She has been a behind-the-scene person, doing tedious but very important tasks for us. With- out her help in organizing committees and activities, the class would not be as successful as it has been. She is a fine person, and she has a special personality which has made her well-liked by the class. Sometimes a class needs not only someone to advise them, but also someone to listen to them, and she has been that person. Thus, to show our appreciation to two advi- sors — Mrs. Walter Precourt and Mrs. Diane Martin — we dedicate our yearbook and thank you both for your time, your effort, and most of all, your friend- ship. Mr. Walter Precourt Mr. Precourt has been an advisor to the class of 1979 for the past four years. During these years, he has sac- rificed many hours of his personal time to help the class with their many, many projects. He initiated a $10,000 scholarship fund and has worked hard in help- ing the class reach that goal. He has been not only an advisor to the class, but also a friend, always asking us to smile even when things seemed unbearable. His one desire, has always been to have our class strive for excellence. The Class of 1979 will long remember Mr. Precourt and all of the events and fund-raisers that he helped to make successful. Most of all, we would like to thank him for staying with us through the bad times as well as the good. We appreciate that more than words can express. 2 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Miss Jane Clancy Mrs. Dolores Robbins Mr. Peter Klin READING DEPARTMENT Mrs. Katheryn Rogers Mrs. Muriel Sammer MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Mr. Frederick Kellcy Chairman Mrs. Karen Boucher HISTORY DEPARTMENT Mr. Fredric Bartek Chairman Mrs. Elizabeth McKinley Mr. Albert Nuttall Mr. Joseph Dcry Miss Diana Berberian Mrs. Eileen Kicser Mrs FxJna Phillips 5 FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Mr. Robert Maher Chairman Mrs. Lorna Russell Mr. Walter Precourt SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Mrs. Nanq ' Hughes Mr. John Minichiello Chairrruin Mrs. Diane Martin Mrs. Diane Scully Mr. Carmen Reade HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT Mrs. Geneva Rounds Mrs. Elizabeth Faria Mrs. Linda Bury Chairman INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Mr. John Beausolcil Mr. Paul Mongcon Mr. Gtx rgc DeValk PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Mr. Lawrence Laroque Miss Catherine Kunz GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT Mr. John Kieser Mr. John Atwood Mr. Rene Tellier g Guidance Director BUSINESS DEPARTMENT Mrs. Barbara DcPaola Miss Evelyn Rapoza aatrman LIBRARIAN TECHNOLOGIST Mrs. Veronica Maher Mr. Arnold Kenniston Mrs. Louise Dnofrio r9 r Miss Norma Cloutier Mr. Paul Hassie A.V. Since we first entered Norton High When we wandered the halls — lost and confused — While the upper classmen Icxjked on rather amused. We, somehow, survived those first few days And proceeded to go on, in our own ways; For as Freshmen we had much to learn As a prosperous class — much to earn We worked together throughout the years Sharing the laughter, sharing the tears We proved to others and to ourselves as well That whatever we ' d try, we ' d also excel. We ' ll never forget all the times we ' ve had Not only the gcxxj, but also the bad. Even now, we look back and still remember: The first dance we held as Freshmen in December; The yearly Penny Sales which were a great success Despite beliefs that we would come out with less; And the powder puff games which were full of fun: Not to mention the float — a prize for which we won. But now as the end of our high school days draw near. Each must think of his future and his own career; For as builders of the future, we have our own path to choose, As builders of the future, we have memories we ' ll never lose. CLASS HISTORY Rachael Sha ' w )ur freshman year was full of expectations for the future. Our first money making venture was a grab bag candy lie, and then came the Christmas dance, followed by our greatest achievement — The Penny Sale. We ended the ear with the farewell dance and also had a sum of $1,600 in our scholarship fund. n our sophomore year, we were confident of our abilities and planned even more activities. In Decmeber 1976, we ponsored a shopping spree, another Christmas dance, and then our Spring event — our Penny Sale. The only unsuc- sssful activity we had in this was our Dinner dance, but that did not defeat us, for we immediately formed our Ring ommittee. Later in the year, the Prom committee was formed and the class motto and colors were chosen. At the end 1977 we had $4,600 in our scholarship fund. IS juniors, we came back more determined than ever. First, we received our unique style rings at our Ring Dance, and hen, at the first homecoming, we won first place with our float De-feet the Craftsmen. The Powder Puff game fol- Dwed with a tie between the juniors and seniors. Next, we sponsored a dance for the J. C. Solmonese Scholarship und and raised $250 for it. The Penny Sale was another highlight as usual, followed by the Prom at the Condessa ith the theme So Many Roads to Choose. By the end of the year, we had raised $7,740 for our scholarship fund. )ur senior year was filled with many events — The Welcome Dance, the Senior Picnic, the building of our float, tchin ' for a victory — we can ' t bear to lose, our magazine drive, the spaghetti supper, the powder puff game in which the enior girls defeated the junior girls, and the Valentine Dance, followed by the Penny Sale and Senior Class Play. Our inal last days together as a class will be senior week with a class trip, class night, and graduation. The four years have one by quickly and we are proud to say we have achieved our goals. 49 PENNY SALE The Penny Sale has been the main fund raising event for the Norton High School Class of 1979 Scholarship fund. Each year we have been fortu- nate enough to increase our attendance and the value of our prizes. Every member of the class has donated some portion of time to make the Penny Sale a success and this has helped to unify the Build- ers of the Future. Clockwise From Top: Tim and Mike counting the money as Mrs. Martin stares in amaze- ment; Mr. Precourt can ' t believe he ate the whole thing; Rachael checks white elephant table; Darlena takes care of little brother Sam ' s tickets; Jenny doing her best to help the class reach its goal; Cathy and Mark look over the cakes. The team only had one returning regular, Senior Captain Dan Rapp. To every- one ' s surprise, this team closed out its regular season with a 16-4 record. The key to Norton ' s success was coach Howard Kelley who molded the team into one which won the Mayflower League Small School Division Title, qualifying for the E. Mass Basketball Tourna- ment for the fifth time in six years, as well as the Mayflower Champi- onship held at Norton High. Although Norton really did not have any explosive offensive player, balanced scoring from Dan Rapp, Brian Metzger and Charlie Marchese, and the best team defense in the May- flower League paved the way to success. Juniors Jon Anderson and Ray Labrie both performed well in the power forward slot, while Steve Bishop provided an offensive punch when needecf from either the guard or forward position. Seniors David Gonsalves, Alan Helmreich, along with promising sophomores Mark Hoyle and Steve Ellard per- formed well when called upon, rounded out the season long squad. Joining the team at mid-season Seniors Roy Mckillop, Ralph Steffa- nelli and Freshman Sam Smith provided invaluable help both in games and in practice. All in all it turned out to be a banner year for the very successful Lancer Basketball team. Row 1 — Capt. Dan Rapp Rcni ' 2 — S. Smith, M. Hoyle, B. Metzger, S. Bishop, J. Anderson, R. The team was led by senior co-captains Cathy Kinney and Jill Broyles. Also outstanding for the team were juniors Betsy Etter, averaging 15 points a game, and Theresa Ruta and Maria Mcintosh. A highlight of the season was an overtime vic- tory against league leading Apponequet.
