In December of 1958 the State Board of Education adopted a new policy which will affect the Class of 1965, the Freshman class of this year. Now, instead of the 19 units required for graduation for the Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors of this year, the number of units required will be increased to 23, at least 16 of which must be earned in grades 9 through 12, for the classes beginning with 1965. Three types of diplomas will be awarded according to the program of studies pursued by the pupil. Each of these programs may lead to college entrance. The three types are: College Preparatory, which is intended for those with above average ability. General, designed for those who plan to major in a certain field and wish to have a sound general education. Business, for those who wish to specialize in a particular area of business. Beginning with the class of 1965, the following requirements must be met in order to receive a diploma: A. Three years of a foreign language must be taken for the College Preparatory Language diploma. Four years of mathematics will be required for the College Preparatory Technical diploma. B. Those who wish to receive the General Diploma must have a minimum of four units in a major or specialized area. C. Six units in a selected business field are required for the Business Diploma. 4
