A time to be born, a time to die— A time for planting, a time for uprooting— A time to wound and a time to heal— A time to tear down and a time to rebuild— A time to cry, a time to laugh— A time for mourning and a time for dancing— A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones— A time to embrace and a time not to embrace— A time to seek and a time to count as lost— A time to keep and a time to throw away— A time to tear, a time to sew— A time for silence and a time for talking— A time to love and a time to hate— A time for war and a time for peace Foreword We have chosen as the theme of the 1971 Sojourn An Appointed Time, in order to express the many varied experiences we, as a class, have shared at Norton High School. We have lived through many of these times, times of war — peace — love — hate. We advance toward the future with the hope that we will face courageously and with great anticipation the times that make living with each other worthwhile and rewarding. I r 9 ! Dedication We have dedicated the 1971 Sojourn to Miss Diana Berberian and Mr. Joseph Solmonese. They have, through their devotion and patience, made a lasting impression in our lives and minds. To Miss Berberian and Mr. Solmonese, we express our sincere gratitude for their time and effort which they so generously gave in helping to plan and advise our many class projects, especially the prom and Spaghetti Supper. Also, we will never forget their math classes, both enjoyable and profitable. Through their guidance and congenial natures, we have come to respect and ad- mire them immensely. We regard them not only as teachers, but also as genuine friends. During the future, we will look back upon the many lessons they taught us with love and understanding. i Messages From the Administration At the end of the academic year in some schools there is a day designated as Commencement Day. Commencement Day is so named for the fact that even though your public education is ending, your real education of life is just beginning. It is my hope that the Norton School System has prepared each one of you with the necessary values, concerns, knowledge, reasoning power, and responsi- bility so that you are ready to commence your way through life in a mature, re- sponsible way. Knowing the students and teachers of Norton as I do, I am confident that the Norton School System has provided you with the opportunity to develop these talents. Therefore, I think that the future will be well provided for. May I express best wishes and congratulations to each of you. Maurice J. Splaine, Jr. Superintendent of Schools My sincere good wishes go with each member of the graduating class as you taki this first step into the future. May you find that your years of training in school will serve you well in leading happy, productive lives; may each of you make a unique contribution of service to family, community, and to your country. Henri A. Yelle Principal As you arrive at the turning of the road I want to extend to you, the Class of 1971, my very best wishes. The 1970 Junior-Senior Prom was one of the most enjoyable events of the year. The Grist Mill in Seekonk served once again as the setting for a successful prom. Prior to the event, the Junior Class spent many hours working to create colorful decorations. The theme, Age of Aquari- us, sparked an evening of fun and dance. Dancing to music of Alan Gregory ' s Band was a delight for all. The highlight of the night was the Grand March, followed by the crowning of Queen Paula Serode. Everyone who attended truly enjoyed being a part of the Age of Aquarius. I 48 The chaperones also enjoyed the festivities of the evening. Senior girls and their dates I Field Day Happenings Karen Kiefer and Wayne Reay enjoy watching a volleyball game. In May of 1970, Norton High School held its annual Field Day for grades seven through twelve. Field Day is a yearly event which most of the stu- dents look forward to and en- joy. There were numerous races and games to partici- pate in. The highlight of the day was the exciting baseball game be- tween the Senior boys and the Faculty. The Pie Eating Con- test, a new event last year, proved to be exciting and delicious ! Awards were presented to the winners of each competitive event. Special recognition was given to the boy and girl, in each grade, who were the over- all winners. Karen Scott and Karen Schliecher lead the Wheelbarrow Race. The Broad-jump is a popular event Two groups of eighth grade boys battle in a Tug of War. 0 Some took advantage of the good music to get in some dancing. What has Mike Harrington been up to this time? 52 Welcome Dance This year through the joint efforts of the Student Council and Senior Class, the annual Welcome Dance was presented on September 26, 1970. The music was provided by Fudge and the Vanilla Wafers , a really fantastic band. Everyone who attended seemed to enjoy the first dance of the school year. Mr. Solmonese, the Student Coun- cil advisor, and Miss Kiernan, Miss Rapoza, Mr. F. Kelley and Mr. R. Kelley, senior class advisors, were among the faculty present. 1970 Christmas Dance The Christmas Dance was held on December 19, 1970. This dance, sponsored by the Senior Class, was a great success. The decorations and the twenty-three foot tree were obtained by many seniors who worked on the dance. The Senior Class Advisors were also a great help in the preparation of the dance and as chaperones. The music was once again provided by the Fudge and the Vanilla Wafers. Santa Claus arrived to round out the evening by passing out gifts to lucky ticket holders. Tom Barney, Senior class president and his date, Nancy Teixeira talk with Mr. Robert Kelly, chaperone. Kristi Crund and Al Gomes eagerly wait for Santa to arrive. Some enjoyed dancing around the giant Christmas tree. 54 The elementary band adds to the enjoyable afternoon. A Winter Afternoon On Sunday afternoon, Dec. 20, 1970 the Music Department held its annual Christ- mas Concert. This was the first time the department has had an afternoon concert and it turned out to be a large success. Providing the entertainment were the High School Concert Choir under the direc- tion of Miss Regina Lopes, the eliementary band also directed by Miss Lopes, and the elementary choir directed by Miss Barbra Reims, who also was the piano accompanist for the older Choir. Also, before the program, a brass quinet played Christmas carols. program. e Pre-season practices were encouraging for the Lancers as Norton had a big, aggressive and experienced line and small, but determined backs. By noon of November 26th, Norton was forced to realize that they were winless. They accepted the fact that three months of hard work, devo- tion, and a year of anticipation would go without reward or satisfaction, especially for the Seniors. Although with- out a win, the tenacity and toughness of the Lancers ex- pressed to other league members their vain cries for vic- tory. Norton went into every game determined to achieve its first win, whether the team was Holliston, Millis, or Bellingham. In no game did Norton concede a victory without an earnest but vain fight. With each game came a surge of desire and emotion from the players, but they never seemed to fully recover from the opening kickoff return at Hopkinton, in their first game of the season. The Lancer ' s were plagued with many injuries to key players this season, including Don Main, starting-end and kicker, with a knee operation, Tom Oberg, starting tackle, knee injury, Everett Bennett, end, fractured wrist, Tom Barney, center, knee injury and dislocated elbow, and Don Sheaff, guard, knee injury. Besides these there were many other disappointing injuries adding to Norton ' s setbacks. Seniors who were stand outs on the field were Al Gomes at end or halfback, Harry Kearns at fullback, Bill Ferguson at tackle, and Shaun Mahoney a line- backer. No player on the team offers any excuse for the hap- less season, but if able to replay the season there would indeed be the same desire to win, probably with different and better results. But that burden must be left to the underclassmen; to avenge for the Seniors with the desire taught to them this year and to enjoy the satisfaction of a win. 60 9 Practice Freshman Football The 1970 Norton Lancer Freshman football season started and ended in victory, but met with disappointment otherwise. The Lancer Frosh, captained by Bob Leathers and Ray O ' Berg, kicked off the season with a 14-6 vic- tory over Hopkinton. The defensive effort of O ' Berg com- plement — the hard running of Rodger Winsor and scoring of Leathers and Tom Araujo. The team suffered defeats to Holliston and Medway be- fore a fine broken field run by Bob Leathers salvaged a tie with Millis. Despite the fine play of Leathers, Winsor, and O ' Berg, the lost to Ashland, Dighton, Dover, and Medfield. Traditional rival, Bellingham marked the last game of the season. Fullback Roger Winsor took charge and led the Lancers to a 22-0 victory. His 4 points were comple- mented by 6 from Leathers and 2 from Araujo. De- fensively, the Frosh were led by O ' Berg, Duke Zumault, Jim Valquette, Leathers and Araujo. Despite the losing season it was obvious that the Frosh team had good spirit and desire, and also apparent that Winsor, Leathers, and O ' Berg were three of the best ball- players in the league. Also, other fine ballplayers on the Freshman team have Norton optimistic about our future teams and their success. This was accomplished along with the fact that Norton has no home meets, due to the lack of facilities. The high point of the 1970 season was made by Capt. Chris Baker, who, became State Champion in the Javelin. Another high point was the fact that Norton placed Fourth in the Conference Meet, highest ever. We are hoping, with the many new and promising faces this season, to maintain and better our current status in the league. We hope to compete in all varsity meets this season. The Senior members of the team are ready for action! Coach Gaides and Co-captains Chris Baker and Tom Barney look forward to a victorious season. Cross Country Row 1: C. Willis, B. Coughlin, Capt. C. The Lancer Cross Country season of 1970 was filled with many surprises, all pleasant. Coach Gaides was most apprehensive when the season began but a good showing in both the North- eastern Invitational Meet and the North Attleboro Jaycee ' s Invitational Meet proved that this was a team that with a little work was capable of achieving a winning season in the Tri-Valley Conference. The Lancers started their season off quite dis- appointingly, losing their first two meets to Ashland md Medway. In the loss to Medway the Lancers began to click as a team. Although they didn ' t win, they gave Medway a real scare. The Lancers then rallied to four successive wins, beating Blackstone, Nipmuc, Norfolk, and Millis. After losing a close one to Medfield, they again ral- lied to four out of the five remaining meets, losing only to Holliston. Most successful for the Lancers were Mike Mc- Cabe taking first place in eight of twelve meets, Capt. Chris Baker, and Harry Lehtinen an eighth grade member of the Varsity team. The Lancers placed tenth in the Massachusetts State Meet at Boston, a first for Norton High. They also placed fourth in the Tri-Valley Conference Meet in Norton, our best showing ever. The Cross Country season was a most gratifying one for Varsity lettermen, C apt. Chris Baker, Mike McCabe, Harry Lehtinen, Brian Coughlin, Tippy Willis, and Blair Titus. Coach Gaides is looking for- ward to a continuation of the fine Cross Country tradition that has been established at Norton High School. 67 The 1970-71 Varsity team members are: First row, A. LaGreca, Coach Phillip Norton. Missing are: N. Briggs, J. Warchal, and D. Voelker, M. Araujo, M. Abreu; Second row, M. Harrington, M. T. Withers. Jordan, Managers, F. Beatty, D. Richmond, J. Bullock, A. Gomes, Varsity Basketball The Lancer ' s 1970-71 season was another year of re- building but unlike last year, Coach worked with the underclassmen to produce a team of the future. The Lan- cer team carried only three Seniors: Co-Captains Al Gomes, Mike Araupo and also Marcy Abreu. There is great hope for next year ' s te am with underclassmen: Jim Bullock, Tom Withers, Norm Briggs, Jeff Warchal and Dave Richmond. The Lancer ' s finished the season with a 4-14 record, again winning the last contest of the season against Nor- folk, led by Senior Co-Captains Al Gomes and Mike Araujo. Sophomore Dave Richmond and Junior Jim Bullock controlled the boards while the ballhandling and shooting was helped with by Tom Withers, Jeff Warchal and Norm Briggs. Although the Lancer ' s season was not a victorious one, the experience gained by the underclassmen shows hope for a winning team next year. The limited number of Seniors along with the ability of the underclassmen to play and improve at the Varsity level has assured our optimism for next year ' s team. Leading this year ' s team, along with Co-Captain Al Gomes, were Co-Captain Mike Araujo and Junior Jim Bullock who were selected to the Tri-Valley All-Star Team. 68 Lancers in Action The Junior Varsity players are: First row, L. Burchill, D. Fergu- son, J. Barney, T. Withers, J. Ribiero, Second row, T. Ohlson, B. Coughlin, K. Beatty, M. McCabe, W. Enright, D. Freedman, J. Turner, B. Gallagher, and Coach Nuttall. Junior Varsity The Junior Varsity Basketball team compiled a disap- pointing record this year. The team gained five victories but suffered thirteen defeats. This was the poorest rec- ord in recent years. However, there were many encouraging factors con- cerning this season. Despite the loss of key players dur- ing the year, the team remained competitive, giving a good account of itself in each game. The brightest note of the year was the marked improvement of the team as the season progressed. With more experience, we can look forward to better things next year. 72 Is Dave dancing? Members of the Freshman Team are: Row 1, L. Hanley, D. Warchal, B. Leathers, J. Valquette, E. Smith, T. Marvel. Row 2, Mr. Kelley, coach, S. Gildersleave, C. Weeks, S. Bramwell. Freshman Basketball The Norton High School Freshman team, although coached extremely well by Mr. Howard Kelley, was only able to attain three victories while losing eleven other con- tests this season. Although there was never a lack of motiva- tion to win the games, the frosh could put it together only three times. It is here that the frosh have gained experience and knowledge to lead the J. V. and Varsity Basketball teams of the future. Much work and dedication can eventu- ally turn their record around; the potential is there, and so is the willingness and optimism. Leading the freshmen with steady shooting and good playmaking were Tom Araujo, Fred Walsavage, and Bob Leathers. Other invaluable contributions to the team were from Warchal, Bramwell, Bonenfant and Hanley. Coach Kelley and Capt. Leathers get ready for another game. Junior High Basketball The Seventh grade Basket- ball team had a disappoint- ing 3-9 record for the 1970- 71 Lancer season; but the experience gained was in- valuable to the players. The Eighth grade team attained an 8-4 record, finishing in third place in the Greater Taunton League. Great po- tential and improvement marked the success of the team and hopes for our fu- ture J. V. and Varsity teams. Seventh Grade Front- (1 to r) Coach John Kieser, Bruce Spencer, John Gnecco, Joe Burchill, Rich Laleberte, Benton Keene. Nrott Briggs, David Bonenfant, Mark Whitaker, Alan Fairbanks. Junior High Cheerleaders Baseball The 1970 Norton High Baseball team had their first losing season in many years. This was considered to be a rebuilding year, with many young players. Norton began its season with two tight 1-0 shutouts over Millis. They had three shutouts pitched by Steve Nichols over the course of the season. After this point the Lancers were out classed by many of the larger schools, but did have several close games with opportunities. 1970 saw the development of sev- eral fine prospects in third-baseman Vernon Ferrini, who developed into one of the leading hitters of the team. He was selected for the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team ; also catch- er Mike Araujo, the team leader by far, was selected to the local All-Star team. This season Norton is expecting to resume its winning ways in the sport as it has done in the past. Returning for ther last season are seniors: Mike Araujo, Wayne Reay, Ron Main, Ken McCarthy and Joe DeNicola. Senior players are: Manager James Kenworthy, Vernon Ferrini, Don Main, Wayne Reay, Mike Araujo. Underclassmen players: Row 1 R. Gomes, N. Briggs, L. Burchill. D. Freeman. J. Stairs. Row 2: J.
