Precourt, Ji We, the class of 1975, are pleased to dedicate this year ' s Sojourn to Walter F. Precourt, Jr. Mr. Precourt has been of great service to us, both as a class advisor and as an individ- ual. He has been teaching at Norton High School for the past fourteen years and many of us have been fortunate enough have had him as a teacher. Throughout our senior year, he has aided in all of our activities, and has been extremely helpful in planning senior events, especially the Spaghetti Supper. Not only is Mr. Precourt a senior advi- sor, but he has also been the Purple Key advisor for the past few years. This worthy teacher has helped us tremendously; most of all he has been a friend to all of us. Mr. Precourt has earned our respect and admiration as a teacher as well as a person, and we honor him in this way to show our grati- tude to him. In Appreciation Miss Jane Clancy To Miss Jane Clancy, our Senior Class Advi- sor, we extend our appreciation for all that she has done for us as advisor in the past two years. Particularly, we will remember her for the many hours she gave of her time in preparation for our Junior Prom, and we attribute its success in great part to her. And, as she gave us success, we hope that she will continue to have the success she has attained not only as a teacher but also as a class advisor. She has not only taught and advised us, but she has also become a friend and a person we shall remember. We wish her good luck and express a sincere thank you for never letting us down. Boys ' 1974 Track Senior Leo Dean Senior Dave Rostron Senior Bruce Larson The 1974 Norton High Track Team managed to extend Coach Gaides ' record of never having a losing season. The Lancer track men won 5 meets while losing 4. The season started out with a loss to Old Rochester, but the team then went on to win the next three straight. After being handed a defeat by tough Diman Voke, Norton upset Wareham and Bishop Connolly. The Norton team then lost the next meet to the New Bedford Voke team and ended the season by losing a non-league meet to Bishop Feehan. Captain Ray Oberg did a great job in leading the team, with valuable contributions by Kevin Raymond, Duke Zumalt, Bob McKillop, Donald Spencer, and Chris Zachorne. Bill Cheetham broke the discus record but at the same time Kevin Raymond broke Bill ' s record. Duke Zumalt broke the shot put record and Leo Dean broke the record in the mile. With veterans like Rick Perry, Scot Johnson, Bruce Larson, Imants Reks, Leo Dean, and Dave Rostron returning for another season, Coach Gaides hopes to keep his winning record intact. After defeating St. Anthony ' s, they lost the next two, and then came on to triumph over Blue Hills Regional. Trouble started and they lost the next three, but finally broke their los- ing streak by defeating New Bedford Voke and St. Anthony ' s. Almost all of the teams Norton competed against were comprised of two or four year veteran players. With the combined efforts of the experienced players and new talent com- ing up. People were wondering: How good will the 1974 football team be? This year the team had a new head coach Ray Jackson. The team worked very hard in pre-season trying to get into the swing of things. The Lancers opened their season against arch-rival Mansfield hoping to renew their last years victory. It was a very close game all the way, but because Mansfield was able to capitalize on Norton ' s mistakes they pulled out a slim 20-14 victory. It was a heartbreak- ing loss. The next game, Norton traveled to Medfield in a rain storm. Here they just could not get it together and lost 19-0. With a coach and a team that never gave up, the Lancers went on to crush Diman Voke 40-0. Scott Briggs became the first player in Norton to run back a kickof f since 1967. Next, Norton took on the tough Sharon team and suffered a 39- 19 defeat. The Lancers suffered another hurting loss to New Bed- ford Voke 39-7. After last year ' s loss to Old Rochester, Norton came back deter- mined to win and upset the Old Rochester team 14-6. Then, Nor- ton lost two games in a row. Dennis- Yarmouth 42-19 and Cardinal Spellmen 50-24. Norton was extremely outmatched but proved that they could score against any team. Norton ended its season with two big victories over Dighton Rehoboth 20-6 and Bristol Plym- outh 32-0, to end up with last year ' s record of 4-6. The team did an outstanding job, said Coach Jackson, and was led by co-captains Ray Hicks and Steve Bennett who did out- standing jobs. Ray Hicks, Scott Briggs, Bruce Spencer, Steve Ben- nett, and Vern McKillop were all named to the Taunton Gazette All-Star Team. Coach Jackson will return next year with hopes of having another successful year. 1974 Football Record Norton 14 Mansfield 20 Norton 0 Medfield 19 Norton 40 Diamon Voke 0 Norton 19 Sharon 39 Norton 7 New Bedford Voke 38 Norton 14 Old Rochester 6 Norton 19 Dennis-Yarmouth 42 Norton 24 Cardinal Spellmen 50 Norton 20 Dighton Rehoboth 6 Norton 32 Bristol Plymouth 0 League 2-3 Overall 4-6 80 Football Game Action 1974 J. The Lancers, however, could not put those few extra points on the board to win. They played tough, but had some bad breaks. A four point loss to Foxboro began a series of close losses, including a game against Diman Voke which went into double overtime only to end in a heartbreaking four point loss. The Lancers did have two close games turn out in their favor, though, in clashes with New Bedford Voke and Coyle-Cassidy. A season, though, cannot be measured in merely wins and losses, as the 1974-75 Lancers provided some of the most exciting basketball to be seen. The loudest cheer goes to coach Howard Kelly for molding 14 individuals into a unified basketball team. The Lancers have several 3 and 4-year Varsity veterans leaving this year. Dave Bonenfant, Captain last year and this year, ended his 4 year Varsity career with an astounding 997 points, just missing the 1000 point mark. 6 ' 5 starter Steve Moreau, who always used his height to good advantage, was a valuable asset to the team, as was a very spirited and determined Steve Bennett. Although he was unable to complete this season, flashy ballhandler Scott Briggs added speed and good scoring. Senior Rick Perry was also often able to help the Lancers out of tight spots. Seniors Bruce Larson, Howard Landis, and Leo Dean — though their roles were not as visible — also contrib- uted greatly to the team ' s success. Junior Bruce Spencer, a starter this year, and juniors Vern McKillop and Don Withers were also key players in the 74-75 season. With these and other returning Varsity players, along with some J. V. players coming up, the Norton Lancers are looking forward to another winning season next year. RECORD: Norton 60 Coyle-Cassidy 50 Norton 68 St. Anthony ' s 47 Norton 52 Foxboro 57 Norton 38 W. The Norton Hockey team did not have as successful a season as they had hoped for. The team was led by three senior veterans: Peter MacLean, Jeff Bramwell, and Matt Crowe. They were tremendously helped by the brilliant goal tending of Gregg Bramwell and Joe Low, who will be returning next year. Even though their record ended as 1-12-2, the season had many high points. One was the brilliant upset of Norton ' s arch rival, Mansfield. In a very tough, hard hitting game, Norton defeated Mansfield 4-3. Then again to show that the team was stronger than everyone thought, Norton came within an eyelash of upsetting the league ' s leading team, Attleboro. Norton was winning by one point until the last seconds when an Attleboro goal tied the game. It was a very tough defensive game with good forechecking by the forwards. The players all think very highly of their coach Kevin Mahoney, who has been with the team for three years. In team statistics, Peter MacLean was the team ' s highest scorer, and three members made the all star team; they were Peter MacLean, Wayne Dwyer, and Joe Low. Even though the team will suffer a great loss because of three members graduating, the Lancer Hockey team is looking forward to a successful season next year.
