTS ITS SPRING EXTRA VAGANZA, CAN SUMMER BE EAR BEHIND. When does Spring officially arrive in the Norwin area? Perhaps with the melting of the last snow? Maybe when the bright yellow blossoms appear on the forsythia bushes? lt could be on that balmy morning when our grassy hillsidew undergoes the transformation from winter's dull brown to the coolness of Aprilis green. The answer, of course, is all of theseg but to the district's lovers of good music, Spring officially makes its debut with the annual Spring Concert. The enthusiastic blend of voices provides the same euphoria as that first balmy day of April. The vocal magic of Mrs. Close's choraliers entwined with the sparkling color of the stage setting is enough to set toes tapping in harmony to chirping crickets and the staccato blinking of fireflies in the night. The 1972 show, entitled Over the Rainboww was another of the many hits that Mrs. Close and hundreds of energetic students have put together. Was it worth all of the time and trouble? Ask any participant, for as they gazed from the stage they saw the traditional packed house that has become synonymous with Mrs. Close's productions. Inspired by this support, the Norwin five rebounded from a previous league defeat at the hands of Latrobe to down the Hempfield Spartans, 49-35. The contest was marred by numerous turnovers which had Coach Hursh in a fit of frustration throughout most of the evening. ln an attempt to maintain control, the Knights slowed down the action in the final quarter to take only two shots from the field. By this time the crowd had settled down to accept a victory by a most comfortable margin. Big Mike Barberich and Senior Randy Smith led the scoring honors with 15 and 10 points respectively. After successfully defeating Derry Area in the first round of Scholastic Quiz com- petition to win a 150 dollar scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, the first Norwin team was out answered by Ridgway Area in the second round. The team, consisting of captain Mike Prengaman, Debbie Dakin, Russell Droz- diak, Jill Leukhardt, and alternates Cathy Medich and Scott Strait, matched wits with other scholars at the Johnstown tele- vision studio in WJAC-TV's high school quiz program. It symbolizes the enthusiasm, dedication, and aspirations of the entire school body. ln effect the Pennon is Norwin Senior High School. We of the staff have strived to create a yearbook, of unequalled precedence, a yearbook of which the entire school body can be proud. The efforts have not been ours alone, however, and now we feel the need to express our deepest gratitude to those who have so greatly aided us in our endeavors. The entire staff has earned recognition for the effort they have put forth. In particular Bob Weaver, our school photographer, deserves special notice for his tireless and ceaseless energy, in addition to his ability to provide pictures of the highest caliber. Mr. Buchman and his assistant Mr. Kianese have also contributed outstanding photographs enhancing the quality of our book. To the Taylor Publishing Company of Dallas, Texas, and their representative Mr. ,lack Wiley we extend our deepest gratitude for the instruction, aid, and support which they have provided. Our distinguished covers are due to the artistic designs of the S. K. Smith Cover Company. Without these people, the Penrwn would not be the outstanding publication we believe it to be. Too numerous to be named are the others deserving of our respect. Thanks are gratefully extended to the Student Council for their aid in our candy drive, to the Burger Chef for providing the winning homeroom prizes, to Niel Wolk and the enthusiastic homeroom 411. ln addition, we thank the principals for their patience and understand- ing, the teachers who allowed us to disrupt their classes, and the students who have contributed their dramatic skills throughout the book. We thank the Maintenance staff for putting.up with our excessive demands, We thank Miss Richards for all her aid in the Permon office. We thank Mrs. O'Bruba and Miss Weaver for their extensive coopera- tion, and we thank all of those others whom we have neglected to mention here. Needless to say, we also extend apologies for our short-sightedness. - Words cannot express the deep gratitude which We, the entire staff, owe to our advisor Mr. John B. Polivka. Our accomplishments reflect his skill, dedication, and loyalty. Thank you! The Editors of the Pennon, 1973 Now Is the Tirne To Look Ahead face lQ'e with knowledge gained from yesterday and hopes and dreams r for tornorrow. 0 revelations
