Spirited and enthusiastic fans were a factor in helping the Norview Pilots relinquish a hard-fought 8 and 2 record. The Pilots started off their 1970 season with a victory over Kellam, 22-O. The following week the Pilots traveled to Cox to hand the Falcons a 20-0 whipping. With two opening victories to their credit, the fired-up Pilots, before a home capacity crowd, gnawed at the superior Wilson defense and dealt the Presidents an 8-O upset victory. It was actually the tremendous work of the Pilots' defensive unit led by Otis Purvis, Walt Kindred, Harry Minium, and Tim Albert that tortured the Wilson runners and receivers. Before that victory, Wilson had beaten the Pilots for the past two years. Norviews next game was away to face a tough and powerful Princess Anne team. The end result was an upset defeat of 12-7 handed by the Cavaliers. In the weeks to come, Norview regained its momentum after their loss to P.A. and defeated Lake Taylor, Granby, Kempsville, and Bayside in route to an Eastern District clash with Maury. There was a near capacity crowd at Foreman Field to watch thelbattle for the Eastern District Crown. But, the Pilots could do no right and the score proved it, Maury 31 and Norview 0. This was the second defeat for the Pilots and the Commodores won the Eastern District Crown. The last home game that the seniors would attend matched Norview against B. T. Washington. It was a hard fought game until the last quarter when Norview got serious and won with a 14-O victory. It was the Pilots sixth shut-out in ten outings. lt was the superb coachmanship of Bob Tata andthe fantastic running of Larry Stepney that illustrated the power of the Pilots. Credit should also be given to the other offensive players and to the rock-hard defense for Norview which only gave up an amazing 67 points for the season.
