mmm pmuc imzm NOKTON. MASS. Q GB At the medieval castle a celebration is in the making; excitement stirs the air. The vassals work hard to prepare the grounds for the festivities. The bishops don their ceremonial garb. The knights return triumphantly from bat- tle, their swords held high in victory. Trumpets ire as lords, ladies, and noblemen arrive from all over the kingdom to join in the banquet. mMSm leval peo- ple, we, too have come together from miles around to work hard, and, finally, to join in the celebration of Norton High School. £uil s Dedication Mr. Lawrence Larocque may not be the most visible of teachers in the classrooms of Norton High School, but he is certainly visible to everyone who attends sports events at Nor- ton High School. Through the years he has earned affection and respect from Norton athletes and fans as well as from tf students in his classes. The devotion to and enthusiasm for job as physical education instructor, varsity football coach, anc junior varsity basketball coach are something we all admire, his various positions, Mr. Larocque teaches students more tr how to play the game; he teaches students how to play wit class, maturity and honesty. Most of all, he emphasizes the main reason for athletics — to have fun. For these reasons, many more, we, the class of 1986, wish to dedicate Sojourn to Mr. Lawrence Larocque as the person who has done so ven much for Norton High School in our years of attendance. J 14 Appreciation MRS. JANICE BACKLUND, MR. GEORGE DeVALK MRS. EILEEN KIESER, MR. JOHN KIESER, MRS. EDNA PHILLIPS Does anyone have his dues? Is anyone going to the Prom Committee meeting today? Would ANYONE like to help decorate for the dance? Get organized!!! How often have we heard these pleas during the past four years. During this time, our advisors have not only been extremely patient with us, but also willing to give us advice and go to any length to ensure that our stay at Norton High School was both successful and enjoyable. Their advice and encouragement made possible the Junior Senior Prom, Tender Years, the spaghetti supper, the senior picnic, the class trip, and many other fun events. For all their hard work and dedication, we proudly acknowledge the advisors of the Class of 1986. Dr. Maurice J. Splaine Superintendent of Schools Mr. Daniel F. Wheeler Principal ■hi Mr. Philip R. In that brief time, he brightened the days of students and faculty alike. He was always there with a smile and good word for everyone. Although the class of 1986 misses Robert deeply, we know that he will be on the stage, in spirit graduating with us as we always remember him with such happy memories. In Hardwood Groves Memories I look at pictures, Now and Then of you and I, way back when When time to us was so precious and new Brother and sister, me and you. The pictures are memories that we shared, The Tender moments when we showed we cared. You made me laugh, you made me cry. You helped me with things to get me by I remember the talent that you had. I remember the things that made you mad. I remember how you drew, your hand would just glide I remember how, so very much, you loved to ride. I remember these things like they were yesterday. Though the time is so distant, so far away. It seems all I ' ve got is memories I ' d never part with ones such as these Though it seems we ' re so far apart, From now ' Till forever, you ' ll be in my heart. — Becky Beard The same leaves over and over again! They fall from giving shade above To make one texture of faded brown And fit the earth like a leather glove. Before the leaves can mount again To fill the trees with another shade, They must go down past things coming up, They must go down into the dark decayed. They must be pierced by flowers and put Beneath the feet of dancing flowers. However it is in some other world I know that this is the way in ours. — Robert Frost Nothing Gold Can Stay Nature ' s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf ' s a flower- But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sand to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. — Robert Frost WHAT OF TIME? What of time? Wh at have we done? What of days spent in the sun? Where are those years That have so quickly flown by? Where does the sun go when it falls from the sky? Springs of hope Summers so rare Autumns of change, winters of despair. Today the sun sets The night air grows colder In the short time we ' ve been here, we ' ve grown so much older. But of memories, for now Enough has been said The world is waiting — full speed ahead! Hurled into the future From out of the past The game is now on, the die is now cast. We ' ve set our sights on tomorrow We ' re sure to find success We ' ll fight our way to the top and won ' t be pleased with less, We ' ve overcome the challenges That fate, thus far, has hurled Tonight we share this victory, tomorrow we take on the world. — Nate Brown and John Shaw $$$$ 4 $dtdb$ $dlf $ I §uperlattu£s 1. The fall of 1985 was another successful season for the Norton Lancer Marching Band under the guidance of Mr. William MacMullen. Led by Senior Drum Majors Christal Kmetz and John Shaw, flag captain Chris Fortes, rifle captain Darlene Moynihan, and majorette captain Karen Eno, the band per- formed at nearly every football game as well as at many other Marching Band events. Such events in- cluded a parade at the Big E in Springfield in early September, field competitions in Somerset and Easton in October, and the Quincy Christmas Parade in December. The band won three trophies at Quincy (Music — 3rd, Majorettes — 1st, and Feature Twirler Karen Eno — 1st) and came in third overall in their division. Songs performed in this year ' s show included the opening Also Sprach Zarathustra, the upbeat television theme from Remington Steele, the slower-paced You ' re the Inspiration, and the climactic Firedance. 90 Band — (Row 1) Thersa Grieve, Tanya Tripolone, Christal Kmetz (Drum Major), John Shaw (Drum Major). At the close of the fall season, the Band put away their marching instruments and brought out the con- cert instruments — planning for concerts at Christmas and in the Spring. This year, the chorus, directed by Mr. William MacMullen, was very small. However, it proved itself to be able to perform such complex numbers as A Celebration of Carols and the spirited Mistletoe Calypso at the Christmas concert. After the Christmas concert, Mr. MacMullen and the officers Chorus — (Sitting) Christine Haywood. (Row 1) Susan Schneider, Melanie Pcolka, Michelle LeRoy, Joanne Huber, Kathy Portanova, Rene Brower, Valerie Milosh, May Williams, Dayle Mann, Roberta Bassett, Christa Briggs, Kim Mclntyre, Holli Fitzgerald. (Row 2) Jimmy Farell, Jimmy Franco, Lisa Echevarria, Sara Smith. began planning for the chorus exchange concert in the spring. After auditioning for the Southeast Massachusetts District Chorus, Sara Smith and Lisa Echevarria were accepted. Also, Sara proceeded to compete for the All-State Chorus. The chorus performed in the Variety Show and in its annual Spring Concert. Thus, it has been an all- around exciting year for the chorus and its members. 91 Christmas Concert On a Wednesday evening, December 18, 1985, the Band and Chorus held their annual Christmas Concert in the school ' s auditorium. The Chorus opened the program, singing songs including Noel, Noel and A Celebration of Carols, as well as Coventry Carol, a duet sung by Lisa Echevarria and Sara Smith. The Band entered next, performing many pieces including the haunting Prelude and Fugue in D Minor and the spirited Sleighride. At the end of the evening, the audience joined the two groups in singing Christmas Carols as Drum Majors John Shaw and Christal Kmetz conducted. 92 homecoming This year ' s Homecoming was a great success. The annual Homecoming pep rally was held at night for the first time. It was followed by the traditional dance. The next day students and faculty gathered for the game and trie announcing of the queen and her court. This year ' s Queen and court were: Queen: Stacey Cotton, Senior Court: Conine Bennett, Karen Eno, Stacey Hays, and Cheri Precourt, Junior Court: Leah Scorro and Donna Hard- ing; Sophomore Court: Denise Harding and Tracey Powers; Freshman Court: Andrea Myers and Jennifer Barac. The Homecoming game was against Southeastern, this year. The Lancer football team took an impressive 31-8 victory over a strong Southeastern team. The Lancers were supported by the Cheerleaders, band, colorguard, majorettes and rifles, as always. Prom On May 3rd, 1985, Norton High School held its long awaited Junior-Senior Prom. The Junior Class Officers along with the prom Committee provided the special touches, that resulted in a spec- tacular prom night. The loveliness of the Canoe Club captured everyone ' s spirit along with Baby Grand ' s performance of the theme Tender Years. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the queen Linda Hyora and her king Peter Kelley. The queen ' s court consisted of Seniors: Kim Dunlap, Jennifer Green, Wanda Green, and Debbie Zaccardi. Juniors: Liga Berzins, Michelle Brooks, Stacey Cotton, and Ashley Mims. 97 emt-fFormal This year the National Honor Society hosted its second annual Semi-Formal on January 18, 1986. The beautiful setting of Wheaton College, along with the band Starlite, made for an excellent even- ing of dinner and dancing. The White Rose Princess was Stacey Cot- ton. Her Court consisted of Diane Bartley, Karen Bryant, Kari Dawson, Kim Lavoie, Candy Pike, and Kelly Webb. 99 §pagljettt iupper The Annual Spaghetti Supper is an enjoyable and profitable activity for the Senior Class. The Div. 5 state Champs owe the majority of their success to the outstanding per- formances which all 20 Senior members gave throughout the season. Through the leadership of Senior Co- Captains Stephen Peck and Greg Crum the 1985 Lancers flourished into a team full of dedication and teamwork. The outcome of this work and success tremendously encouraged atmosphere of spirit both within the school and throughout the community. This support guided the Lancers along their path to destiny; a trip to Nickerson field on Norton Lancer Day on December 7, 1985. Although a majority of the team was made up of Seniors, the athletic ability and desire which the underclassmen have demonstrated, have and will add up to another Super year in ' 86. This feat enabled the Lancers to participate in Post- Season play in the Division V Superbowl, on Boston University ' s, Nickerson Field. The game proved to be one of the hardest hitting games in Norton ' s history. The first half would have been an even battle if it weren ' t for an in- terception which was taken in for a touchdown. Lancers led 6-0 in the half. In the second half Dorchester took the lead at 14-7, and things looked dim for the Lancers. But the spirit of the 3,000 plus fans, managed to spark the Lancers ' spirit and they fought with endless determina- tion. Soon the Lancers were taking control and took the lead for good. Dorchester came back with one touchdown, but it wasn ' t enough, the Lancers won 25-20 and became the State Division V Champions. 107 I Varsity: (Front Row, Left to Right) capts. At the close of the season, the team participated in the Mayflower League Playoffs, in which it defeated Tri-County Regional and Old- Colony High, to gain the Playoff Champion- ship Trophy. Senior Captains Stacey Cotton and Denise LaPierre led the team in spiking and setting respectively. Stacey, Denise, and Michelle Laramee were also chosen to the All Star Team. The suc- cess of the Golf team is unmatched with 6 consecutive titles and 7 titles in the last 8 seasons. The team also participated in the League Medal Tournament, which it also won. The team received great help from Andy Martin and Barry Walsh, both Mayflower League All-Stars. The prospects for the 1986 season are ex- cellent with only one senior leaving. The hard work and winless struggle of last year paid off for the team this year, finishing with 5 wins, 4 losses, and 3 ties. With eight out of eleven returning players, and with the addition of new strength from juniors Leah Socorro and Donna Harding, the team was able to coordinate both a strong offense and an out- standing defense. Returning veterans, juniors Candy Mann and Judy Beatrice led the offense in scoring and assists, halfbacks Regina Courchine, a returning junior, and Jill Kressley, a senior co-captain, stopped the opponent ' s attacks with their great defensive skills and quickness. Lynne Harlow, also a senior co-captain, contributed to the defense as a fullback. Senior co-captain Jim Bisazza, a three-year var- sity member, continued to display remarkable skill and composure in the goal, stopping numerous attacks and shots this season. Players elected to the Mayflower League All-Stars were Senior Jill Kressley and Junior Regina Courchine. 112 — r The Norton High School Cheerleaders have had an exciting year under the leadership of Mrs. Diane Santoro. The year started with Cheerleading Camp at Bridgewater State Col- lege. While attending camp the girls received five third place ribbons and a third place plaque for their cheers and a First Place for their pom-pon routine to Old Time Rock and Roll. One of the biggest events the Varsity Cheerleaders participated in this year was cheer- ing Norton ' s Football team on to victory in the Division 5 Super Bowl. This was a great ex- perience for all members of the squad and one they ' ll probably never forget. After cheering for football the cheerleaders moved on to basketball which was also very rewarding. Following basketball was a competi- tion for the Mayflower League championship. glasketball : Varsity — (Standing, L to R) Scott Dunlap, Derek Bouchard-Hall, John Dunlap, David Barac, Jim Sicard, Coach Kelley. The boys lost several close games to teams in their league, as well as an out-of-league loss to Mansfield. The team did receive great help from leading scorer and League All-Star Greg Watson, and second highest scorer, Walter Ambrose. Great all-around effort was given by Peter Smith, Eric Paine, and Jimmy Sicard. Although the boys did not have an exceptional season, they played well, giv- ing Coach Kelley reason to be very optimistic about the prospects for the next year. The team will only lose two seniors, and Coach Kelley feels that younger players will come in and fill key positions. 116 Varsity — (Standing, L to R) Lara Shaw, Kathy Kmetz, Cara Jor- dan, Robin Wallace, Terri Lombard, Karen Waite, Donaa Hard- ing, Pam Hansen, Coach Mr. Nuttall. The team started the season with a Jamboree, par- ticipated in a Christmas Tournament midway through the season, and finished off the season with League games. The team received great help from Capt. Stacey Cotton, a league All-Star, who led the team in both scoring and rebounding. Capt. Christal Kmetz also played a major role as she led the team in assists and free throw percentages, while Terri Lombard, Cara Jordan, and Pam Hansen gave strong all- around effort throughout the season. Dayle Mann, Alicia Sim- mions, Captain Kathy Bassett, Captain Jill Kressley, Captain Debbie Zaccardi, Chris Star- rett, Michele Maclntyre. (Third Row, L. to R.) Coach Mr. Holster, Rachel Pcolka, Tammi Girelli, Erin O ' Shea, Denise Harding, Lara Shaw, Karen Waite, Kelly O ' Shea. Despite great efforts from all the girls, the girls ' track team suffered a winless record in the 1985 spring season in the Mayflower League. Last year was a building year for the girls ' track team. The team was very young, consisting primarily of freshmen and sophomores. The only upperclassmen were seniors Kathy Basset and Debbie Zacardi and junior Jill Kressley; these three were also tri-captains for the year. Last year ' s winners of awards were Tammi Girelli, most improved player and Jill Kressley, the most valuable player. The ' 86 season should be very strong with many returning members. Juniors Tammi Girelli, Erin O ' shea, Kelly O ' Shea, and Sherri Braley will be return- ing strengths in the sprints. Senior Jill Kressley and sophomore Kelly Lynch will be returning strengths in the quarter mile. Junior Karen Waite and sophomore Kim Mueller will be returning strengths in the long distance races. 9 121 (First Row, L. to R.) Paul Macken, Mark LaPierre, James Franco, Jeff Zaccardi. (Second Row, L to R) Carmin Iadonisi, Regino Cantu, Jonathan Goldman, Nate Brown, Capt. Robert Bouchard-Hall, Coacah Robert Maher. The boys ' tennis team had its best-ever season in 1985 under the coaching of Mr. Robert Maher. The boys were undefeated in the league (9-0), and were successful in capturing the League title. Outstanding players included Robert Bouchard-Hall who was undefeated in 1st singles, and Carmin Iadonisi and Paul Macken who were unbeaten in 1st doubles. Captain Robert Bouchard-Hall received the M.V.P. Award and J.F.K. Award, while Jonathan Goldman received the M.I.P, Award. Nikki Wanikpun, Carmin, Robert, Paul, and Jonathan were also chosen to the League All-Star Team. The prospects for the 1986 season are promising with most of the players returning. 36 A 122 1 (girls ' Stetmis (Left to Right, Standing) Coach Mrs. Forrester, Kristen Rodrigues, Kim Rob- bins, Alka Popat, Priscilla Mansfield, Carolyn Jordan, Nicole Maher, Marleen Cookson. (Kneeling) Allison Rubin, Kristen Holmes. Although the 1985 Girls ' Tennis Team was young and lacked experience, they showed tremendous effort throughout the season, finishing with a record of 8-9 overall. While all the members of the team played well, sophomore Kim Robbins was among those selected to the Mayflower League All-Star team. Since all members will be returning, the stronger, 1986 team will be raring to go with more experience and greater ability. Among those expected to make a major contribution to the team ' s success are seniors Kristen Holmes and Allison Rubin. tm m 123 } 22 i laAt ' l ' i laACI . laAff Vars fy — (First Row, L. to R.) (1 The Boy ' s Baseball team once again had A SUPERB season under the coaching of Dave Mollica. The boys went on to win 16 games and lose only seven with the help of outstanding players such as Cap- tains Steve Peck and Frank Teixeria. Both Frank and Steve were chosen to the League All-Stars, along with John Finch and Larry Iadonisi. The team captured its 8th Mayflower League title, its 9th Playoff Cham- pionship, as they reached the Eastern Mass. Semi-Finals in the State Tournament. With the help of dedicated fans like Mr. Woodason, the team had another excellent season. With only two seniors graduating, the team should be a powerhouse this year under the Captainship of Steve Peck and John Finch. 124 T §oftball The Girls ' softball team had a very suc- cessful ' 85 season under the leadership of Coach Chambers. Ending the season with a 9 win and 5 loss record, the team qualified for the State Tournament. Pitcher Mary Lombardo, shortstop Denise La Pierre, and catcher Stacey Cotton helped lead the team to victory. Captain Stacey Cotton was also voted to the League All-Stars. The team received great help from Tasha Greene, Michelle Laramee both infielders, and Judy Beatrice, the strength in the out- field. With the help from dedicated fans like Mike Cronin, the team had an excellent season. Coach Chambers is hoping for the best season yet in ' 86 as all the players will be returning. (First Row, L. to R.) Martha Kennelly, Lisa Ledoux, Mary Lombardo, Captain Stacey Cotton, Tasha Greene, Captain Denise LaPierre. (Second Row, L. to R.) Michelle Laramee, Judy Beatrice, Kathy Kmetz, Lynn Cronin, Michelle Hut- chinson, Coach Chambers. 126 We Are the Champions . . . Norton High School is proud of its sports teams which have won six League Championships and one State Division V Championship in the 1985-86 seasons. In the spring of 1985 the boys ' track team went undefeated for the first time while winning the Mayflower League Championship. Also in the spring of 1985, the boys ' tennis team captured a League Championship. In fall sports, both the volleyball and golf teams won their League Titles. Finally, for the first time ever, the Norton High School foot- ball team, Mayflower League Cham- pions, qualified for the Division V Super Bowl. By defeating Dorchester in an ex- citing 25-20 victory, Norton won the Division V Eastern State Championship. Both the school and community are pro- ud of these championship teams and of all Norton High School athletes. 127 t 1 Wally Ambrose Football, Basketball, Track 2. Corrine Bennett Cheerleading 3.
