To the Class of 1959: A popular and prevalent concept is one of Togetherness. The implication in this is that GROUP thinking and GROUP activity constitute the proper procedure in problem solving. There is much in a democratic society that requires consideration by groups. The verdict of a majority group determines the law of our land and decides upon the ones in political office who lead in the functions of government. The will and the way of the American pioneer, however, are still essential to progress in the affairs of our nation. We still need lonely and lonesome men and women who will think and work as individuals, apart from the crowd, The great accomplishments in any era have been rooted in ideas. Ideas are the products of people, in the singular sense, and not of groups or committees. May I challenge you at this time to dare to be yourselves. Work for the common good and in the interest of mankind, of course, but maintain your own identity. The herd instinct can reduce American culture to a common denominator. Don't get lost in the crowd. Make the world aware of your thoughts and your actions in a direct manifestation of YOUR OWN personality. Frederick A, Small, Principal Norwell High School 5 X
