All courses in the Social Studies Department are aimed directly at the goal of building competent citizenship for our democratic society. To achieve this goal required courses in U.S. and Virginia History and Govern- ment provide a background and the fundamental concepts for active participa- tion in everyday life. An elective course in World History broadens the student's outlook of cultural concepts and their interactions. ' Either Economics, Internation Relations or Problems of Democracy is studied in connection with U.S. and Virginia Government. Each course offers the possi- bility for the application of government concepts in that particular area. Personal Finance is an elective offered via television. The ways to become a wise consumer are stressed. Possible combinations of various courses may be arranged to form a unit to count toward a major in Social Studies. Upon graduation the students can become active participants in our ever chang- ing American civilization.
