Libra Hiollilngswoirth Class of 1970 This ls Norview S!- T' xi-Vg ' Ji ff, . : Norview School Building In The Early 1900's. A Community: Norfolk in the early years of the 1900's was a bustling community. The excellent harbors of the Chesapeake Bay had made Norfolk a thriving city, growing and expanding. World War I veterans began pushing out into the country , from the Norfolk city limits which, at this time were only what we now know as the downtown area. Due to the importance of the Ocean View, people began moving into that direction. They found the Norview area most suitable for settling since it was mid way be- tween Norfolk and the beaches of Ocean View. From these two places, Norview was named. The farmhouse at the top right corner com- prised the first Norview school building, serv- ing as the elementary, junior high and high school. Growing as it was, a new school build- ing was soon needed. In 1924 a new high school was built and that building serves as A School the Junior High School today. The farmhouse which stood on the sight was moved and con- tinued on as the elementary school. The build- ing we are presently in was built in 1952, mak- ing Norview the second newest high school in Norfolk. . As you can see Norview High School has come a long way since the old farmhouse and its first graduating class of two girls. Today we have a student body of 2,500, with modern chemistry and language labs and new equip- ment which complements our educational opportunities. Norview has a heritage we can be proud of, from the time our football teams were State champions in 1955 and 1959, to the time we were Eastern District Champs in 1969. Nor- view is unique, the very name, the very history, the very legacy. 70' '-sq 'Y 'tr l ACADEMICS This is you . . . We look back over the twelve long years and there is a sadness en- twined with the gladness. We remember our- selves as sophomores, eager to jump into the step of Norview, yet doing so precariously be- cause we were not sure just exactly what the step was. Then, before we knew it, we had elected Donna Nugent to guide us through our junior year. That was the year we got our class rings, our first tangible sign of becoming a senior. As juniors, we thought about the com- placent and sometimes arrogant attitudes of the seniors and could hardly wait to have that privilege. We remember the Junior-Senior Prom, eager for the time when we would be honored. That time has finally come, and now, it is slowly slipping away. We anxiously awaited what the future holds, yet we can not help reminiscing on the twelve years gone by. As each day draws nearer to graduation, we our- selves are drawn nearer to each other, for we know it is our last year together, the last year many of us will ever see each other. The glory of being a senior is unique. We enjoy the privileges and responsibility that we so long dreamed of, yet we realize that next year each will go his own way, not as 650 strong, but as one individual, each with his own memories. For us, the annual staff, 1970 was a year of change, a break away from tradition. lt was a year of compromise, of tense nerves as deadlines ap- proached and of adulation as we turned back the pages we had created, again becoming filled with the excite- ment that had inspired them. We have done our best to try to reflect the life at Nor- view this past year and to pioneer a unique yearbook. We realize that the change might not please everyone, but one thing we learned this year was compromise. This yearbook represents Norviewg body, mind, spirit, emotion, and soul. We assure you that much of that soul could be found in Room 213 during 6th bell, many Saturdays and holidays, during lunch, and long into the evening. Our ultimate goal in creating this yearbook was to give you as much pleasure in reminiscing 1970 as we had in presenting it to you. These students are recommended by the faculty and then voted on by fellow classmates. The week that lies ahead for these students is one that they never forget. They learn not only the fundamentals of state gov't, but also about people themselves, for, there are representatives from all over Virginia. Each delegate is assigned to a dorm or city where they learn the procedures of city and state gov't. The most important aspect of Boys and Girls State is the opportunity of participation. Each student is allowed to run for any office he desires! Rivalry between the various cities is evident from the first day. Each are competing against one another in sports, elections, and dorm inspection. An award is given to the city which has shown the most enthusiasm, cooperation, leadership, and spirit. Row 1: R. Larry Stepney displayed the fine skill which was to last throughout the season by racing for 129 yards and four touchdowns. The next week Norview played host to the Cox Fal- cons. Leading by one point, with 1:08 in the half, Nor- view's Elvin Wilson went 65 yards down the sideline to make the score 14-6 at half time. After another Cox score, Norview's Ron Smith intercepted a Cox pass and ran it to the nine yard line, all Norview needed now was Stepney's breaking through the line for the final score, 22-12. With high hopes the Pilots next traveled to Wilson for a key game. The Pilots dominated the game in the first half despite Wilson's 8-6 lead, but plagued by injuries in the second half, Norview fell to the favored Presi- dents and defending champions by a 29-6 score. The Pilots rallied the next week to crush the Princess Anne Cavaliers 33-14. The Pilots totaled 384 yds. in total offense to P.A.'s 187. This win made the Pilots one of the top contenders for the Eastern District Crown. The game against Lake Taylor was the first city battle for the Pilots. Norview easily won, 31-O with Stepney and Casiano leading the way thru Lake Taylor's de- fense. This made Norview's district record 4-O. Named To All Tidewater Stephney! He's out for another gain against Princess Anne. Casiano leads blocking for all-Metro tn showing a bit of concern Lx in Stephney sprouts wings against Cox Pilots Record 8-2 Skeet does it again to defeat P. A. The next week the Pilots traveled to Forman Field for its first meet against B. T. Washington, a team just added to their Schedule. Although the Bookers played a tough 3rd quarter they were no match for the mighty Pilots who easily took the game 34-O. Steptney added a new school record with 92 yd. touchdown run. The Pilots played an unforgettable homecoming game Oct. 31 by hooking the Bayside Marlins 52-6. A half-time lead of 18-O made the Homecoming festivity a little brighter. On Nov. 11 Norview fans saw the Pilots participate in one of the most exciting games of the season. With a lead of only one pt. in the 4th quarter the mighty Pilots racked up 29 pts. in the final seven minutes for a 49-20 victory over the Kempsville Chiefs. Now the Pilots with a 7-0 district record, the outcome of the game with Maury would determine the Eastern District Championship. The last home football game that seniors would at- tend matched Norview with city rival Maury. The winner of this game would also receive District crown. Norview, still a top contender for the regional playoff berth lead by 7-6 score at the half. With nine minutes left in the game Stepney scored making the final score 13-6 and giving the Pilots the Eastern District Championship for the second consecutive year. H.
