Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1988 volume:

Norton High School Norton, Massachusetts We, as members of the class of ' 88, are proud to recognize Mrs. Veronica Gagnon for her outstanding work with our class for the past four years. She has been an outstanding advisor in many ways. Her extreme effort and tremendous enthusiasm have been the driving force behind our school spirit. Without her artistic talents and outstanding devotion, such activities as the prom, class night, the semi-formal, and our class trip to the circus, would not have been possible. We are one of the most spirited classes to pass through the doors of Norton High School and her en- thusiasm will help us to maintain that spirit. In addition to her help as an advisor Mrs. Gagnon has helped us individually. We will all miss her smiles and laughter which continually cheer us up, as well as the frowns she gives us when we are not doing our part. All in all, she should be commended for a job well done as both an advisor and a friend. For this reason, we would like to dedicate Sojourn ' 88 to her. 2 Appreciation A f Mr. George Devalk In addition to Mrs. Gagnon, our other class advisors, Mr. George Devalk, Mr. Peter Leddy, Mrs. Diane Martin, and Mrs. Elaine Reddy, have played a tremendous role in organizing our activities. At this time we would like to express our gratitude for their hard work and patience. Had it not been for their dedicated efforts, we would not have had such events as our farewell to seniors dance, the prom, the trip to the circus, and our senior class trip as well as the successful and imaginative fund raisers. Their thoughtful advice and friendship will continue to be inspirational and will be great assets to us in the future as well as to the future classes of Norton High School. CLASS OF 1988 Last year, Norton High School had the privilege of hosting a foreign exchange stu- dent from Copenhagen, Denmark. Thomas Ebling was a member of our class in every way: he was an outstanding student, athlete, and friend. He participated on the cross country and track teams and in the stage band. Along with these extra-curricular ac- tivities, Thomas was an extraordinary stu- dent, achieving academic success in all of his courses. Thomas returned to Denmark in June of 1987, but we still consider him an important member of our class. He remains a great friend whom we all miss. We wish him the best of luck for a prosperous future and will never forget the time he spent with us. We looked around, trying to recognize a face, Scared and insecure we were unsure of our place We had to have confidence and believe we could last We had to face the fact that over was the past. Four years seemed like a long time then, Now, as we look to way back when There was so much to do, so much to try. We had to be willing if our spirits were to fly. We set goals and to those we would yearn. During our stay, about ourselves we would learn Now our time has come and, yes, we have grown And to this school our skills we have shown. Countless are the memories we have made, Deep in our hearts they will never fade. The moments grow shorter as graduation draws near But do not worry, we need not fear — The time we spent here has not been in vain For through experiences much did we gain Now as we wear this cap, gown, and tassel We will move on to build life ' s castle. 60 1 Least favorite Group: Bon Jovi Actor: Sylvester Stallone Food: School Food Ice Cream: Strawberry Vacation: February ' 88 Video: Bad Favorite Whitesnake Arnold Schwarzenegger Pizza Chocolate Summer Sledge Hammer Actress — Molly Ringwald Summer sport — swimming Comic strip — Garfield School class — lunch Winter sport — skiing Hangout — Powerlines What Norton High School Needed most — February Vacation What Norton High School needed least — Forfeit 61 62 CLASS FLIRTS . . . The class of 1988 is having a ten year reunion in a not so typical setting — cruise to nowhere. But I ' m not surprised, our class was always full of originality and hasn ' t lost its touch. There is lots of excitement in the air as classmates from far and near anxiously board the cruise ship for a night of renewing old friendships on the ocean. As I pass out the name tags I can ' t believe how many familiar faces have changed, yet no one looks a day older than he did on graduation day. Unfortunately, there are a few who could not attend, but for such good reasons. Try this one, Richard Paulus is busy working on the old space station, he always did seem a little spacey, although he did win a Nobel prize. Speaking of a state of mind, Meghan DeSilva is a psychologist for NASA: Amanda McLeod is now an elementary teacher in the South teaching those kids of to eat grits the right way. Matt Breach couldn ' t reel himself away from his Fishing business in Florida. Oh, What ' s this? Talk about a grand entrance!! Steve Brazao just landed his private helicopter in the water, and Joe Murphy is rowing out to bring him to shore. Joe is also a psychologist! Who is in that black stretch limo? John Sweeney, that tanned devil, — it figures he would show up with a blonde on each arm — everyone knows he won millions in Megabucks! There is Kevin Foster sailing to shore in his beautiful yacht, we have all heard him give play by plays over the air describing Chris Gaddy and his great achievements with the Boston Red Sox. It looks as though everyone is already gabbing away, and the ship is leaving Boston Harbor. People are throwing streamers and confetti over the side and bidding us good-bye. Bon Voyage! The Boston Harbor is gorgeous and thanks to Chris Starratt, now a professional photographer, we will have these moments on film. Marlene Cookson is by her side writing on all the festivities to give everyone a copy of Who ' s who, Now a story of, and for our class. The band is beginning to play some of our old favorites like, This is the Time and The Time of my Life. The band members are friends of Chrissy Fortune, now a famous actress in New York, — you may have seen her in a few movies produced by Matt Berlo. The ship ' s deck is decorated with lots of glittering gold and abstract decorations thanks to Matt Dunn, now working for the illustrations department in Playboy. A special thanks to a New York realtor, our previous class president Sean O ' Shea, who put this entire reunion together. Many of our classmates seem to be involved with Law Enforcement. Tommy Peterson and James Franco are both state police troopers. Andrea Bianchini has become a state police officer, as has John Devin. You must have heard of Bill Donahue, who is known world-wide for his drug busts with tl FBI. They are all taking a bite out of crime. There ' s Mike Crum sitting with Craig Esperian. They are both living a life of luxury. Mike, is filthy rich and Craig is working as a stockbroker on Wall Street. Kathy Kmetz and Roberta Bassett are talking with their old friend Jimmy Farrell. He has received his degree in orthopedics. I ' m surprised Roberta would find time to come tonight. She is the Ambassador to France, and Kathy is a very busy businesswoman. Kathy has kept in touch with Kelly Burns over the years. Kelly is coaching High School Softball in her spare time and works as a Physical Education Teacher. According to rumors, Mike Chaplin has become a successful landscaper and owns his own business. Over there is Christine Migliorini who has achieved her college degree and is very happy with her family. Glen Shade also has attained a college degree and appears to be happy. And nobody can forget the infamous Michael Xavier Wynn. He just came sauntering in with his briefcase and three piece suit. He is the proud owner of a Boston bank. 3wr 70 to Bill Fisher, also a chef. On a dessert table there are tons of pastries made by Paul Bartlett. We can al also thank Jeff Zaccardi for the complimentary bottle of champagne and the open bar due to his success with the now world-wide chain of Zacky ' s Packys. After such a great dinner I think I ' ll go ou on the deck for a breath of fresh air. There ' s Christina Mansfield. What a tan!! She just arrived from her beautiful home in Bermuda where she is an interior designer. She lives with her husband and children. Who would think she would have time for a family? It is so nice to see old friends getting together. Christina and Kim Mueller have kept in touch over long distances and after all these years. Kim Mueller is also very successful, one of the leading doctors in the country. Kim has lots of news about old friends. She tells us Jennifer Kieser speaks three languages fluently. She now lives in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. I wonder if she has a chance to use them. Nico Flannery is involved in internationa relations. It is so exciting to listen to Jen and Nico exchange stories. It is also surprising to see how many people became teachers themselves. Who would have thought? Michelle Mclntyre became a nursery school teacher. Rumor has it she married into money and lives in a huge mansion. Michelle has kept in touch with her friend Tracey Cahill who also became a teacher in an elementary school. Rick Joyce became a Biology teacher and football coach. I heard his team does quite well. Rachel Pcolka became an elementary school teacher. She continues to play her French Horn and is passing along her talent to her many students. Patty Paioni teaches kindergarten. She is happily married to a rich construction worker. Bonnie Turner is also a kindergarten teacher and owns a beautiful sewing shop. Debbie Smedburg also has a career in child It ' s so incredible that two of our fellow classmates have received great honors. Aimee Dudley, an extremely busy scientist, found time to come to the reunion. She has just received a Nobel Prize for her extraordinary medical research in Biology. Lisa Makrinikolas just walked by. She is involved with the Peace Corps. Lisa had the honor of receiving a Nobel Peace Prize for her outstanding efforts for world peace. Look at Renee Brouwer! A movie star and Miss Majorette. She works with her husbanc who is also a celebrity. I just saw Lara Shaw and Kim Pare exchanging animal stories. Lara lives in California and is a vet. Kim is also a vet and raises Scottish Terriers in her kennel. Jen Lee is a psychologist who is very involved in research to help the mentally ill. On the dance floor is Kellie Tuttle. Kellie lives in New York State on a farm with her husband anc two children. Hey . . . there ' s Lynn Cronin dancing. She also lives in New York with her husband anc twin girls. Lynn tells us that she heard Valerie Milosh is a legal secretary for one of the most successful lawyers in the country! Michelle Mohan is here too. She is an executive secretary. So many of our classmates are extremely successful. Karen Ehrilich is an executive secretary too for a very busy and profitable company. I ' m surprised so many of our classmates found time to come to our reunion. Terri Johnson flew in from her penthouse in the Bahamas where she owns her own accounting firm. Tonia Cochran, an accountant, is married and has children. Dawn Everson has a very interesting career; she is a make-up artist. She has worked on many Oscar winning motion pictures. She is kept really busy with her husband and twin girls. Scott Shotzberger is also quite well-known. He has a Master ' s Degree in civi engineering and owns his own company. He is very happily married. Jay Francis is an engineer anc care. 1 71 eeps busy with the Army National Guard. Tim La Valley finished a four year term in the U.S. Air Force and now has a career in the Emergency Medical Service. Kelli Lynch moved to California and became an executive secretary. Sue Dudley is a legal secretary. John Bosworth and Dawn Baptista are very successful accountants. We have to watch out on the roads, Joe Pine is a state cop. I heard Lee Desrosier talking with one of our old classmates. Lee owns his own corporation and is very wealthy. Many of our classmates are involved in the science field. Sharon Mandosa is a sports therapist, and she works for our very own New England Patriots. Denise Harding is very wealthy. She has a Ph.D. in biology and travels to exotic countries with Tim Burrill. Debbie Esperian is a child psychologist with four children of her own. Tina Paquin is involved in science too. She owns her own clinic and is ... a nutritionist. Yvonne Jordan and Candy Gersin? Well, they manage a hotel together in Los Angeles and do you believe that Tanya Dockett is one of the owners — just one of many small world experiences shared by our classmates. Danny LaCivita married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Jordan, and, talking of getting married, Joe Ruffing got married while in the navy and already has a family. Remember Donny ' s wife, Cathy Governo, she has made herself quite a name in the medical field and for that matter so has Dawna Buck who owns Buck ' s Funeral Home. It probably wouldn ' t have been possible if she hadn ' t had the financial advice of Kim Johnson. You remember Kim, she became quite famous in New York for her successful CP. A. office and, speaking of successful, don ' t forget Danielle Munier, she made it to the top quickly, with the help of her husband, David. Kim Ellis manages her son ' s rock band; they are really good. I hear she buys all the band ' s outfits at Corey Kennedy ' s Store. That store has the best clothes around, probably because Corey buys most of the merchandise in Australia on summer visits. While she ' s there, if she looks close enough, on the beaches she may run into Bill Acker where he just kinda hangs out. Jim Woodward goes there to hang out with him sometimes. Did you hear about David Homesy, he ' s preparing main frames for Laurel Deslaurier, she is president of some computer company out of state, but she still visits once in awhile to watch Michele Urbanus ' s hockey team win. Well, the captain just announced that the ship is docking and I saw many exchanging phone numbers, promising to get together. Time really went by fast, and all of our classmates did very w 11 for themselves. I can ' t wait till the next reunion! Who knows what we ' ll be doing by then! 72 1 Aftosmes, Jody Alleyne, Lincoln Ambrose, David Andreasen, Paul Andrews, Bonnie Anifantis, Toula Bain, Scott Baptiste, Sheila Barac, Jennifer Belanger, Cheryl Battey, Cheryl Beard, Rebecca Beaulieu, Jerry Bennett, Jeremy Bileau, Rebecca Bliss, Eric Bliss, Tracey Boudreau, Elizabeth Bourdeau, Michelle Bratton, Daniel Breault, Virginia Briggs, Kim Brooks, Eric Brouwer, Mark Brown, Jennifer Brown, Karin Brown, Melanie Burum, Walter Busby, Tiffany Calhoun, Kerrie Campbell, Donna Casagni, Michelle Cataloni, John Cavallaro, Tanya Celeste, Frederick Chancy, William Clark, Cindy Close, Jamie Collins, Darlene Coolidge, Kimberly Cota, Bryan Cotton, Alison 74 CLASS OF 1989 tmggmmamam in Day, Michelle DeCamp, Paul DeCosta, Dawn Dennis, Mark Duel, Angela Doherty, James Doyle, John Dudley, Elizabeth Dufault, Dawn Dunlap, Jon Eddy, Jennifer Everette, Sheila Fiorentino, Laura Freitas, Scott Garvin, Charon Girelli, Christopher Goode, Bryan Gourley, Douglas Green, Deborah Grogan, Richard Hadayia, Charles Hanson, Christine Harlow, Brad Hayes, Michelle Hayward, Christine Hoffman, Stephen Horton, Tricia Hutchinson, Erica Igoe, James Igoe, Michael Ingalls, Krista Instasi, Joseph Ivins, Heather Jacome, Jennifer Jerome, Jeanne Jordan, Kathy Kavanagh, Jason Kelleher, Dennis Kelleher, Thomas Kiander, Keith Kinder, Odelle King, Richard Kollett, Kathryn Kontoulis, George LaCroix, Michael Lammi, Karl Larson, Jeremy Lavoie, Kimberlv v OF 1989 75 CLASS OF 1989 CLASS OF 1989 77 Acker, Andrea Armstrong, Wanda Avignon, Andrew Bassert, Violet Bennett, Leah Bliss, Cheryl Boudreau, Jamze Butler, Derek Callum, Jennifer Canto, Regina Carlson, Joyce Carpeno, Christopher Carr, Laura Chandra, Sangita Charboneau, Robert Choi, Michael Clark, Marie Connors, Stephanie Coolidge, Matthew Coote, Stephen Croteau, Jennifer Crum, Laura Ann Curran, Maureen Demas, James DeNu, Michele Dion, Neal Doherty, Peter Dufault, Heather Eckman, Linda Eckman, Melissa Ellis, Karyn Esperian, Lianne Farrington, Erik Fernandes, Michael Fraise, Jason Francis, Jeffrey Fuller, Teresa Giordano, Elizabeth Goodwin, Jon Grieve, Scott Griffin, Patricia Hadayia, Monique Hancock, Marica Hill, Jennifer Hiltz, Jean Houghton, Janet Howell, Michelle Ingalo, Nicole CLASS OF 1990 Juutilanien, Amy Juutilanien, Jeremy Kavanagh, Ursula Kelley, Thomas Keough, Edward Kornick, Myrna Lacaillade, Eric Lombardo, Denise Mackesy, Heather Mackinder, Lara Maher, Lauren Mansfield, Catherine Masone, Jessica McCurley, Sean McKenna, Kerrie Migliorini, Christopher Mohan, Heather Moore, William Munroe, Keith Murphy, Andrew Naismith, Theresa Nason, Kim Nichols, Sandra O ' Connell, Erin Peloquin, Robert Peterson, Michael Pompei, Matthew Portanova, William Powers, Adrienne Precourt, Shannon Paulino, Michelle Reams, Jason Rice, Amy Ridlon, Theresa Robbins, Christopher Robbins, Thomas Roberts, Christopher Robinson, David Ryder, Lucinda Shrems, Melanie Semas, Richard Shea, Kellie Silva, Lydia Sirtoli, Derek Smith, Kristine Smith, Michael St. Germain, Jason St. Pierce, Tracey CLASS OF 1990 Taylor, Wendy Texeira, Teresa Thomas, Amy Tierney, Terri Turner, Jennifer Valequett, Robert Viers, Alma Vinson, Laurie Waite, Russell Watson, Christine Weir, Lisa Weston, Krishna White, Stephen Wilson, Lisa Woodason, Jamie Wyatt, Vernon Yelle, Andrew Zommer, Matthew Not Pictured Beatrice, David Bingel, Jennifer Brazao, David Carlson, Keith Chisholm, Christine Durham, Deborah Earl, Joan Fernandes, David Reeman, Pete r Hassie, Kevin Laporte, Timothy Martin, Jeffrey Pierce, Christopher Powers, Michelle Rich, Elizabeth Ricks, Lana Rooney, Melissa Rubin, Melanie St. Pierre, Daniel Steenbruggen, Dustin Thomas, Amy Jean Turco, Gerald CLASS OF 1990 r — r Andreason, Michael April, Candace f Baptista, Michelle v-; A French costume Halloween party was held in October at Kathy and Chris Kollett ' s. Students also plan to see Les Miserables, the French based musical playing in Boston. The officers also plan to hold a Mousse and Movie, the annual Mardi Gras, and a French scavenger hunt. jSALUDOs! Each member is chosen for his characteristics of leadership, schol- arship, service and character. Under the direction of Mrs. Dolores Robbins, the so- ciety worked diligently to provide impor- tant activities for the school, such as a tutor- ing service, the College Day Fair, and the Winter Wonderland Semi-Formal. Their fund-raising activities, a bike-a-thon and selling balloons and Halloween candy, help provide money for scholarships that are given to deserving seniors. In addition to the Biology and History murals, students are adding another big painting to the English Department. More ceiling tiles and bulletin boards have brightened up plain areas, as have some very interesting paper-mache objects. For their own artistic gains, students have taken the annual New York trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, the Danforth exhibit, and the Garden Museum. 93 Newspaper Staff: (Front Row) Editors Paul Andreasen, Dawn DeCosta, Sangita Chandra, Advisor Miss Dzjiema (Back Row) Dawn Williams, Craig Nuttal, John Doyle, Spencer Zawasky, Michael VanDeurse, Nicole Ingala, Jen- nifer Christiansan, Catherine Mansfield, Gary VanDeurse NEWSPAPER Despite controversy over the right of ad- ministrative censorship, approved this year by the Supreme Court, Norton High School ' s newspaper, the Jouster Journal, has continued to produce an interesting and thought pro- voking publication. After a week of school spirit and support for all of Norton High ' s athletic teams, Friday night there was a pep rally and dance, followed by Saturday ' s game. The packed stands, cheerleaders, and the entire band showed great enthusiasm and spirit. The highlight of the afternoon was the homecoming ceremony, at which Mr. Wheeler announced Denise Harding as this year ' s queen, and presented roses to the following girls of the court as well: seniors — Tracey Powers, Michelle Mclntyre, Aimee LaRosee, and Debby Esperian, juniors — Andrea Meyers and Allison Cotton, sophomores — Jessica Masone and Denise Lombardo, and freshmen — Laura Martin and Christine Fernandes. 9 - ., The Norton High School Lancer Band once again had a successful season under the guidance of Director William MacMullen and drum majors Melanie Brown and Mark Wilson. Directing the auxiliary section of the band was Linda Dunlap along with captains Cathy Portanova and Christina Mansfield. The band started its busy season by providing entertainment at football games. Songs included Louie, Louie, Obsession, Percussion Solo from Jeopardy, and concluded with Hot Samba Nueva. The band also participated in the Somerset Music Town Festival and a marching parade. The Lancers also competed in the Quincy Christmas parade where they won three trophies. The marching band finished its season with the annual Band Banquet where awards for different achievements are given, thus topping off a most enjoyable season. • Woodwind Section: (L. to R.) Many factors were stacked against the new team: a new coach, the fact that no one on the team had played together, and no expectations of success. At the team ' s first practice, Coach Branco set one goal: a winning season. Despite some setbacks, Norton finished third in its division with a record of 9-5-1 thus making the playoffs in the very first year. The team grew together through the year and several players evolved into team leaders. Witn hard work, dedication, a great deal of un- expected and much appreciated support from both students ana parents, and the arrival of Jason Fraise, the team ' s leading scorer, the players made Norton ' s first soccer team unforgettable. iris ' octtt ) I 1st Row (L to R): T. We are especially grateful to our assistant editors, copy staff, and photography editors. We would also like to acknowledge the following people for their work above and beyond : Chrissy Fortune and Michelle Mohan for typing and Lara Shaw for her work on the ad campaign in addition to her other duties. We thank two faculty members — Mr. Peter Leddy for his help with photography and Mrs. Veronica Gagnon for her help with art. We owe a very special thank you to Matt Dunn for all of his art work, especially the cover design. Finally, we would like to say a special thank you to our parents, who lived with our problems and deadlines! Aimee and Eileen Acknowledgements At this time as we acknowledge those who have helped us with this year ' s yearbook, we would also like to acknowledge three very special people who have helped us and countless other students at Norton High School over the years. Mr. Frederick Kelley, Miss Evelyn Rapoza, and Mrs. Geneva Rounds have served Norton ' s students for a combined total of 92 years. Their contributions to the Norton School System have been tremendous and are too numerous to mention here. Mr. Frederick Kelley joined the faculty in 1954 and became chairman of the Math Department in 1958. Mr. Kelley has been involved in varied aspects of school life, serving as a class and club advisor, driver education instructor, and adult education teacher. In addition, Mr. Kelley could always be counted on to attend various school functions, and he has been one of Norton ' s most loyal sports fans. Mr. Kelley ' s enthusiasm and knowledge resulted in Norton ' s being one of the first communities to incorporate computer education into the curriculum; both he and his computer named Lance have been an integral part of Norton High School! Miss Evelyn Rapoza began her teaching career in Norton in 1955 and became chair- person of the Business Department in 1959. Miss Rapoza has helped many students at- tain success in business careers. Constant revision of the business curriculum, field trips, and guest lecturers have brought the school and the business community togeth- er. In addition to helping business students, Miss Rapoza ' s business skills and willing- ness to give many extra hours have been beneficial to the system and to other de- partments; she has served as the editor of newsletters, kept records and books, and supplied materials for system-wide use. Both students and faculty members will miss her help with our last minute requests. Mrs. Geneva Rounds came to Norton High School in 1963 and became chairperson of the Home Economics Department in 1974. The talents and guidance of Mrs. Rounds have enabled many students to experience the rewards of home economics, learn valuable life skills, find enjoyable new hobbies, and go on to careers in home economics. Meals and refreshments arranged by Mrs. Rounds have given a special touch to many events at Norton High School. As a department chairperson, she brought such innovations as a Child Care Program and Dew Drop Inn to the school. Her dedication and talents will be sorely missed — especially when it is time for those delicious holiday buffets! These three individuals leave to begin new lives in retirement as we, members of the Class of 1988, also leave to begin new lives. On behalf of the thousands of students they have served, we extend our best wishes for very happy retirements as we leave Norton High School to commence our new lives along with them. 183 i
