THIRTY'SEVEN YEARS DE LEADERSHIP 1903 - Ma. 71?nelZ p 1 . ! For thirtyfseven years Mr. Henry A. Tirrell has been principal of the Norwich Free Acad' emy and has seen the school grow from an ex' ceptionally fine high school to an institution whose influence is felt all over the country. During his period of leadership, the Main Building has been erected to replace the origf inal Academy building. The Manual Training Building has been enlarged and equipped with modern machinery. The Printing Department has presses which make it possible to print the Mirror and the RED AND WHITE on campus. The Art School has added evening classes for adults, who do ine work in painting, pottery and jewelry. Slater Museum has been modern' ized through the efforts of Mrs. Ozias Dodge, who has arranged the many collections which llfaokdfq ,Jack 38 ,qealu- have made the Museum famous. The Vander' poel collection of Oriental treasures is one of the finest in America. Mr. Raymond Case has recently furnished an Early American room for the Museum. The Commercial Building has been built to give expert commercial training to students who are entering business. The Norton Memorial Health Center gives space for the required physical training, is the scene of basketball games and the increasingly popular Dime Hops. Over on Broadway is our beau- tiful Home Economics Building, where girls are taught cooking, sewing, household management, and the gracious art of creating happy homes. A nursery school gives practice in child care. The clubhouse replaces the little white house with a few cold water showers where athletes shivered not so long ago. These are tangible evidences of Mr. Tirrell's leadership, but there is a farther reaching achievement in the hearts of Academy alumni. To them he is the wise, kindly, witty principal who always understood their problems, rejoiced with them in their triumphs, athletic and schof lastic, and given them the encouragement to start all over when things went wrong. It is fitting that Mr. Tirrell should retire while he is active, alert, eager to be a vital part of the community, and happy in the realization that he is still needed. While he will not sit behind the office desk, the Academy is fortunate to have him in an advisory capacity to guide the policies of the school by his wisdom, by his faith in youth, by his broad understanding of the problems which face presentfday high school students. anode!! 7eam of 190.2 Lower Row: Mullen, Barber, Vars Avery Gleason Row Above: Frisbie, Gibbs, Bent, Richards McNamara Keane.
