The similarities of the two range wide. Both are leading seaports, Moji Qpronounced Mo- geej is the First port of call for many European ships sailing to Japan via the Indian Ocean. As in Norfolk, coal is a major Moji export. The coal Fields on Kyushu fthe southernmost Japanese is- land on which Moji is locatedj are almost at the port's backdoor. Moji is also a rail hub, serving as the starting point of the Kyushu railway. Japanese trains rumble south- ward through a 17-year-old tunnel from Shimonoseki on the main island of Honshu. In 1958 a 2.2-mile highway tunnel opened between Shimonoseki and Moji, ending a long dependence on ferries. The Population of Moji is about 200,000 Ccom- pared with Norfolk's estimated 330,000.5 Moji also exports steel, cement, glass and Hour. Yawata, the 'gPittsburgh of Japanf, is only a few miles away. Moji is not the center of military activity that Nor- folk is, but the port played an important role during the Korean VVar. Norfolk's afhliation with Moji began in April 1958 when Mayor W. Fred Duckworth gave a replica of the Norfolk Mace to a Japanese ship captain to take to Moji's mayor, Momotaro Yanagita. Mayor Yanagita sent Duckworth a Japanese doll in retum and Norfolk's mayor said the city was hon- ored to be the sister city of Mojif' Another Japanese ship, the Chicago Maru, docked in Norfolk and brought another letter from Yanagita. On the 14th day of July, he wrote, the day when the Chicago Maru entered our port, Moji Muni- cipal Assembly meeting made a decision with unani- mous agreement by all 36 municipal assembly mem- bers that Moji would affiliate with Norfolk, Va., as a sister city. It was the first time an East Coast city became a sister city of a Japanese municipaity. Several U.S. midwest and western cities have taken part in the sis- ter city program, including St. Paul, Minn., which is affiliated with Nagasaki. The object of such a relationship is to improve in- ternational understanding. With this in mind, we the staff of the 1961 PILOT,,' have decided to use this as the theme for our book. Now, instead of the 19 units required for graduation for the Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors of this year, the number of units required will be increased to 23, at least 16 of which must be earned in grades 9 through 12, for the classes beginning with 1965. Three types of diplomas will be awarded according to the program of studies pursued by the pupil. Each of these programs may lead to college entrance. The three types are: College Preparatory, which is intended for those with above average ability. General, designed for those who plan to major in a certain field and wish to have a sound general education. Business, for those who wish to specialize in a particular area of business. Beginning with the class of 1965, the following requirements must be met in order to receive a diploma: A. Three years of a foreign language must be taken for the College Preparatory Language diploma. Four years of mathematics will be required for the College Preparatory Technical diploma. B. Those who wish to receive the General Diploma must have a minimum of four units in a major or specialized area. C. Six units in a selected business field are required for the Business Diploma. 4 ard MR. C. W. PERDUE Principal of Norview High School We proudly dedicate the 1961 Pilot to our principal, Mr. Charles VVillarcl Perdue, Mr. Perdue came to Norview in February, 1946. At this time he served as Physical Education Instructor and track coach. From June, 1946, to June, 1947, he was on leave to receive his M.A. degree. After receiving his degree he returned to Norview to serve as Assistant Principal. In January, 1952, he was recalled to the Navy, but returned to Norview on January 31, 1954. Also in 1954, he became acting- Principal, and in 1955 he was appointed Principal. He served as President of the Norfolk Education Association for 1958-59, and was re-elected for 1960-61. Besides this, he has served on many National Educational Association, Virginia Educational Association, and Norfolk Educational Associational committees for educational de- velopment. We are proud to dedicate the annual to Mr. Charles Willard Perdue, in appreciation for all the work he has clone for our school, community, and city. A tourist sail- ing into either harbor would have to look closely to see the signs that distinguish them. The waterfront of Moji reminds one of Norfolk, with its wharves and ware- houses. The one distinguishing feature of Moji harbor is the line of hills and moun- tains in the background. This is in contrast to the low': land of Norfolk. L . Q . I . The minds, hearts, and souls of the Norview stu- dents are as delicate and intricate as the hue works of the Japanese. The faculty shapes and molds the stu- dents much the same as the workmen formed the delicate Japanese dolls. The workmen lovingly shape the crude lines of the raw materials into a gracefully beautiful work of art. This same love and dedication is ever-present as the faculty forms useful, intelligent ll f Guidance is an important keynote for the Norview students, Just as the Japanese workmen needed help and planning for their creations, the students need the counseling and guidance of our faculty, and ad- ministrators. They all take a very active part in all phases of our school life . . . from classrooms . . . to activities . . . to organizations . . . to sports . . . they are as vital to Norview as the tools to the workmen. l iii ',,,, v ,,,.-.-..,....,in.,,M...a,,,,,'-1 ,,,,...,.......--1 T Y W Z . The rough and rugged road through high school begins as the Fresh- men Hrst step into Norview, bewildered, overwhelmed at the thought of the next four years. As a Freshman, the student has little indication of what his plans are for the future. As a Sophomore, he begins to form some ideas about his life's work. How- ever, when he becomes a Junior, his thoughts turn more to his college plans, his ring, his Junior-Senior Prom, and the thrill of soon becoming a Senior. Then, as the last day of his Junior year approaches, he real- izes that next year will bring harder work, more study. He thinks that maybe he liasn't spent his last three years too wisely. It is at this time that he sees the importance of his high school education. .uygrlgn D. Warrington, Pres. M. Dixon, V. Pres. J. Stevenson, Sec. - In Hg what? ' I . V 4 1 ' . 'Freshmen at last!
