BURNING THAT MIDNIGHT OIL . . . Studying late into the night helped Shahram prepare for his calculus test, but despite his hard work and lack of sleep he still had more to complete the next day in school. Blood shot eyes close as a teacher's voice drones on. A nodding head jerks awake just as much-needed slumber begins to take hold. lt's a common sight to see students in a zombie-like state due to lack of sleep, especially on test days. Students employ various methods of fight- ing drowsiness while studying. Some stu- dents crank the tunes: others drink anything with caffeine. ln many cases, the problem begins with ex- tra-curricular activities. For people who have after-school jobs, homework has to wait. Mark Harrington admits, When I get home from school, l like to watch Porky Pig. After a whole day in shool, the last thing I feel like doing is working. As long as students can find something to do besides homework, desk lamps will con- tinue to glow long past midnight.
