The importance of this year, then, will he inestimable to those seniors who must leave these Hsheltering portals fair to take their places in a world which America is striving to make free for everyone. So, to the grand American Way, loved hy us all, we ldedirate this annual as a record of four years happily spent at Norwin. fx THE KDMINISTBATIIIN The administration of Norwin High School has established a policy of democracy in the school which has become one of its chief assets. The administrative leaders have also placed Norwin wholeheartedly behind the national defense program, pledging the full co- operation of both students and faculty. Superintendent of Schools, Carl C. Pearsall, has contributed much toward progressiveness at Norwin. He has introduced ideas typifying the modern trend in education and has guided the patriotic endeavors of the student body in the nation's best interests. Principal John W. Clawson has always enthusiasti- cally promoted democracy at Norwin. He referred many problems in school government directly to the pupils, permitting them to voice their own opinions. In this way, students had a part in charting their own courses at Norwin. l l C, C P1aARsAi.i, J, W, CLAWSQN Superifztenclenf of Svfzoolf Pringipgl Nlr. l'm-:ir lln- Norwm lioziril ol lzmliiczitioii, rv- Hcctingg rho intcrcsr ol thi' purcnts in tha' cclnczition ol , Xincric:1n youth, has nizuln' mzmy iniprovvnicnts in thi- school pro- grznn zinil, clcspitc lizlmlivzips, has SIICCCSS- fully cope-cl with prolxlcms arising lroln thc nzltionznl criicmc-livy. This interest is evinced in classes, at social events, and in informal gatherings. Better un- derstanding and a closer relation- ship between teacher and student results from these contacts. In a year that has seen new instructors replace long familiar teachers, we students have made many lasting friendships among the newcomers. However, we have not forgotten those who guided us through the past four years at Norwin. 'lihey were not merely our teachers, hut were also our good friends and coun- selors. The clubs, musical organiza- tions, and publications staffs claim many members who are becoming versatile and well-informed Amereians. These activities, we feel, help promote the democratic spirit in the school by enabling the students to do many things well, thus giving them a feeling of well-being and poise, neces- sary to future citizens who will be expected to contribute lo their nation's welfare. Under the supervision of Miss Painter, the Year- book had lfleanor Clawson as editor-in- chief assisted by the literary editor, Louis Kober and the mechanical editor, Jeanne lVlcl-lugh. Wayne Cashdollar was the business manager. Once every two weeks at dismissal, an observer might have noticed students ambling through the halls engrossed in their copies of the Norwin Bi-Weekly. The very efficient staff of this newspaper, under the supervision of lVlr. Paul Brown, spent hours writing, proof reading, and setting the type for this four-page publi- cation. The Bi-Weekly was edited by Howard .Bullock assisted by Jennie Mae Mistero as news editor. Lorraine Peters held the position of feature editor. The business staff was captained by Ruth Frisk with Robert Dunn aiding as adver- tising manager. Calvin Millen served as circulation manager. .57 . S f ,l i N . .7 i Rhythm, mixed voices, and harmoni- - i ous chords testify to the talents of the I M A E lads and lassies of Norwin. Our finest A musicians are found in the various musical organizations. The boys who are talented in singing have been organized into a group known as the Boys' Glee Club. These boys, consisting of members from the four classes, furnished excellent music for assemblies, the operetta H. M. S. Pinafore, and commencement. The well blended voices of a mixed chorus formed another group, the A Cappella. This formal music group, under the direction of Mr. Hetrick, participated in chapel programs and sang for clubs and activities of various kinds. The Norwin band met the demand for music of a stirring nature and was popu- lar at school festivities. It efficiently carried out its foremost duty of playing at football -games, where its appearance added color and zest to the occasion. After the football season rolled away, the band yielded the musical stage to the orchestra. In the operetta H. M. S. Pinafore, the orchestra gave a note- worthy performance and closed the sea- son by playing at Commencement exer- cises. Since the orchestra favored classics, it helped to make Norwin students familiar with the finest type of music. Painting scenery for H.M.S. Pinafore. Albert and Georgetta practice the 3rd act. Since such a large number of girls were interested in group singing during the past year, Mr. Hetrick decided to divide them, calling the older group the A chorus and the younger the B chorus. The main function of the former was to help provide music for the annual Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. They also sang at the Thanksgiving and Christmas Assem- blies and ended the season by performing at the baccalaureate and commencement services. The girls in the B chorus met once a week in the music room. They did not appear publicly in a group but aided in the presentation of the operetta as ushers. The Norwin Debating Club, discon- tinued ten years ago, was reorganized by Miss Olga Kobasa. During the hrst semester the members learned the funda- mentals of debating. Later Norwin's entrance into the Pennsylvania Forensic League entitled our debaters to partici- pate in county, district, and state con- tests. The question of peacetime com- pulsory military training was debated with a number of other district schools. Acting as president of the club was James Helman, with Carl Zona as vice-presi- dent, and Betty Flanigan as secretary. Outstanding typists from the junior class were organized into the Junior Typing Club by Miss Santner. This club consisted of a large group of skilled typists whose aim was greater typing skill. Awards were given to those excelling in speed tests. The typists elected Ross Waltoii as their prcsidentg Betty Setfy vice presidentg jane Lunn, secretaryg and Martha Brown, treasurer. U Because student energies must be directed into many varied channels, Nor- win included in its list of activities the rifle club which provides skilled outdoor and indoor competition, and the radio club which delves into a fascinating and absorbing hobby. Then, too, student leaders were organized and developed into responsible cheerleaders who direct- ed cheering at major athletic contests while drum majorettes injected color and life into our marching band. From a modest beginning, Norwin's rifle club became an organization of a hundred boys and girls. After the mem- bers had learned proper care and use of firearms, they traveled to the Hahntown rifle range several nights weekly and concentrated on target shooting. A fea- ture of target practice was an elimination tournament with boy and girl divisions. The best shots comprised Norwin's rifle team. The team and club were directed by Mr. Shirley. War restrictions upon the use of pri- vate sets prevented the radio club from operating its station at Norwin as it had done in the past. However, aided by the addition of new equipment, including a transmitter, the radio uhamsl' were able to carry out an otherwise normal pro- gram. Adviser Hermann Muellerschoen concentrated upon a study of radio fun- damentals and the Morse code. Cheerleaders, who organize and de- velop school spirit at athletic contests, must be of exceptional ability and train- ing. So this year a group of upperclass- men were chosen to lead our teams down that field with Norwin yells and songs. High stepping drum majorettes were an important part of our band. Leading the march in parades or at half-time maneuvers, Norwin majorettes gave im- pressive performances. The girls were instructed in their drills and formations by jimmy Weaver, the band leader. 1 . L'liu'ziro PRESE Tl ' THE 'llhe 1941-42 varsity haslcethall season closed on lfehruary 28 after an up-and-down series of games hy the Norwin five. 'lihe Blue Devil quintet wound up its second consecutive year in the cellar of Section IX. lhough the squad was a veteran outfit, the hoys failed to come up to local expectations. Clark lVlcClelland piloted the cagers for his lifth and Hnal year. Due to hlcClelland's acceptance of a civil service joh with the army late in the season, ,lim XYolfe, who has had a wealth of experience in local court circles, took over the controls until the finale. Regardless of the record of two games won and ten Com-n MeC1,iai.i,ANn lost in section competition, the Norwin live played several never-to-he-forgotten tilts. Une non-section game which kept the fans on their feet was the 3-f-32 overtime defeat of the Blue Devils on their home floor at the hands of North Belle Vernon. Norwin was eliminated from the county tourna- ment in the first play off, losing to Greensburg 36-31. ln spite of this season's losses, the filt- look for next year is optimistic. Several valuable seniors will be lost through graduation. High-scoring Ray Siegel, who finished the season with 103 points, as well as Vlfalter Plank, defen- sive ace, will be hard to replace. Uhlig, Taylor, and lfiltz, all of whom showed streaks of basketball ability, will also be graduated. 1llN1'l'lltfl0l1N on f.,lllI'i1ll1j., rrison, Millen, Kerr, Payne, VY. l.ee, George, Fulton, How In mike fhgt Hk11l1lqllL Xlr Nlacftndarfer winning basktt kb: I Stlnader, Kim es. Two badminton fiends, If t 1 la,L ll .fl r f I TBA UR C ETITI i Norwin's gym and health classes for boys assumed an air of seriousness this year in view of our country's war crisis. Both classes were revised in an attempt to train students to meet emergencies. The gym classes themselves were not so different from those of other years- fundamentally, at least. There was one noticeable change, however. Calisthenics became more prominent as a measure for keeping the boys in excellent physical condition. A program was set up in order to supply exercise for all the muscles of the body. 'llhere were push-ups, bending exercises, running in place, and a variety of others. As the year progressed, the calisthenics became more exhaustive and difhcult but the students were more able to stand them. Basketball held its place at the top of the games list. Although the game was not played in a strictly orthodox manner, it remained the favorite of the classes. Badminton, volleyball, and fencing played minor roles in the gym curricula. During the warmer days of spring, soft ball was played outdoors. 'lihere were few classes in the open, however. ln health class, a decided change was noticeable. First aid, based upon informa- tion supplied by the American Red Cross, was taught almost exclusively. 'llo teach boys to remain calm in an emergency and to render first aid when necessary became the foremost aim of the health program. 'llhis year instead of merely learning the integral parts of the body, students placed emphasis upon their functions and how to care for them. Such things as bleeding, shock, broken bones and poison- ing were discussed in' detail during recitations. If every high school has done as much for its boys as has ours in the past year, we may rest assured that America's men of the future will be strong in mind and body, able to take care of themselves, and to face a crisis calmly. l 1 r i r i 1 l l 1 Friskien Hockey experts try for zu gunl. rlemonstrzntes hmv ping-pong slmulml Ive The b:1ll's over here! The seniors won the championship by a very close margin, the other three classes showing stiff compe- tition. The Girls' Leaders Club, supervised by Miss Allshouse, began to get actively under way in january. Bernadine Hig- gins was elected president, Mary Smith vice-president: and Pat Siebert,secretary- treasurer. 'l'he membership of the club numbered fourteen, consisting of eight seniors, four juniors and two sophomores. These girls olhciated at games and worked in the shower-room and gym. . !., if I I N ii'ri ii f lx l u I Basketball was the next sport intro- duced with the seniors again winning the championship. Volleyball and mushball were close followers of basketball in the interclass line. Ping-pong, badminton, tennis, and archery were offered as individual sports. 'l'ournaments, in which many girls par- ticipated, were held to determine the title holder for each sport. With the completion of these sports, a full program of much enjoyment and enthusiasm ended until next year's fans light the torch and keep it burning for another year.
