Norwayne School Fremont North Carolina Published by: Senior Class Third Edition Foreword We have attempted in these pages not only to present a record of the 1960- 61 school year, but also to capture the spirit of Norwayne School for the years to come. May the democratic ideals of our school live long in our hearts and guide us toward a better world. The Staff Contents DEDICATION STAFF ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS CLASSES ELEMENTARY CLASSES ADVERTISERS Yearbook Staff ADMINISTRATION Supervisors To The Principal, Faculty and Students: I wish to take this opportunity to commend you on the publication of your third annual. Samuel Johnson has said, Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is danger¬ ous and dreadful. Another writer has said, Two qualities make the differ¬ ence between leaders and men of average performance. They are curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstand¬ ing man who lacked either. And I have never known a man of small achievement who had both. Combining the thoughts as expressed by both writers each of us will find the formula for success. Now as never before the world needs leaders with integrity, curiosity, and discon¬ tent. May Norwayne School produce many leaders now and in the future and may our present leaders exemplify this type of leadership. Sincerely yours (Mrs.) Virginia H. Green Supervisor of Instruction To the Members of the Class of 1961; It is with much pleasure that I take time out to offer congratulations to you upon the completion of twelve years of work as prescribed by the Board of Education and Norwayne School. I am sure the training and enlightenment you have received will ena¬ ble you to go forth and take your place in society, remembering that an education is never completed without the acknow ledgement of the power and guiding spirit of Jesus Christ. Supervisor of Music Education To the Principal, Faculty and Students; Accept my sincere congratulations on your won¬ derful success in publishing the third edition of your annual. To reach a height, we must climb, not soar; and in climbing to any successful height in any endeavor, let us use for our rungs these attributes - determination, organization, cooperation and excel¬ lence. Let us use for our motto what one great writer said in his STEP BY STEP; Heaven is not reached by a single bound But we build the ladder by which we rise From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies. And we mount to its summit round by round. C. Supervisor of Guidance The Principal Speaks To the Members of the Senior Class and Advisors; It is a pleasure to congratulate you on your third edition of the NORWAYNIAN resents work and sacrifice on the part of each of you. It rep ' When you have completed your formal education at Norwayne and you have taken your place beside other citizens in this community or other communities, you will be measured not on the basis of the size of the community or the number of persons living in that com¬ munity, but solely on the type of contribution you make, be it small or large. Along with the education that you have gained, I admonish each of you to develop an understanding of and an appreciation for the little things within your grasp. This idea is well expressed in Kipling’s If We Only Understood ; There are gems of wondrous brightness Ofttimes lying at our feet, And we pass them, walking thoughtless, Down the busy, crowded street. If we knew, our pace would slacken, We would step more oft with care, Lest our careless feet be treading To the earth some jewel rare. MayGod guide you in all your endeavors and success follow you all the days of your life. Assistant Principals It is indeed a profound pleasure to con¬ gratulate you for having successfully passed one great milestone and to offer you my sin¬ cere wishes for a happy and prosperous fu¬ ture. My advice to you may be elegantly ex¬ pressed in the words of the poet William Makepeace Thackeray: In the world as in the school, You know how fate may turn and shift The prize be sometimes to the fool, The race not always to the swift. Who misses or who gains the prize Go, lose or conquer as you can; But if you fall or if you rise, Be each, Pray God, a gentleman. Gladly do I extend sincere praise for the excellency of your fine efforts in the publication of this third edition of the NORWAYNIAN. May your success of today prove but a mere beginning of your expected accomplishments of to¬ morrow. May God guide you in your choice of future activities, and provide you with the strength and fortitude to carry them out effectively. You have made a wonderful start. Good luck. Faculty MRS. D. E. The many things you’ve done - The classwork, meetings, studies and the days of fun - We’ll miss them all; deep in our hearts it ' s true; We never shall stop praising you. To classmates, teachers too, The time has come to bid you all a fond adieu. Tho’ we must part, memories will e’er remain Forever in our hearts with deep acclaim. To parents, we revere The days of toil and labor suffered here; Our prayer each hour to God who reigns above Shall ask the blessings for faithful love. Out into this world we go, Not knowing what we’ll find, We’ll cherish all the love you gave; We’ll keep thee e’er in mind. We ' ve reached the crossroad; There we know success lies straight ahead. Norwayne, Alma Mater, dear school of our birth we hail! So as we leave Norwayne, We’ll always cherish all the things that we have gained; Our hearts are filled with gratitude today; May God bless and guide us, this we pray.
