X , SENIOR HI TORY About four years ago, or to be exact, three and two-thirds years ago, on a bright sunny morning in early September, a crowd of eager, innocent-faced young- sters entered the august portals of X01'W2llli lli and were patronizingly told by the upper classmen that assembly would be held in the Gym. They truslingly waited there for some one to come-they didn'tl What a change! Xow there leaves this same school a group, greatly reduced in numbers, but bettered in body and mind by that institution. This class has been, we believe a good one in many ways, and we sincerely hope that we have added few gray hairs to Mr. Coles collection. We hope that by the end of the year every boy will have been out for some team. You remember we won the cup last year for the greatest interest and participation in athletics. On the scholarship side, we have live members in the Honor Society, and four of the five members of the National Athletic Scholarship Society. Our class is talented also, being lucky in having the service ot such splendid natural comedians as Tommy Hay, Ray Chapin and Alice Bailey to case the pain of just one darn class after another. Such sheiks as Tom Brown, Ed Firby, Ray Fay and Happers as llelen Sehlae- ter and Ruth Hirbe, will long be remembered and revered for their wisdom in alf- fairs of the heart by the children of the lower classes also. But as it is customary to give words ot advice in parting to the lower classes and as it is eonceited to speak only of ourselves, we say to the rest of you, ado your best to be the most successful class old X. H. S. has ever turned out, the most sports- manlike, the hardest fighting bunch in athletics and youill surely conie out all right. .-12... lll! lllll,E LEAFJ' THOMAS W. Now, we are rash and impulsive by nature, but have been exceedingly wary about definitions ever since the ill-starred occasion ,when we unfortunately blurted out that a hamlet was a small ham, so asuming a. grave and meditative expression, we told him that we would think it over and report on the following day. Accordinfflv th-it eveninv' after collecting Noah Webster's Dietionarv the an . f ' sv r- V 1 Hieyclopedia. Bright-Ann-l-Can, and other periodicals of a like nature, we flung our weary carcass down. upon the cushions of an over-stuffed what-clo-you-call-it, and prepared to concentrate. As we delicately nibblcd at a inorsel of iishfood with one hand, and agitated our cerebral regions with the other, negligently pursuing from time to time an errant Ueootiet' lost in the dense tropical foliage covering our top- pieee,-We linally evolved the following: A Sophomore is a biped of the genus High School Student, in xvhorse nature are combined the most characteristic traits of thefthree other speciesmof this-gmius: namely t-he indubitalsle insoueianee of the Fresliinen, the illimitable crust of the Junior, and the celestial conceit of the Senior. They were imposing persons were th aforementioned ladies, their coats of chinchilla and baby fox, respectively, muffled their snowy throats and almost hid their silken knees. The rest were chiffon hose and golden shoes with four-inch heels. The shining boulders, that dangled from their obvious and ornamental ears, shot gleanis of flame into the humble air. They were the most wonderful beings that Reginald de Lacy Ambersweth had ever beheld, as they sailed toward him he compared them, mentally, to Aphrodite and Pallas Athene. lt seemed an impos- sibly rash presumption for such an insignificant nobody as himself to address the magnificent ereaturesg yet desperation propelled him forward, and he did the rest. The Misses Gliqluot and Gondola found themselves confronted by the heir of Am- bersweth. i The youth quailed before the east iron glare of the damselis eyes, but he cleared his throat and spoke bravely. lf, quoth he, 'fain Reginald Ambcrsweth-l've something frightfully important to say to you ers-ladies-H he ceased, and wiped his steaming brow. Just drive around, Jennings, he told the sedate and horror-stricken chauffeur, and the lights shone and the post-theatre crowds hurried on, he briefly outlined his woes. Audrey and this fellowj, he confided, are going to have dinner at the Plaza tomorrow night. Ry conferring with the Plaza head-waiter, I can find out where their table is- which of you shall it be? I don't mind, truly. Well, now,'J considered Miss Clicquot, with the air of a connoisseurf, you know one of us is good, two of us is better! Take us bothf' Gloria nodded. You're both too good, exclaimed the young man ardcntly. Let's drive out to the Bamboo Gardens and dance. I'm hungry. And so that was that! On their way out, the three became very good friends. Arc you New York- ers ? asked Reggie Ambcrsweth deferentially. Yeah,D said Miss Cliquot. I ami. Gloria. was born in Syracuse . . . Our names aren't our Very owny-own, Reggie. Mr. Ambersweth noticed with extreme pleasure that he was accepted as an old pal by the versatile young ladies. I picked 'em out. Glory wanted to be a wop, so I called her Gloria Gondola. Clever, eh? I donno where I hear that name, Gondola 5 but it sounds swanky. I had a View for French stuff, so I picked my Parce tag off a ginger ale bottle. Itm sure crazy about it . . . have a lotta trouble spellin' it thot L They werenjt the sort of girls that Reginald had ever known, but they were certainly amusing. Miss Cliquot was a vivacious and witty maiden, the livelier and more talkative of the two, but Gloria was pretty and soft-eyed. She had be- gun to appreciate the bland good looks of Mr. Ambersweth, so she held his hand between her two small warm ones while Nanettc chattered like a parakeet. K The remainder ef the night and an hour or two of the morning were spent very pleasurably at the Bamboo Garden. Full pfrfun-andichicken chow-mein airdfraspberry ice, the girls took turns dancing with the blissfully happy Ambersweth, who, was not an especially good dancer- Dancingis not just in my linejj he said apologetically as he stepped a, second time upon Gloria's golden toes. The rc- sultant glow was still in little Gloria Gondolais sweet face, shining from under the vanishing cream, powder, rouge, lipstick, mascara and eye-brow pencil, when she faced Nanette in their cozy boudoir. ' Why Glory, deariej' marvelled the sprightly Miss Cliquot, ruiiiing her own flaming locks, you look so joyful-wha1ssamatter?,' Miss Gondola's reply was somewhat irrevelant. lim dyin, to get a close-up of that Lorrimer girlj, she said softly. The next evening found the two ornaments of the footlights-row arrayed like Solomon for splendor and magnificence, if not for abundance. Reginald could not have been more elated had his dinner engagement been with Fannie Brice and Pola Negri. He was not oifensive to the eye himself, he was possessed of a stripling fairness that made him at his best in the black-and-white of evening clothes. His young face went a bit crimson as he felt the beat of a few concentrated stars when they entered the Plaza 5 there were some people who knew the erstwhile sedate and staid young scion of the ancient and honorable Ambersweths. They busied themselves with menus, and Reginald had ample opportunity to observe the traditionally immense appetite of the American chorus girl. He didn't feel especiallyhungry, and was quite content to feast upon the beauty of his two fair companions. Nanette and Gloria were consorting over the comparative palatability of .fruit or oyster cocktails. Once Nanette said Clover Clubi' aloud and Gloria withered her with a glance of scorn. Reginald suppressed a growing desire to laugh, looked up suddenly, and beheld Audrey Loirrimer enter, the usual hard-Hearted Howard in tow. Reggieis face grew grave. A whispered word conveyed the knowledge to his guests. The three regarded Miss Audrey Lorrimer and her companion with very var- ious emotions. Reginald's heart contracted with wistful longing as he noted the loveliness of his adored one in silver tissue and amethysts. He occupied several good seconds in gazing at the dark and villainous character who :sat opposite her, basking in the radiance of her smiles. Envy like a Hame seared poor splendid little Gloria as she gazed into the fair patrician face of Audrey. She's skinny, Miss Gondola assured herself pathetical- ly, knowing that the Lorrimer heiress was a slender Venus. Poor Gloria! Nanette dropped her spoon and stared dumbly at the person with Audrey. Sweet spirits of nitre I she said slowing and distinctly. Her face was ashen under the shellac intervening. Her lovely mouth flew open. She swayed in her chair. Nanniel', cried Gloria. Miss Cliquotl What is wrong ?', ejaculated Mr. Ambersweth. Nanette drank a glass of water, and regained a bit of her composure. Her . .-34.- THE MAPLE LEAF 4 green eyes blazed, hor lips set in a grim narrow line. She turned to her corn- panions. At sight of Audrey, sitting alone, with bowed head, Reginald arose, took little tlloria.'s arm and went to her. 'Phat night there were two hearts out of three very happy. Everyone remembers the rhyme which begins, Ulf at first you don't succeed,- try, try again? Lately a greatf deal has been said about making our failures step- ping stones to inal success 5 indeed, statistics would doubtless shovv, did they exist, that hundreds of young people have been advised not to Worry too much about do- ing a thing right the first time, as they may always try again. And yet, there is a price which one pays for failure. It is natural that the first enthusiasm for a task should fade after it has been done once, unsuccessfullyg and there is a certain bitterness about a battle won in the ashes of a previous defeat. And in further proof of my statement I offer the well-known saying f'Oppor- tunity knocks but oncef' This certainly is true, for the time, resources, and ability for accomplishing certain things are not granted a second time by Fate. By all means .try and try again, if you fail 5 but put your Whole time, your un- divided attention and your utmost ability into each task the first time you attempt it,---and you will avoid paying the price of failure. J. GARCIA A graduate of Colgate University in the class of 1929, Mr. Garcia had previously attended Berea College, Ken- tucky. He was a noted track athlete at both institutions. While at Berea he held the intercollegiate record for the half mile, 2 minutes, 2 seconds. .Xt Colgate, four- teen years later, he ran the two mile in 9 minutes, Mr. Garcia is the head track coach at N. H. S. Un- der his control, track athletics has assumed a place with football and basketball as a major sport in N. H. S. and has been supported as such. Track, which had heretofore received only an indifferent response when the annual call canie, gave our coach an agreeable surprise when he found nearly lifty men out the first night. After the usual procedure of training, which always before had made the as- piring runners decide that they would rather spend their time in a less strenuous occupation, our squad was only slightly reduced. This squad was the one that en- gaged Clyde in our first track meet, which we easily won T95 to lVe closed our season with the Little Big Seven meet at Oberlin. Against the eonibined schools of the league we scored some 25 points. Our miler, 'Brom Clarke broke the league record in that event by running it in 12131. llay Miller won the pole vault at 1O:6. A great deal of credit for such a revival of interest in track must be given our coach, Mr. Garcia, who worked unfalteringly toward the success of the season. The prospects for the spring of 1926 are excellent. An unusual number of candidates are out.
