First Honors Banquet Above: Chris Hanzie received three scholarships to Ashland ■ during the Honors banquet. Above right: Students participating in the Ohio Tests of Scholastic Achi recognized. Right: Jan Miller receives the Dr. Fosti nursing scholarship. During the school year, many students receive awards for their accomplishments without any recognition. On the evening of May 22nd, Nor- wayne High School held it ' s first Honors Ban- quet in the school ' s history to recognize out- standing students in various areas. Students were recognized in each academic area by their respective teachers. The program began with a presentation by three police chiefs representing Wayne County. Doug Zimmerly received the Tina Harmon Memorial Scholarship Award. Other individ- ual senior scholarship awards went to Laurie Leslie, Chris Hanzie, fan Miller, Doug Zim- merly and Denise Valentine. Several awards highlighted the evenings pro- gram. Lisa Allen was recognized as one of the top sixty students in the State of Ohio in receiv- ing the Martin Essex School for the Gifted Award. Lisa will participate in an intense week of study at Ohio State University. Lis a was the first student in Wayne County to receive the award. Michele Menegay was recognized as a Na- tional Merit semi-finalist. She is the first stu- dent at N.H.S. to receive the honor in several years. Several students were recognized for partici- pation in the Ohio Tests of Scholastic Achieve- ment. Freshman Corey Metsker demonstrated ability in various areas of study and was recog- nized for placement in the Algebra Achieve- ment test. Becky Zollinger ranked high in the area of French and Lisa Allen received high honors in English 111. Parents of the award winners were present to witness the presentations along with guest Ed- win Thompson, superintendent of Wayne County Schools. Students and staff plan to continue the banquet as a tradition at Nor- wayne High School. The program was orga- nized by Mr. McCauley, Miss Byers, Mrs. Kondik, and Mr. Schmeltzer, with help from Mrs. Coen, Mrs. Irvin, and Mrs. Haberbusch. 152
