Sophomores-Norman Twitchell, Whitney Smith. Adviser-M r. . Sampson. The following ofhcers were elected at the first meeting: President4No1'man Twitchell. Secretary-Catherine Scribner. Two members xx ere selected to repre sent the school on the Norwav Recrea tion Council They are Whitney Smith and Catherine Scribner although the othei memb is are invited to attend anv meetings of this council The stu dents are made to feel more a part of the communltv by having a vo ce in matters concel ning recreation fo them selves The Student Council has held meet- ings every week and collected the school news for the various newspapers. An interclass carnival, sponsored by the Student Council was held Saturday, February 5, 1944, followed by a coro- nation dance in the gymnasium. 'l bI'li'l'. 16 THE CADUCEU S THE YOUTH OF TODAY Today s youth IS confronted w1th many perplexing problems mostly r1s mg out of the war As never before this conflict IS bringing abrupt changes to the lives of our youths Because to day s youths are tomorrow s cltlzens lt IS well to consider what changes are taklng place in the lives of our youths Today s youths seem old beyond their years a change which has come qulck ly with the hurrymg of the times Th1S fact can be clearly seen m our eighteen year old boys Only a short while ago they were awkward shy high school kids typical of carefree youth Thelr elghteenth buthday now sees them cast off thelr toys for a new game-war The youth IS no longer a boy but a man se rlous thoughtful and responslble for He IS confident composed and has learned to be a gentleman to give honor and dlgmty to h1s uniform These and many other thmgs he has learned ln the game of war The glrls on the home front have changed They too are bemg made older by havmg to accept greater re spons1b1l1t1es They find many demands for their services ln the home ln part time Jobs and ln defense work Often tlmes the teen age girl has to take the place of mother while the real home maker IS working She IS needed to serve ln patrlotlc enterprlzes She has to take on many of the boys Jobs as her big brother IS now dolng a bigger and more important Job She w1ll1ngly accepts these added tasks but not wlth out becommg more of a woman Her thoughts are mostly of vsar especially if she has a father brother or sweet heart engaged in the deadly combat The immediate future of the boys representlng our youth IS already decld ed for them as soon as they become eighteen for then they can plan on bemg called 1nto the service of their country The tralnmg they will recelve and the experiences they will encounter w1ll be a factor determmmg their places ln the post war world For the girls their immediate future IS not so easily declded Instead of at tendlng colleges as formerly many are respondlng to the urgent call for work ers Many becommg serious mlnded and urged by the rushing times enter into marrlage with a partner who is m the service It IS dxflicult to condemn or proclalm the advlsablllty of thls step It 1S true that the war IS creating some excellent positions for the govern ment IS glvmg training to ambitious youths who could not afford It 1n peace times An example of this IS the Cadet Nurses Corps for glrls In th1s the ex penses are pald by the government and the girls who qualify can become nurs es and take a useful part m the post war world Lucky is the boy who is chosen by the OITICIHIS in his particular branch of the service to recelve special lzed trammg ln some field Thls ex perience w1ll be valuable to him later on and wlll make him an asset to the future of our country Nevertheless lt is estlmated that the future generation w1ll have a shortage of much needed technical and profes sional experts Our schools and colleg es are suffering a decreased enrollment Our blggest hope IS that our youths w1ll return to the schools after the war and learn to make a useful place for them selves in a peace vsorld Today s youths are confident that the changes ln their life will aid them ln facing the future bravely -C Scribner 44 1 ' ' . .
