OUR PRINCIPAL re mm MR. FREDERICK A. SMALL To the Class of 1960: We live in an era that is fretted by many an irritant --both internal and external to our social being. The troubles and turmoils of our generation are such, indeed, as to try men ' s souls. But, as the strength of steel results from fire and forge, so is the durability of character made manifest by the fears and frustrations through which the strong personality emerges victorious in its contention with the problems of life. With every new challenge are equally new and fascinating opportunities. Author Edgar Ansel Mower in his recent book, A GOOD TIME TO BE ALIVE, says: No personal experience can be more thrilling than a supreme adventure of the human race. Our western civilization is undergoing a decisive test ... Its leadership is challenged. In being called upon to face that challenge, Americans are confronted with unequaled opportunity. Ahead of them lies the great assignment of preserving the best part and shaping a richer future. If man ' s deepest greatness is his capacity to choose, to suffer and to enjoy, then happy is the generation born, like ours, to take part in earth-shaking events. Class of 1960, consider well your opportunities. May your personal efforts be the stuff from which is shaped the glory and the honor of a bright tomorrow. Frederick A. Small
