I H 73 SOJOU RN YEARBOOK DEDICATION TO PRINCIPAL HENRI A. YELLE We the Senior Class of 1973 dedicate our year- book to Henri A. Yelle, Principal of Norton High School. After thirty-eight years of service to the schools in Norton, Mr. Yelle will retire in June. In the rise from classroom teacher, to assistant principal, and then to principal, Mr. Yelle has shared his life with many students. His contrib- utions have been many; and his guidance, influ- ence, and generosity to the schools as well as to Norton itself will not be forgotten. We wish you good health and happiness in the years to come, and we wish that you take with you fond memories of Norton High School. IN APPRECIATION We, the Senior class, would like to extend an appreciation to Mr. Richard B. Kirby, Music Supervisor in the Norton Public Schools. We respect Mr. Kirby as a faculty member and friend; hut, most important, we appreciate him for his many contributions to the schools. Through his efforts, he has broughl recognition to Norton High School. We have had the besl half time show in the league, and our dance band is one of the best in the area. Mr. Kirby has also given his own time to help in composing arrangements for our high school musicals. He has always shown interest in the students of Norton, and we hope that he will continue to play a major role here at Norton High School. s K I 0 R S SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS. L to R: Kathy Scott, Vice-President; Sheila Bassett, President; Katy Mul- cahy. Secretary; Karen Scott, Treasurer. ' The saddest thing under the sun above Is to say good-bye to the ones you love. All the things that I have known Became my life, my very own. Before you know, you will say good-bye For good-bye, good-bye . . . it ' s time to cry. But, I will not weep nor make a scene Just say thank you life for having been. The loudest cry under the sun above Is the silent good-bye of ones you love. You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I ' ll come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall All you have to do is call And I ' ll be there . . . You ' ve got a friend. Pre-season practice looked good and the Lancers had a great team spirit Captains, Steve Crogan and Chuck Perry, led the team into the first game, a non-leaguer against Mansfield. Both teams were winless for a long time, but Mansfield emerged the victor in a tough 13-0 game. Then came the Lancer ' s first league game. Led by quarterback Lee Burchill and by running backs Chuck Perry and Scott Briggs, the Lancers shutout Diman Voke 28-0. After a 22-0 win over Southeast- ern Regional, the Lancers again came on strong against Old Rochester and won a decisive 14-6 victory. Norton then went against an undefeated Case High and came out on the short end of a 15-6 score. After an unfortunate accident to quarterback Lee Burc- hill, Dave Danko took over the pilot ' s job and along with the strong running of Chuck Perry led Norton to a 28-15 victory over Dighton-Rehoboth. The Lancers then travelled to Wareham for their first Friday night game against the league leaders. The Lancers played extremely well, but lost a tough one 6-0. After losing a non-leaguer to Dennis-Yar- mouth 8-0, Norton played to a scoreless tie with New Bed- ford Voke to end their season with a very respectable 4-4-1 record. Norton was led offensively by quarterbacks Burchill and Danko, running backs Stan Walasavage and Chuck Perry and wide receiver Bruce Hicks. Also, the offensive line did a good job, with Steve Crogan and Duke Zumalt the standouts. Zumalt was named to the Sun Chronicle All-Star Team at (•enter. Defensive stars were Steve Kenny, Ray Oberg, Bruce Hicks, and Jim Barney. L. to R.. First Row: K. Beatty, J. Barney, L. Burchill, B. Hicks. Captain C. Perry, Captain S. Crogan, S. Walasavage, R. Gaides, Captain Mike McCabe, Bruce Larson, Kevin Willis, Glenn Anderson, Bob McKillop. The Lancer Cross Country team went into the 1972 season with a young and inexperienced team. The Lancers had only two experienced runners, seniors Kevin Willis and Captain Mike McCabe. Norton ' s first meet was with Diman Regional, which was a loss. Norton ' s second meet was their one and only victory, an exciting 27-28 win over Westport. The Lancers then lost three straight meets, including a heartbreaking 27-28 loss to Old Rochester. Norton finished out a 1-4-0 season with a fine showing at the Conference Meet. The Lancers divided themselves into two teams. The Javees won in their division, led by 8th grader, Glenn Anderson, who placed first. The varsity however, minus three of their usual runners, finished a dismal last. Norton was led throughout the season by seniors, Capt. Mike McCabe, who was elected to the Southeastern Massachusetts All-Star Team, and Kevin Willis, junior Bob McKillop, Ken Welch and Glenn Anderson. The Lancers will be looking forward to the next few seasons with such a fine young team. As Norton was coming into the new league, all the players were confident of improving last year ' s dismal record. They were but to prove that they were not a team to be run over and put down. Norton had a big forward line with returning center Dave Richmond, and forwards Tom Kinney and Dave Bonen- fant. With the rest of the team, including Dave Danko and the two wonders called the Briggs Brothers, the Lancers were ready to go. Traveling to Mansfield for the premiere game, the Lancers played well but lost to the Hornets. Norton then met Dighton- Rehoboth in which Tom Kinney was the leading Lancer scorer, as he was against Mansfield. After losing to them and to South- eastern Regional, Norton started to click as a team should. In a wild battle, Norton came out on the top of a 50-48 overtime victory against Diman Voke. Tom Kinney again led the way with 25 points, the high for the season for the Lancers. After that, they were felled by a streak of bad luck as the Lancers lost seven in a row, including three exciting last second games. Norton lost to St. Anthony ' s, 42-40 in the last five seconds; to Seekonk with one second left to play, and to Bourne, 45-43, again in the last five seconds. But Norton was coming on strong, and won one of their own as they beat Diamond Voke in the last second of overtime. Then against Wareham, a team which had already beaten Norton earlier, the Lancers took con- trol for their third victory of the season and second in a row. The Lancers then lost three more games before coming up with another victory over St. Anthony ' s, with Tom Kinney and Dave Richmond leading the way with 18 and 17 points respectively. Norton lost their two remaining games to Seekonk and Bourne, closing out a very exciting season, although not a winning one. The final record was 4-15 but the Lancers managed to finish 4- 6 on the league slate and tied for third place with Westport. Outstanding for the Lancers were forward Tom Kinney, who pumped in 243 points for a 13.6 average. Sophomore Dave Bonenfant was the second leading scorer, with 191 points and a 10.6 average. Senior Dave Rich had a very good year; he played outstanding on the boards and his con- tributions were helpful. Also showing spark were senior guard Dave Danko, who did most of the ballhandling and played extremely well, and Norman and Scott Briggs. 1972 RECORD NORTON 36 MANSFIELD 57 NORTON 38 DIGHTON-REHOBETH 65 NORTON 70 SOUTHEASTERN 77 NORTON 50 DIMAN VOKE 48 NORTON 37 WAREHAM 69 NORTON 65 OLD ROCHESTER 99 NORTON 31 DIGHTON-REHOBETH 52 NORTON 40 ST. With the experience gained this sea- son, and the addition of some of the upcoming freshmen, Coach Nuttall looks forward to getting back with a winning record next year. They had a good number of returning players and were very optimistic. Norton lost their first four starts, three of which were non- league. The Lancers then got on the right track by defeating Nipmuc, 4-3. Then, Norton lost two in a row, one to the league champs, Hopedale, and the other to arch-rival Bellingham. The Lancers proceeded to beat Blackstone Valley 8-3. The Lancers then ran into a streak of bad luck. The Norton ballplayers lost eight games in a row. The Lancers finally came into their own as they busted out of their slump and won three of their last five games including an exciting 3-2 defeat of Dover-Sherborn. Norton was led by the strong pitching arms of Senior Art Wood, and Juniors Steve Crogan and Lee Burchill. Art Wood was again voted the outstanding player and was named to the Sun Chronicle All-Star Team. Junior Steve Crogan led the team in hitting with sizzling .377. Along with Steve were Senior Vern Ferrini, Juniors Stan Walasavage and Rick Derby and Sophomore Bob Leathers who contributed to the Lancer hitting attack. Coach Howard Kelly looks forward to the return of most of last year ' s team and hopes to improve on a 6-11 record in the new league. 1972 BASEBALL RECORD Norton 1 Diman Voke 5 Norton 3 Mansfield 4 Norton 5 Mansfield 8 Norton 2 Blackstone Milville 9 Norton 4 Nipmuc 3 Norton 0 Hopedale 4 Norton 2 Bellingham 1 Norton 8 Blackstone Valley 3 Norton 1 Medfield 3 Norton 3 Holliston 4 Norton 0 Ashland 6 Norton 8 Hopkington 10 Norton 1 Medway 2 Norton 5 Millis 15 Norton 1 Blackstone Milville 4 Norton 11 Nipmuc 5 Norton 1 Hopedale 6 Norton 3 Dover-Sherborn 2 Norton 4 Bellingham 6 Norton 5 Blackstone Valley 4 74 1972 TRACK L. to R., First Row: Coach Charles Gaides, H. This was the first year girls could compete on the varsity level with boys in interscholastic sports. The pre-season objective was for another winning season, and at the end of it all, the Lancers came out with a 7-6 record. This was the third straight victorious season for the Lancers under Coach Charles Gaides. The Norton runners started out with the season on the right track. They defeated Blue Hills, but then they fell vic- tim to two hard luck defeats by four and three points respectively to Southeastern and Middleboro. Norton then played two of the League leading teams, Dover and Ashland; the Lancers came out on the losing end both times. The track men and women finally got their first league win over Nipmuc. The Lancers then proceeded to lose their next two meets before capping off their season with four straight wins over Millis, Bellingham, Medfield and Blackstone Valley. The win over Bellingham was the most exciting meet as the Lancers pulled out a 71-69 victory over our chief rivals for the final time. During the season, records were set by Jim Barney, who was also the leading point getter, in the low and high hur- dles; Chuck Perry in the 100 and the pole vault; Blair Titus in the pole vault; and Mike McCabe in the mile. Jim Barney (Co-Captain for the 1973 season along with Chuck Perry) led the Norton runners in the States as he placed fourth in the Class E Finals. The girls track team had only three meets against other girls ' teams, the . girls competed mostly against the boys. However, the girls went undefeated, beating Bishop Feehan, Holliston, and Ashland. Girl stars were Tracy Best, Suzie Thomae, Leesa Thomae, Vicki Lehr, and Caryn Smith. The girls also won an unofficial relay at Ashland against the Ashland girls during the boys meet. The victorious team consisted of Cathy Lacombe, Lynne Harrington, Suzie Thomae, and Tracy Best. Both track teams look forward to carrying on the established tradition of victorious seasons in the future. 1972 TRACK RECORD Norton 80 Blue Hills 60 Norton 62 Middleboro 66 Norton 62 East Bridgewater 42 Norton 59 Southeastern 63 Norton 45 Dover- Sherborn 95 Norton 36 Ashland 104 Norton 91 Mipmuc 49 Norton 40 Holliston 100 Norton 63 Medway 77 Norton 86 ' 2 Millis 53V Norton 71 Bellingham 69 Norton 79% Medfield 60M Norton 107 Blackstone Valley 33 75 76 1972-73 NORTON HOCKEY CLUB During the winter of 1972-1973, the Norton Hockey Club was formed. This was the first year of organized hockey in Nor- ton. Going into league play, Norton was playing against larger schools, such as Attleboro and North Attleboro. The Lancers were going to have to work hard during the season. It was hard to get practice ice as they practiced on Sundays at two A.M. Although the club did not win many games this year, they showed determination. The Lancer Hockey Club showed that it did have talent. The front line of the Walasavage brothers, Stan and Fred, and a rough Steve Crogan, was by far the best line for Norton. Stan and Fred Walasavage were the team ' s leading scorers and among the top league scorers, with the aggressiveness of Cro- gan on the boards enabling the puck to come their way. Also doing a good job on offense was the second line of Jeff Bram- well, Gordie Marshall, and Wayne Dwyer. Defensive Standouts for the club were Pete Maclean, and John and Reggie Mac- Pherson, who played some rough defense. Doing a great job guarding the nets for the Lancers was Jim Charette. The highlight of the Lancer season was when Norton won its first game, beating Mansfield 6-2. The Walasavage brothers each scored the magic hat trick, and goalie Jim Charette played a great game warding off a total of 27 shots. The biggest enemy of Norton was the inexperience of the young players, but the season was always exciting and the Norton crowds often thrilled. The future looks bright with the likes of young players who will be returning next year, such as Fred Walasavage, Reg- gie MacPherson, and Greg Bramwell. S. Girls finally got the chance to play track and softball after a long and hard fight. The softball team was small, but the interest and spirit were at a climax throughout the season. The girls faithfully practiced every day after school and sometimes on the weekends. The Lancers ( Lan- cerettes? ), under Coach Barbara Fell, were rewarded, though, with an overall 4-5 record, outstanding for a rookie team which played mostly against already established teams. Outstanding players on the team included: Sheila Bassett — catcher, Alma Best — shortstop, Elena Murch — second base, Sue Jacobs — pitcher and first base, and Patty Serode — pitcher and first base. The girls plan to continue and grow and improve their playing to make spring 1973 an even better season. Their goal: to be number one! 80 Front Row: K. Aughtry, R. Oberg, J. Barney, D. Bonenfanl, T.
