NORTON PUBLIC LIBRARY MORTON, MASS 02 66 Norton High School Norton, Massachusetts SOJOURN 1984 1 Mrs. Karen Boucher has been a driving force in organizing class events and fundraisers. Her en- thusiastic approach to everything from algebra to the class picnic has helped to interest many students in both learning and school ac- tivities. As a class advisor, she has worked diligently on such events as the prom and the Spaghetti Supper. Her leadership and efforts to in- volve all members of the class in our activities has been an inspiration to us all, and . . . Throughout our years at Norton High School, Mr. Philip Gorman has upheld the strict code of discipline necessary in a public high school. In spite of this most difficult responsibility, he has remained close to the students and has earned not only our respect, but also our trust. As the advisor to Student Council, he has helped to promote involve- ment in student government; as a sports fanatic, he has been an ever-present spec- tator at our athletic events, and . . . Mrs. Elizabeth McKinley has been with our class from the very beginning. Her in- volvement in class activities and her encouragement in all our endeavors stem from a genuine concern about her students, both individually and as a class. Through her efforts, our class has organized many successful fundraisers and activities. She has helped to promote school spirit as well as education and has earned the respect and friendship of us all, and . . . fix? . . . .FOR ALL OF THIS AND SO MUCH MORE, WE WISH TO DEDICATE OUR YEARBOOK, SOJOURN ' 84, TO THESE THREE PEOPLE WHO HAVE GIVEN SO MUCH OF THEMSELVES TO NORTON HIGH SCHOOL. 4 6 10 DR. MAURICE J. SPLAINE, JR. While directing the Norton School System for many years. Dr. Splaine has exemplified leadership and responsibility. Although his duties prevent day to day contact with the students, his care and devotion to these students is evident in every aspect of Norton High School. He is truly One who breaks new paths into unfamiliar territory. MR. DANIEL F.WHEELER In his unending service to Norton High, Mr. Wheeler has devoted his time and energy to helping students understand the society in which they live. Lending a hand in all aspects of school business, Mr. Wheeler is a valued administrator who is highly respected by students and teachers alike, as One who implements noble ideals and principles with practical accomplishments. MR PHILIP R GORMAN For many years. Norton students have had the opportunity to receive support and aid from their vice-principal — Mr. Gorman. One can find Mr. Gorman just about anywhere, doing his best to improve the school he has helped build. His dedication to our school is unique, and he will never be forgotten for his ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency. 12 DONNA ARCHIBALD PATRICIA ARMSTRONG JOHN ATWOOD FREDRIC BARTEK Physical Education Computer Programmer Guidance Social Science, Chairman Health is not a condition of mat- Every mind was made for You must begin with an ideal A man ' s feet should be planted ter , but of mind growth, for knowledge. and end with an ideal in his country, but his eyes should survey the world. She enjoys her classes also, partly because a greater variety is offered here than is in her school. Her enthusiasm about our school is most obvious when she talks about her in- volvement in sports and the Senior Class Play: I . . . love activities . . . through these ... I have met several good friends and have worked hard to be part of a team. WEST GERMANY Ulrike Stephani Ulrike says that a lot of things are done differently here from the way they are done at her school in Hamburg, Germany. Here she has had the opportunity to choose all of her classes; in Germany, she does not. She particularly likes her English class here since there is emphasis on writing essays rather than just on learning grammar. She also has enjoyed the chance she has had to play sports — a chance she says she has not had in Germany. She expresses her thoughts in these areas succintly, I like the freedom. Both Patricia and Uli have expressed their thanks to the students and teachers at Norton for helping them when they had trouble, and for being understanding in every way that they could. They also would like to extend special thanks to their host families and to Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Gorman. Both students have said how much it means to them to graduate here with us. They should realize, however, that they are very special to us. They have brought something to Norton High School which we will not forget - their own continental views. By bringing their views, they have let us see Norton in a light we could not have seen it, and have expanded our horizons, making us more aware of other countries and cultures. The most impor- tant thing they have given to us, however, is their friendship. 34 1984 Our class advisors and officers have organized our class activities since September of our Freshman year. Although officers have changed since then, they have all done a fine job in leading our class through many successful fundraisers, from Current stationery our first year to NFL and Lancer litter baskets. Other successful activities include our Junior Prom held at the King Phillip Ballroom on May 6, 1983, the senior class picnic, the spaghetti sup- per, and the senior class play. The past officers who have been so dedicated are Presidents: Phil Sicard, Freshman year; Dana Kelley, Sophomore and Junior years; Vice Presidents: Ines Rutkovskis, Freshman and Sophomore years and Lori Kmetz, Junior year; Treasures: Paul Sigman, Freshman year, Laura Amirault Sophomore and Junior years; and Secretary Lisa Marchase for the three years. This year ' s officers are President Laura Amirault, Vice President Lori Kmetz, Treasurer Cathy Aftosmes, and Secretary Lisa Marchase. All the officers, past and present, acknowledge and appreciate the help and support of the advisors, Mrs. Russell, Mrs. McKinley, Mrs. Boucher, Mr. Dery, and Mr. Brassard. CATERINA I. CONTINUING TRADITIONS Led by Mr. Gorman and this year ' s officers Phillip Sicard (pres.), Brian )enney (v. -pres.), LesleyAnn Laidlaw (sec), and Sandra Ferrini (treas ), the Student Council is clearly blending the old with the new. The Student Council continues to sponsor suggestion boxes, the Homecoming Dance, and the Santa Fund. A new event for the Stu- dent Council is a conference the officers attend in the Spring. The Student Advisory Committee is the student body ' s voice to the School Committee. Members can make suggestions, such as a change in the ranking policy, which the School Committee then takes under consideration. The Regional Advisory Committee at- tends monthly meetings at which they discuss matters pertinent to school government with representatives from other schools in the area. In doing this, they hope to gain insights for our Student Council. 76 MATH TEAM — L. to R., 1st Row: R. Wallace, ). Shaw, K. Bassett, ). Bosh. 2nd Row: C. Dermody, M. Erlich, S. Bennett, N. The band, consisting of over eighty members, went on to become involved in the Pawtucket Octoberfest Parade In the Somerset Competition, the band was competing against bands of a higher class. Despite this however, our Norton High band put on an awesome performance. Similarly at the Veteran ' s Day Parade on November 12th, regardless of rainy weather, the Norton High band marched proudly. The band continued to lead Norton spirit with outstanding perfor- mances during both the Homecoming and Thanksgiving games. I IGH SCHOOL tfki ' ill !7 BAND — L. to R., 3rd Row: ). Allen, ). Smith, K. Led by captains Don Hansen and Ray Jackson, the Lancers nearly knocked off the league champs, Nantucket. Going into the final minutes, Norton had the lead, but lost it on a Nan- tucket touchdown pass, which clinched it for the Whalers. This did not discourage the Lancers, however; they went on to defeat Old Colony. Coaches Larry Larocque and Tom Ruest are looking forward to being contenders next year due to the return of almost the entire offensive line, assuring the Lancers of a powerful offensive attack. Senior participants were Ed Burgess, John Costa, Brian Crowley, Barry Dufresne, Scott Eberle, Darryl Elliott, Dave Hall, Don Hansen, Ray Jackson, and Jack Reilly. % f fYf 7 L2£L8W 7 5C- 5, First Row: S. It was forecast that 1983 would be the year that the Lancer Golf team ' s string of championships in the Mayflower League would come to an end. Norton had won four of the five previous titles. However, heavy graduation losses were expected to prevent the Lancers from repeating as cham- pions. Only senior and captain Bob DiCesare was returning from the 1982 squad. Much to the delight of Coach Nuttall and the dismay of Mayflower League op- ponents, a talented group of underclassmen picked up where their predecessors left off and posted a sparkling 10 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie record which gave Norton a share of the league title with a much more experienced squad from West Bridgewater. Norton ' s fourth successive championship was also its fifth in the past six years. 93 The 1983 field hockey team began the season with high hopes. Eight returning starters and an abundance or talent seemed likely to form a win- ning team. Unfortunately the pieces never seemed to fall into place, and it was a season of ups and downs. Led by captains Sue Darling, Dana Kelley, and Ines Rutkovskis, the team played many close and exciting games, causing much anguish for coach, Cathy Chambers. Jim Bisazza, the first boy to play hockey at Norton, was an intimidating force in the goal and with the help of what Coach Chambers calls the best defense in the league, he stopped many shots on goal. Cap- tain Steve Medeiros, the only senior, Jeff Chaplin, Robert Turner, Andy Turner, and John Shaw performed well throughout the season and were all letter winners. Coach Bob Rutkstalis is looking forward to next year, as he was very pleased with the progress of the underclassmen. 95 I LEAGUE CHAMPS! The 1983 volleyball team had the most suc- cessful season in Norton ' s Volleyball history. A record of 15-1 earned Norton the Mayflower League championship and qualified the team for the state tournament, where they defeated Jamaica Plain High School, but fell to Archbishop Williams High and Bishop Feehan. It was a season of excellence, dedication, and unselfish team play, during which the team, led by captains Michele Stefanelli and Joelle Webb, won 31 games and lost only 5. The Lancers defeated Bristol-Plymouth, the defending champs 4-0, and as League champs, hosted the all-star match in a best-of-five game series. Seniors Amy Prewan- dowski; setter, and Michelle Murphy; first server, who served a perfect game (15-0) against Tri- County, were selected to the all-star team. Other senior participants were spiker Joelle Webb, and hitters Sue Beaton, Tammy Johnson, Michele Stefanelli, and Brenda Vinson. Standing: T. Johnson, B. Vinson, M. Murphy, S. Beaton, J. Brown, S. The team played many heart-stopping games, often winning or losing by just a few points. The highlight of the season was a home game against archrival and undefeated Apponequet. A pep ral- ly preceeded the big game, which was broadcast on cable television, and a near-capacity crowd, the largest in years, gathered for the confrontation. Unfortunately, Norton bowed to the Lakers in an exciting 4 point game. Captains and league all-stars Don Hansen and Steve Boyer, both seniors, were over-all high scorers, and Boyer led the team in rebounding. Seniors Barry Dufresne, Ray lackson, Scott Nevius, and Brian Sullivan also contributed to the team ' s success. Standing: P. Kelley, C. Watson, A. Larson, M. Perez, R. Allen, F. Texeria. Kneeling: S. The Lancers main- tained the success of recent years by finishing third in the Mayflower League. The team was led in scor- ing by captains Kathy Hansen and Stacey Woodason, and in rebounding by captain Ines Rutkovskis. Strong defensive efforts were made by Michelle Murphy, Stacey Cotton, and Jill Kressley. It is noteworthy that the team ' s success was due to its ability to overcome the twin handicaps of in- experience and lac k of size. Despite these disad- vantages, the Lancers established themselves as a strong contender in the Mayflower League. Senior participants were Mary Aucoin, Tammy Johnson, Michelle Murphy, Ines Rutkovskis, Joelle Webb, and Stacey Woodason.  ft Standing: C. Kmetz, S. Cotton, ). Kressley, ). Though the cheerleaders were not directly involved in sports, the 1983-84 squad encouraged school spirit, psyched up crowds at games, and sup- ported the teams through wins and losses. The varsity and j.v. squads were present at all football and basketball games, and the newly established com- petition squad enrolled in two spring competitions. Finishing with a record of 11 wins and 4 losses, which qualified the team for the state tournament, the Lancers came within an eyelash of beating defending champs and archrival Apponequet, who won by one run scored in the last inning. A strong infield boosted the Lancer ' s success. Pitcher and all-star Amy Prewandowski was backed by all-star Melissa Hoyle at first base, Kathy Hansen at second base, all-star Michelle Murphy at third base, shortstop Tonya Jackson, and all-star Diane Ellard behind the plate. Tammy Johnson, Stacey Cotton, and Denise LaPierre made up the outfield. Pam LaRosee, Christal Kmetz, Terri Lombard, and Mary Lombardo, also made key contributions. Despite heavy graduation losses, the 1983 girls ' track team was one of the most successful, finishing with a record of 8-2. Led by captains Pam Coolidge, Sandy Keene, and Laura Ruta, the Lancers annihilated the competition at the first Mayflower League girls ' track meet. Led by captains Ray Jackson, Paul Medeiros, and Peter Shaw, the team members were able to develop skills, but injuries plagued the Lancers and prevented some wins. Peter Shaw was chosen as most valuab le player, and Darrell Spencer as most improved. Coach Bob Rukstalis is hoping for a more successful season this spring. Petra Niewind, an ex- change student from Germany, and Robin Morse were chosen for the league all-star team. Prospects for 1984 are bright as several squad members return. Among those ex- pected to make a major contribution to the team ' s success are seniors Kelly Bren- nan, MargOt Mims, Robin Morse, and K. Brennan, M. Brooks, L. Berzins, P. Niewand, C. Pike, R. Norton finished in a second place tie in the Mayflower League, with a record of 4- 4. Dan Goldman was the most valuable player with a record of 9 wins and 3 losses. He and Terry LaPierre were named to the league all-star team. Returning lettermen Steve Urbanus and Robert Bouchard-Hall will provide the expertise for this year ' s team. Catcher Steve Bryant, the team ' s most valuable player, second baseman Keith Broyles, most improved, third baseman Bill White, pitcher John Costa, and first baseman Don Hansen were chosen for the league all- star team. Despite graduation losses, Coach Dave Mollica is looking forward to what will hopefully be his seventh league-winning season. BASEBALL VARSITY — Standing: Coach D Mollica, B. The athletes at Nor- ton High have been blessed with many dedicated coaches who are concerned not only with winning, but with good sportsmanship and comraderie. It is because of their dedication year after year to athletics and athletes, and to our school itself, that the Norton Lancers have become respected contenders both in the Mayflower League and in the Attleboro area. For this dedication, we are truly grateful. ttmX- It 110 There are various awards which are given annually at Norton High School. Different criteria are required for different awards, but all of these awards bestow honor upon those who receive them. This year ' s winner of the D.A.R. Award is Laura Amirault. She cer- tainly fulfills the criteria of dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism: she is president of the Senior class and the National Honor Society, she is a co-editor of the yearbook. Brian jenney is the winner of the Jewish War Veteran ' s Award this year. Brian ' s achievements exemplify the key characteristic for the award: human achievement. Brian is Student Council Vice-president, president of the Band, and is involved with many branches of scouting. The Voice of Democracy contest is a national speech contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.). This year ' s local winners, who spoke on the topic My Role in Upholding the Constitution are Kathy Bassett (first place), Barbara Curran (second place), and Joe Limber (third place). GIRLS ' STATE Nidia Gamboa Often regional or state awards are given to students of Norton High School, but this year is even more spectacular, since we also have a winner of a national honor. Each year Norton High School students are chosen to Boys ' State, and for the last few years, a student has been chosen for Girls ' State. The Boys ' State delegates from our class were Donny Hansen, Charles McDonald, Christian Perez, and Mark White; alternates were Bob Piatt and Phil Sicard; Nidia Gamboa was the Girls ' State delegate Donny was not able to attend last Spring ' s convention because he was playing in the baseball playoffs, so Phil went in his place. The students who did at- tend went to law and government awareness programs, one of which was taught by Boston Mayoral candidate Larry DiCara. This year a great honor has been bestowed on Norton High School: Brian Sullivan, a four year member of our band and a member of last year ' s Massachusetts All-State Band, was chosen to the McDonald ' s All-American Band As a member of the band, he played in the Macy ' s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, in the Rose Bowl Parade on New Year ' s Day in Pasadena, Califor- nia, and in many other prestigious engagements. Obviously, this is a great ac- complishment; Brian describes it as awesome — but it is not only an enjoyable experience for him, it is one which will help him to excel in his future endeavours. MCDONALD ' S ALL-AMERICAN BAND Brian Sullivan WINTER CONCERT - DECEMBER 21, 1983 The annual Christmas Concert was held on December 21, 1983, and was once again a success due to the hard work and effort of Mr. MacMullen, the Band, and the Chorus. The two vocal solos by Michelle Murphy and Denise Dion made their talent evident and warmed the hearts of all in atten- dance. The Band kept a lively pace and together with the Chorus made an enjoyable evening for all. The concert ended with the audience joining the chorus in the singing of four favorite Christmas Carols. This year ' s National Honor Society Induction was traditional in many ways but introduced a change to the process. Inductees were tapped in homeroom and attended a reception in the library during first period. Parents, faculty, and friends then at- tended the induction which was held that evening, February 8th at 7:30 P.M. and helped to make it a special occasion. Reverend Burditt first gave the invocation, Dr. Splaine, Mr Wheeler, and Society President Laura Amirault extended their greetings. Jen- nifer Roberts, the guest speaker, added a touch of humor to the ceremony, helping also to make it enjoyable. Then Society members expressed their feelings about the criteria for induc- tion: Margot Mims talked about character; Melissa Wender, scholarship; Lesleyann Laidlaw, leadership; and Susan Sorel, ser- vice. Finally inductees are: SENIORS — Dana Kelley, Lori Kmetz, Christian Perez, and Lynne Selley; IUNIORS — Theresa Cassassa, Patti Coolidge, Laurie Pane, and Marcus Perez, and SOPHOMORES - Nate Brown, Christal Kmetz, )ill Kressley, Terri Lombard, John Shaw, and Sarah Smith. A reception followed in the cafeteria. N.H.S. INDUCTION — FEBRUARY 8, 1984 115 JUST YOU AND I Many weeks were spent in anxious anticipation as the date of our prom approached Girls shopped for gowns and shoes and made appointments; guys ordered tuxes and flowers The prom commit- tee and the junior class officers and advisors made the final prepara- tions; class president Dana Kelly prepared her welcome speech, and all who were involved hoped everything would go well. Finally May 6, 1983 arrived. The school office was mobbed at 9:15 a.m. as students who were attending the prom (and some who weren ' t) waited in line to sign out. Soon-to-be debutantes and their escorts poured out of the school, some with errands to run, others planning to spend the afternoon sleeping in the sun. 116 MAY 6, 1983 Prom Night! People arrived at the King Philip Ballroom in Wren- tham, all dolled up in everything from beat-up cars to chauffeured limousines Pictures were taken and everyone ' s table manners came out of hiding when dinner was served Then some danced the night away to music by Sight, while others strolled on the patio beneath a starry sky. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Queen Lisa Murphy and King David Meyers, with Lynda Bartlev. lanet Foster. Sharon )ones, Krissy Precourt, Lori Bileau, Paula Morris Christina Pike, Ines Rutkovskis as members of the court They danced to the theme song lust You and I , and thus ended the social event ol the season, a night none of us who attended will ever forget HOMECOMING WEEK This year ' s Homecoming was more ot an event than it ever has been. Nearly everyone was involved in the week ' s activities, par- ticularly in decorating halls for Thursday ' s contest. Other events in- cluded Monday — 50 ' s day, Tuesday — Hat, glasses, and pins day, Wednesday — Punk day , and Thursday, the day of the pep rally — Purple White and Balloon day The week was a success with the court named at the Pep Ral- ly: Leah Socorro, Donna Harding, Kristen Brennan, Sherry Precourt, Sandi rerrani, Debbie Courchine, Ines Rutkovskis, Stacey Woodason, Susan Darling, Chris Pike, and Kelly Brennan, Although it was a dose game, Southeastern defeated our boys in overtime. 118 NOVEMBER 7-12, 1983 After the band, colorguard, majorettes and cheerleaders enter- tained at half-time, Kelley Brennan was named Homecoming Queen for 1983. The Queen and her court were then chauffeured around the football field by Mr. Pino, dressed in his special Homecoming attire. The week ended with a Homecoming Dance that evening at the High School cafeteria, sponsored by student council. Overall, Homecoming week 1983 was a very successful week with many happy memories for all. 119 SPONSORS 7 A. Wagner Kathi and Tom Rogers Regan and Jarrett Dery Mr. and Mrs. William J.
