j j OM PUBUC UBRABT NORTON PUBLIC LibKArtV WDRTQN, MAia 02766 1. Norton High School Norton Massachusetts Mrs. Beatrice Smith has been with our class since our very first day of freshman year. That first, frightening year, she helped us plan a successful Farewell Dance, and prepared us to enter sophomore year at full steam. Her never-ending supply of time, patience, and enthusiasm helped to make our prom one of the most outstanding in Norton High School history. Senior year, she has helped us plan our highly successful Welcome Dance, Spaghetti Supper, West Point Rock Band concert, and all the many other senior events. It is for these and many other reasons that we wish to dedicate Sojourn ' 85 to her. In addition to Mrs. Smith, there are many other faculty members who have contributed much of their time and talent to help our class. We would like to take this oppor- tunity to show our appreciation to them. Without their support, such events as the prom, the ham and bean supper, fundraisers, and dances could not have taken place, nor been as successful. Mr. Fred Bartek . . . A.P. . . . D.B.Q. ' s . . . We dared to be different; we caused quite a stir, To us in the future tiney ' li often refer. Our freshman year, the trumpets blared, ' ' Hello Dolly through the halls could be heard. A special greeting meant just for us. We savored each moment, success was a must. Our Sophomore year, the band played ' ' Celebration, We took it to heart, though it caused consternation. Our advisors stood by very proudly with us. Our motto became, Be a junior or bust. Our junior year was a Fantasy, Toward Senior year we looked with glee. Our rings on our fingers, our prom a success, We knew without saying that we were the best. Our Senior year, the A-Team ruled, To show our true spirit to all of the school. Determined again to prove our success. Our class came together, above all the rest. With hard work and pride, we came from behind. And then settled back for the Senior year grind. And although we were different from all of the rest. The class of 85 was surely the best. Tracy O ' Connor! Freshman year . . . Harlow. 2nd Row: T. Hill, T. Lombard. 3rd Row: L. Echevarria, K. Dunlap. The Student Council got a lot accomplished this year. Led by Mr. Gorman and officers Sandra Fer- rini (pres.), Julie Brown (v. -pres.), Kim Dunlap (sec), and Mia Sicard (treas ), they sponsored stu- dent suggestion boxes, the Homecoming Dance, the Great American Smokeout, and the Santa Fund. Although these activities are very important to the Student Council, their most important ac- tivity is to have a say on whatever major actions are taken by the School Committee. The Student Advisory Committee is an impor- tant branch of student government, for its members represent the student body in relations with the School Committee. Members are al- lowed to make suggestions to the School Com- mittee, which then takes the suggestions under consideration. The Regional Advisory Committee attends monthly meetings with representatives from other area schools in order to discuss mat- ters important to school government. By attend- ing the meetings, the members learn valuable in- formation which is especially important to the Stu- dent Council. 1 BAND OFFICERS - President, Carmin ladonisi; Vice President, Terri Lombard; and Secretary, Debbie Zaccardi had a very successful year They helped to plan fundraisers, competitions, and other important band events The band ' s managers. Donna Harding and Karen Ingalls (uniforms), John Dunlap (equipment), and Robert Chancey (publicity), and librarians Stephanie Phillips and Robin Wallace, were also great assets to the band. Not only did they help organize the band events, but they also kept the uniforms, equipment, and music in order. As a group, the officers, managers, and librarians maintained the interest and enthusiasm of the band. BAND OFFICERS - L to R, 1st Row: C. ladonisi, T. Lombard, ). Dunlap, J. Doyle. 2nd Row: R. For their second time, the duo led the band with a touch of class not only in halftime shows, but in parades and competitions as well. They ran very efficient practices this year and inspired band members to do their best. The band greatly appreciates their help, and respects them a grat de al. Drum Majors: C Kmetz, |. Shaw. The band captains are greatly ad- mired and respected by their squads. Theresa Casasa, in her final year at Nor- ton High, kept the colorguard looking sharp all season. Beth Wagner made sure that the rifles were in unison, and Karen Eno brought out the best in the majorettes. The captains led their respective squads to another suc- cessful season this year. 1st Row: B. Wagner, T. Casassa. 2nd Row: K Eno The Rifles, Colorguard, and Majorettes are the auxiliary squads to the marching band. They are just as important as the band itself, for they add a choreographic dimension to the music played by the band. They not only practice with the band, but also spend extra time at their own practices in order to perfect their routines Besides performing with the band at the Saturday games, parades, and competitions during the year, they also perform at special events such as the Variety Show and get the crowds going at pep rallies. The Norton High School Band had another great season this year Although smaller this year, the band played with great enthusiasm, marched sharply, and sounded fantastic. Under the direction of Mr. William Macmullen and Ms Donna Hunter the band delighted crowds at both home and away football games with four enjoyable selections: A-Team, Over the Rainbow, Costa Del Sol, and Fandango. The band also became involved in three competitive events this year. The band started off the season at the Pawtacket Octoberfest Parade. Their next stop was the Somerset Field Show Competition and Parade. At the Quincy Christmas Parade, the band did an outstanding job, placing 6th out of 17 bands for an overall rating, 3rd for musical effect, and 2nd for feature majorette twirler. Special events for the band this year were the annual Veteran ' s Day Parade in Norton and the Norton-Wheaton Community Day The Norton-Wheaton Community Day was extra special because it marked the 150th year that Wheaton College has been in existence. The band would like to thank Ms. Ruthann Scaringi and Mrs Linda Peffer for their help during our practices as well as the Norton Band Parents for their neverending support. 85 The Stage Band is a group of musicians who perform popular, jazz, and rock songs at school concerts and at special events such as the Variety Show Most members of the stage band are also members of the marching and concert bands Presently the stage band has trumpets, trcjmbones, drums, saxophones, electric guitars, and an electronic syn- thesizer. Maniac, Say Say Say, True, and Spice of Life are some of the popular numbers played by the Stage Band. STAGE BAND - L to R, Sitting: R. Wallace, D LaPierre, S Desfosses, D. Thatcher. Standing: K. The officers are Louise McKillop (Pres.), ' ' Alison Rubin (V- Pres.), and Lisa Echevar- ria (Sec). The librarians are Theresa Casassa, Michelle LeRoy, and May Williams. Not only does the chorus practice several times a week during school, but they also practice especially hard during the last few weeks before the Christmas Concert, the Variety Show, and the Spring Concert. The Variety Show is especial- ly important to several members of the chorus, for they can compete in the show as soloists. They devote their study hall time for various tasks such as writing office passes for students, distributing bulletins and attendance lists, and collecting attendance sheets from teachers in the morning. Norton High and the secretaries at the front office are fortunate to have such a dedicate group of students. Guidance aides are gratly appreciated by Mrs. Church and the counselors they work for. They spend their study hall time doing a variety of jobs such as reworking people ' s schedules, filing documents, organizing college catalogues, typing and copying papers, and making appointments for students. Their work helps make the guidance office a more efficient place. English aides are indispensible to the English teachers They help control the flood of papers that rush into the English department every day by correcting tests and quizzes, running errands, and typing and copying worksheets and quizzes. They do their best to help lighten the heavy burden of papers placed on the backs of the English teachers, and the English teachers are grateful for their help. Library aides plan an essential part in the smooth operation of the Norton High School Library. Among their many duties are helping people to find things in the library, resheiving books, making displays of new books, and even occa- sionally removing students who don ' t have library passes. They are a valuable asset to students and to the librarians. Science aides are very important to the science teachers and to the students in the science classes. Their tasks include typing and running off worksheets and quizzes, correcting tests, running errands, and cleaning and organizing laboratory equipment. These hard-working individuals allow the science teachers to have a little time to relax during their busy day and enough time to properly prepare special materials for use in the labs. They not only hold doors and direct hallway traffic, but are also on the lookout for any signs of trouble in their hall. Members of purple key are indispensi- ble to the smooth operation of the school. Without their services, the halls would be a confused stampede of students. Gym Aides are very important people as far as Miss Archibald and Miss Cardoza are concerned. Their purpose is to carry gym equipment out of and into the girls locker rooms Without their help, there would be less time for the other girls to participate in gym. They are greatly appreciated by the other girls in the classes. SPANISH CLUB - L to R, 1st Row: A. Rubin, S. Macomber, A. Cibbs. 2nd Row: ). Franco, S. Shambre, S. Nut- tall, L. Echevarria, S. With more than 30 members from all four classes, the staff works on various newspaper topics such as sports, entertainment, and features Next year, they hope to get more members and have six different publications. Editor-in- chief Ken Kalasinskyan and Mrs. Sweeney and Mrs. Rogers are in charge of the paper. The Spanish Club, also undedr the direction of Mrs. Sweeney, has about 15 members. They are involved with charitable events such as giving Christmas gifts to the elderly, cultural events such as going to Spanish movies, and fun events such as going out to eat at Spanish restaurants. Mrs. Robbins and officers Linda Hyora (pres.), Kathy Bassett (v-pres ),Debbie Zaccardi (sec), and Barbara Curran (treas.) planned five major activities for the society. They started off the year by selling balloons and Halloween candy In January, they held the White Rose Semi-Formal at Wheaton College In addition to these activities, each member had to complete a ser- vice project of his or her choice. They finally ended their busy year in May with the annual Spring Bike-a- thon All profits from their activities go towards the two scholarships given at the end of the year. The Math Team had a successful and enjoyable season this year Mrs Vital, the officers, Kathy Bassett (pres ), john Shaw (v -pres ), Robin Wallace (sec ), and Derek Bouchard-Hall (treas ), and the other members competed in the New England Mathematics League and the Southeastern Massachusetts Mathematics League The Members especially enjoyed competing against their toughest opponent and chief rival, Foxboro High School. Girls could be seen in elegant dresses and boys in special suits. A buffet style dinner was served and dancing followed in The Chase Round at Wheaton Col- lege. This was the first year a semi-formal had ever taken place at Norton High and those who attended won ' t soon forget it. m 2 O 1 i The annual Christmas Concert, held on December 19, 1984, was a great success. The dedication of Mr. MacMullen, the band, and the chorus, made it an exciting evening. New this year was a combined number with the chorus and band pro- viding a degree of variety to the concert. The concert ended with the audience join- ing the chorus in the singing of Christmas carols. The annual Band Banquet held on December 1, 1984, celebrated the end of the marching season for those people in Band, Color Guard and Majorettes. The theme of the banquet was Fandango, a song performed at football games each Saturday. Everyone attended a buffet dinner and then received awards of recognition such as year bars, perfect attendance pins, and letters. The handing out of trophies and Senior Band jackets filled the air with excitement. Following the awards ceremony was a dance for band members and their parents. The evening was a night for looking back at all the activities successfully and excellently performed. o 00 c m 101 I FOOTBALL - Bottom (left to right): P. Kelley, M 2nd Row: D. Shaw, G. Crum, S.
