The doors fly open as the stream of students come out after school. On the shady side of the school a group sits, talking and laughing. Three boys play catch in front of the gym. We hear drums and saxophones from the vocational building as some band members practice a march. These are some scenes around school that will be remembered. More settings for more scenes can be seen as we travel around the cam- pus with the cameramen. Some girls discuss sewing problems on the steps of one of the two Home Economics cottages as club members walk toward Hut 4 for a meeting. Broad Creek Junior Hi-schoolers wait for a school bus and one turns to wave at a friend crossing the lawn. G6 Sckoof .. Our school celebrates its 25th birthday The old farm house that served as the lirst Norview school building This is the pageant of a community and of a school. Amid the plowed field, under the sky where Indians roamed not too long ago, on the road where Civil VVar soldiers marched, and the families of VVorld XVar 'idoughboysu and G, T- .loes traveled a settlement was begun. A large two-story farmhouse was raised This was later the first Norview School. The location was destined to be a local point of interest, mainly because it was midway between Norfolk and Ocean View, from which two places Norview was named. It was also near one of the world's greatest seaports and from such things it grew. The first school building was soon needed. Wliztt we now call the main building was the second school and was meant to accommodate 300 students- The elementary children from the entire country moved into the old farmhouse, which had been on the school lot, but which was moved so that the foundation of our main building could be laid. Honesty, integrity, scholarship, leadership-these characteristics are the basic fundamentals in which Norview's ideals are rooted. This is our code in part, and with these thoughts the first graduating class, two girls transferred from Maury, began the last class of high school in 1924. Miss Mabel Kiracofe, now Principal of Coleman Place School, became our hrst principal. Mr. ll, C. Barnes was appointed principal in 1924, and served twenty-one years until he became Director of Instruction in Norfolk County Schools. He was succeeded by M r. li. XV. Chittum. From the beginning, students have loved Norview, and every year it has im' proved. lt was the students who made the traditions which we still carry out. F ' - I Y..., Remembering its many successful years Early faculty members of Norview. Center is Miss Mabel Kiracofe who later became principal of Coleman l'lace School. The hrst class gift was two pictures. For several years the senior class has pre- sented a play in order to raise money for a class gift and it has become a tradition just as the Variety Show, junior-Senior Prom, Commencement programs, and magazine campaigns have become tradition. Now we have a stadium, improved auditorium, a beautiful campus, enlarged library, and new accessories in the school because of student participation in magazine sales, stage productions, contributions and campaigns. Always there were faculty members and the administration to help and guide Norviewites. Good Sportsmanship became a byword as the Pilots began earning cham- pionships in 1926 and l927. As the school grew, the Pilot's fame grew and good school spirit was developed. The enrollment grew and in 1939 the annex, in- cluding the cafeteria and fourteen classrooms was added. The annex became crowded, making the teachers shift of elementary grades still necessary. The main building completed in time for the l9Z4 school session. .w wang R an N .q,' in W 1. ff-Q, if wx at 9 .M R nf Q .W ,Vu ,. MARTIN UNlJlCRSTUlJTES Allie Tlarmon Jeanie Dowe Jackie Edmunds Anne Powers Then the zero hour and graduation SENIOR HISTORY We've been rodents or Freshmen, know-it-alls or Sophomores, children or juniors, and the Person, a Senior. Wie can remember Moe Bauer as the hero of our Freshman year and Murray Callan as our Sophomore hero. Our First printed Co-Pilot appeared when we were Sophomores and our band really began getting organized complete with uniforms. In our junior year we waited anxiously for the new vocational building to be opened. A new addition to our campus, the stadium, had already been proudly presented. A landmark down the road of high school life was the entering of the school into Group One. We remember Jimmy and Red Ore, Johnny Sheehan, and the other veterans and the post graduates who remembered Norview and returned. The Sophomore year will also be remembered for the first Annual Variety Show and for the organiza- tion of the swing band by a group of music fans. We laughed at the barber- shop quartette when they made a satire of their songs, and really applauded them when they gave out with the harmony in assemblies. WW: remember our nervous- ness when we applied for our first job during vacation. Pleading for a new dress or the use of the car and deciding on our dates were big problems in our Senior year. Every year we noticed changes in our school and the many alumni could always be depended upon to say, f'Gosh ! I hardly recognized our old Alma Mater ! Wie don't have to be reminded of those exams and report cards do we? And will we remember the big things in the year: The Senior Party, The Carefully Collected Autographs? You, can bet your Senior Ring we will! VVe remembered that Mr. Chittum, who was a freshman with us in our First year at hi, handed us our diplomas. He graduatedl' too, after 4 years with us into the position of Superintendent of Norfolk County Schools. XYe were sorry he was leaving Norview, but we were glad he planned to stay in Hour county for a while. i W Snapshots of scenes 'round o' Alma Mater Cliiiicsc I'l:xyL-rsg Faculty Pwscsg Xmas prcseiitsg Gzilmlmiu' by thc brick wnllg Nuinlrci' 45 ch:u'iot :lwnitsg Bziskellmll uiitnlcmrsg Kilgore the kutieg Ol' Alma Materg XVz1itiiig line at Number Z1 3 gang ci' palsg lflmlrly 'n Hctlyg Saucyg Drzmiutic poscg Mr. and Miss Norvicwg More gangs o' palsg Miss Bcamang jean, Peg, .Ieanneg Sadie-g Leg zirtg Miss Hoffmang Dandy Adams. Here comes the supporting cast IUNIORS As a reel', movie could not be produced successfully without the supporting cast, neither could a school run successful without the equi- valent. ln their Junior year, the class seemed to be always busy planning extra curricular activities. During this year, the nieinbers were eligible for nieinbership in clubs and classes. Plans had to be made for next year's courses, such as subjects to take for college entrance and vocations and many of us were old enough to take Retail Training and work after school. Some of us were old enough to take driver training, too, and the boys that earned their license proudly escorted their best girls to the Prom i11 l'Jad's car. Not since the Juniors first entered high school did they realize such a change. And last but not least, they passed their tinal exams, and waited for the Senior rings. uzziors MYERS 1 Working for today and planning for tomorrow, 1 eg' .-f - ., A .1 u -Q JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS i I Sflllllllillfjf Miss lflizzllwetli Must, ,Sif'UlI.X'UI',' -luliimy Myers, l'1'i'.vir1'v111',' lin-try Xlillizims, Trmzx 1z1'vr,' M11 Paul Sykes, C10-.SlflIlIX'l!l' .S'iHi11y: Donzilml Gray, Vim'-I'1'i'.x'z'df'nl.' .lczui Rcyimlmls, ,S'm'1'4'li1f'yg Hugh Stricklziml, Rvfurliv 54's JUNIOR CLASS HOMEROOM REPRESENTATIVES Siuzzdingz ,luck Fulfurfl, Clcm Rliucles, Tom X'Vimcl filling: Klzmrlciie Smith, Billie Evzuis, ,lcrry llmvmzm, llilly liryzuil, Lenoir Lewis, lizirlwzirzl lickzird. 7 'Z 41. Here comes the newsreel because our activities were always news. ACTIVITIES From singing in the Glee Club assembly to displaying posters by the Retail Training club, from publishing the C0-Pilot to representing' the school on the athletic lieldg all were part of the extra-curricular activity at NHS. Among the faculty vve found willing and capable sponsors who were responsible for many club successes, lf this production were old-fashioned, we could thank the won- derful students who demonstrated the Norview school spirit. Our zuhninistration gave us much school time for activities because they realized the value of them. The school clerk kept our records and funds straight and our olihcers and leaders worked hard to better our organizations. Clubs won permission to sponsor campaigns, contests, plays, publications and booklets, dances, compertitive sports, gifts to the school and other projects which were all successful. School would have been dull without many activities because they were all a real part of high school life. VVe are young artists planning posters for the HifY clean-up campaign. Down the hall the staff is pasting the dummy,' for the PILo'l' while next door the the reporters are checking their beats.,' In the auditorium an assembly isvbeing rehearsed. Outside the doors, a group is putting up a bulletin board and inside the library another group is ar- ranging a book display. A committee meets to plan for a dance, and two teenagers are running around the campus selling tickets. After school a group is trying to beautify their rooms. As the camera shoots the scenes of the busy highschoolers we see that almost every Norviewite had a part in some extra-curricular activity. cfivifim RFP 5 mlurl-ITx':L Hunt, Ilxlrlwarzn 'l'hwm:lwn, Miss SCUII, Vcggy IIitcg .S'lf111d1'1zy-Iizliic L4111nIm, I'ill XI tin IIQXN U'l'.XIN M 1 llrv mf IXm'jnlL' Cuzmly N I I lx A 'l'IIi VIII u1'lI'rnffn1111fx 3 C I . ill' . Bill Carter'g arm proved a good mainstay as he hit Dixon twice and Richard Strong once to boast a large score. DATE: SEPTEMBER 25 THERE WILSON Happy at their victory, the Pilots journeyed to VVilson only to bear the sting of defeat as the Presidents scored three T. lJ.'s. in the first half to win 18-0. Primer, Johnston, and McLean each scored in the first half when the hard-fighting Pilots brought them to a standstill, but l were unable to score. Norview boasted of a mighty line witl1 four of its line men making the All-City Team. Charles Fldrige, tackle, Honorable Mention, All- City, was a mainstay in the front wall and when he was there, opposing players rarely stayed. D. cheating Norview of their only victory over Suffolk, Tad Dixon scored two touchdowns: one on a pass from Carter and another on a 47 yard romp. These gave the Norview loyals hope when the Pilots took the lead 12-6 as time ran out. This is the last page of our year- book, the 1949 PILOT: It is not the end of the fond recollections that follow us page by page as we open and close it's covers. It has been fun spending these hours with you and now it's time to say so long until you take the PILOT out of the bookcase and re-enter with us the doors of Norview High School. YVQ, the statil, wish to thank those who have helped make our PILOT an anniversary edition to remember: Miss Joyce Raymun of Rices Photo Reflex, for her patience, good humor, and good photography. Mr. .lim Taylor, our group photographer, for tramping over miles of steps with us to get just the right spot for our picture. Mr. Iid. Swain, of Southern Iingraving, for his wise councel, and his personal interest and pride in the PILOT. Mr Lacy King of McClure Printing Company for the headaches he received pondering over the PILOT dummy and for his sincere good will and help. Mr. .Iohn Sykes and the print shop boys for printing our advertising blanks. Miss Jessie Beamon for her advice and hard work with the Art Stat? Mrs. Sue Chittum for keeping our phone calls straight and being our general information and loan center. Mr. Edwin Chittum, our principal, for his faith in us and in our PILOT. And finally OUR STAFF, the real producer of the '49 PILOT.
