We feel that Miss Burtt and Mrs. Kieser have been the motivating force behind the success of all our high school events. Particularly, do we owe them our thanks for the success of our auction and Junior Prom. They have shown a sincere interest in our class, and we not only respect them as teachers, but also as friends. And so, to thank you in some small way for all you have done, we dedicate our 1976 yearbook to you both. DEDICATION OF THE SOJOURN TO SENIOR ADVISORS MISS REBECCA BURTT AND MRS. EILEEN KIESER MRS. EILEEN KIESER SENIOR CLASS POEM written by SHARON MOREAU TREASURES There are many treasures in life to be won. The treasure of knowledge, the treasure of fun; The band playing gaily, each sport in full swing, Many a memory later will bring. For some, school was just another chore, But for others, it meant so much more — A hope in the future to help mankind, This is a treasure many will find. The teachers guided us as we went along, Although, at times, we thought they were wrong. They were trying to help us develop our best. So that we could meet challenges in life ' s test. Memories are treasures that never will fade. All the good times, and the friendships we ' ve mad e. To some, treasures are gold; to others, silver and jade, But to the class of 1976, they are accomplishments made. Administra Hon 0 i Principal Super in tenden t MR. MAURICE J, SPLAINE, JR. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1976 This year has afforded an opportunity for each individual player to experience phases of High School competition. It has brought together a selected collection from life which emphasized desire and determination. The patience, time and care that unfolded during this season was symbolic of the pride at Norton High School. It has been stimulating and enjoyable to be a part of a team that has shown it is alive and growing to meet its challenges. Soon you will look ba ck pleasurably on the year of a 3 and 7 season and say that was the beginning, the year we played with pride and dignity. The coaching staff and I bid a farewell to the players that are leaving and welcome the new and old aboard for the 1976 season. Thank you, the student body of N.H.S., for your support. Although the girls cannot boast of a winning season, many of the game scores do not express the close rivalry in competition. Two victories and one tie were achieved during the season, even though the opposing team often had years of experi- ence over the rookie Norton team. Goals were scored by Lee Ann Ells, 4; Debbie Fillian, 2; Kathy Etter, 2; and Beverly Munns, 1. Pinkman. 1975-76 VARSITY BASKETBALL When the 1975-76 basketball season began, there was much optimism as to how the Norton Lancers would do. It was a senior dominated team with very little varsity experience. The talent was there but would these young men function as a team. Well, it turned out better than expected. The team finished with a record of 16 wins, and 3 losses, and a Co-championship in SEMass Division III with Dighton-Rehobeth, the finest record in the Attleboro area, and one of the finest records in Norton ' s History. Norton ' s season started with impressive wins over Blue Hills, two over Avon, and Mansfield. Then the league schedule began with hard fought victories over New Bedford Voke, St. Anthony, and Westp ort. The Lancers then ran into two heartbreaking defeats to Diman and D- R, where the games could have gone either way. The Lancers then went on a seven game win streak with an important victory over D-R which was the climax of this streak. The Lancers being a little down emotionally after the D-R game met a good Bourne team and were narrowly defeated by two points. This left them in a tie with D-R, and that ' s how it would stay as the Lancers won their final two games a nine point win over Case and an exciting three point win over Mansfield culminating their regular season. The Lancer Team was led by their co-captains Bruce Spencer who was the team leader and Don Withers the team ' s leading scorer at 15 points a game. The other starters were: senior Jay Anderson who was one of the team ' s best defensive players, the other, Brian Larson also a starter. The other starter was Junior Glenn Anderson the team ' s second, leading with a 12 point per game average. There were others who contributed, while coming off the bench; seniors Vern McKillop, Joe Burchill, Bill Cheetham, Doug Anderson, and Junior Andy Busmanis. The season was a fine one, and with three capable starters returning, and a strong J. V. team and under Coach Howard Kelley ' s fine direc- tion, the Lancers should have another great season. 81 1 GirVs Varsity Basketball KNEELING: L. Ells, K. Ettcr. The team had looked forward to a better record but some close games and strong competition dissappointed their hopes. Senior co-captain Kathy Etter led the team with a 13 point scoring average and also as the defensive stand out with 15 rebounds per game. Senior co-captain Lee Ann Ells and sophomore Linda Mueller were the outstanding playmakers, while sophomores Melinda Shaw, Cher ' l Swinimer, and Junior Susan Chu did an excellent job as the team ' s forwards. The returning varsity players are looking forward to a winning season next year. JUNIOR VARSITY The Girl ' s Junior Varsity basketball team had a very good season and compiled an 8-10 record. The team ' s high scorers were Captain Ruth Ann Scaringi, Jill Broyles, and Debby Pillion. Next year ' s J. The 1975 Norton High Track season proved to be an exciting year for Coach Gaides. While finishing with a seven win and five loss season, the track team kept Gaides ' never having a losing season record intact. The season began with a loss to powerful Old Rochester but they won their next two league meets rather convincingly over Wareham and Bourne. The Lancers then lost a heartbreaking grudge match to the defending champions, Diman, and finished strong by beating Bishop Connally and New Bedford Voke. Coach Gaides hopes to continue his winning ways in 1976 while having the benefit of a track for the first time. The season featured a big 11-6 win over Old Rochester as the Lancers pounded out a six year high of 16 hits and rode the clutch pitching of Vernon McKillop to vic- tory. State playoff and division runner-up New Bed- ford Voke also suffered defeat at the hands of the Lancers by a narrow 2-1 score. Sophomore Gene Stuart was the victor allowing the opposition but one hit. The biggest near miss of the season was a loss to league winning powerhouse Wareham by a 9-8 score in extra innings. Back to back home runs by Rick LaLiberte and Ray Lange brought the Lancers close, but the big upset was not to be. Other big games included an extra inning loss to Avon despite a towering 2 run homer by Dave Fogerty. Fogerty lost a 1 hitter to Apponequett later in the season by a 1-0 score. Vernon McKillop received the MVP Award with Richard LaLiberte being chosen as the most improved player. Jim Thurber received the JFK Award and David Fogerty was selected to the league All-Star Team as the starting first baseman. Area newspaper teams also singled out LaLiberte and Vernon McKillop for added recognition. Let me introduce you to a Friend who will never leave you! He will stick by your side when everyone else flees, and He will take care of every need you have. In fact. He is such a good Friend that He made a way that you can know you ' re going to Heaven when you die! This Friend is Jesus! Let me show you the way He made for you. The Bible plainly shows that there are only four things you must know to be saved. I. You are a sinner. Romans 3:23 — For all have sinned . . . 2. God has a price on sin — death and hell! Ronnans 6:23 — For the wages of sin is death . . . 3. Jesus paid the price. Romans 5:8 — But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 4. If you will receive that price as your hope for Heaven and receive Jesus as your Saviour from sin, He will make you His child and will take you to Heaven when you die- Romans 1 0:9 — That if thou shalt con- fess with they mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Not only do you not have to walk alone again, but by taking Christ as your Saviour, your enternal life is taken care of and you can be in Heaven with Him forever. Who knows? You could die today! Just now won ' t you simply ask Him into your heart and life? Romans 10:13 — For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. I introduce you to my Friend, Jesus. Will you take His hand? HERITAGE BAPTIST CHURCH 308 Central St., Foxboro, MA Schedule of Services 1 0 A.M. Sunday School I I A.M. Morning Services 7 P.M. Evening Service 7 P.M.
