Unfortunately, we must leave behind our teachers, our friends, and a part of ourselves. There is one very precious thing, however, that we will he ahle to take with us — our memories of NHS. The?e memories are important for they are centered on our working and living with people. Thus, our yearbook is an account of people, living and maturing together, and our beginning of everlasting friendships. We only hope that through our pictures, we can make someone remember a happy experience with people . If this wish is fulfilled, then our Yearbook is a success. Dedication This year, the Senior Class had a great deal of difficulty in deciding between two of our teachers for the Sojourn dedication. We, therefore have hap- pily decided to dedicate the 1969 Sojourn to both Mr. Albert Nuttall and Mr. Robert Kelly. These men have proven themselves more than worthy of this honor, through their endless devotion to every facet of school life. To the Student Body they are not only teachers, they are sincere, dedicated men, who genuinely are interested in the students and care about Norton High School. They have earned the greatest respect from the Students and the highest esteem from their fellow Faculty Members. Thus, with much gratitude we say thank-you to Mr. Kelly and Mr. Nuttall for helping us live our motto: Grow up and be great! 4 Superintendent Mr. Henri A. Yelle has been principal of our High School for the past ten years. He always has the time to speak with students about their problems and to help the students in any way. His concern has resulted in an excellent academic and extracurricular pro- gram. Assistant Principal The Norton School system is very fortunate to have Dr. George MacArthur as its superintendent. A dedicated man in every aspect of school life, Dr. MacArthur has earned the respect of both faculty and students. Mr. Maurice Splaine Jr. has begun his second year in Norton High School. Besides his duties of Assistant Prin- cipal, he advises the Purple Key and Student Council. We are very proud to have him in the Norton High School Administration. 6 Reading Department Art Department Mr. Philip Gorman, B.A.— Providence College; Miss Janie Mrs. Anne Ross, B.S.— Skidmore College. Junior fzirls and their escorts enjoying the gala atmosphere. 43 September Journey to On September 11, 1968, the Senior English classes, together with chaperones, Miss Kiernan, Mrs. Zwicker, Mr. Bartek, and Mr. Kenniston, took a class trip to Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut. Although it began as an overcast, rainy day, nothing could dampen the spirits of the students. Mystic Seaport is an Old New England Whal- ing Village, restored and kept exactly as it was in the late 1800 ' s and early 1900 ' s. We saw the old country stores, the blacksmith ' s shops, the old homes, and the actual whaling ship, where men lived for years at a time on the rough seas. Everyone agreed that the trip to Mystic was a most worthwhile and enjoyable adventure. Sandra Dubuc, Suzanne White, Danny Haskell, and Victor Soldat are enjoying the early American atmosphere at Mystic Seaport. But Miss Kiernan, we thought you knew where we were! 44 Mystic Connecticut The Blacksmith has caught the undivided attention of the students, as he shows us his great skill in making tools! The Welcome Dance: A Chance to Get Acquainted! The annual Welcome Dance is presented each year through the comhined efforts of the Student Council and the Senior Class. This first social activity of the year gave the upperclassmen a chance to renew old friendships and to meet the new freshmen. Music was provided by the well-known Baron ' s Five. The dance was a night of unforgettable entertainment for all who attended. ' Are we late? ask Marilyne Kearns and Carol Dion of the police officer. Junior High students becoming acquainted with high school activities! 47 Laurie Adams was chosen for the Jewish Veteran ' s Brotherhood Award. Carolyn Landis was a Semi-Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Award. tors The Christmas Dance, sponsored by our Senior class, was held on December 14, 1968 in the Norton High School audi- torium. All seniors helped in decorating a huge 20 foot Christmas Tree. The win- tery atmosphere was also enhanced by a sleigh full of presents in the middle of the dance floor. Music was provided by the British Rockers. The night was, in- deed, a perfect climax for the season ' s festivities. The only thing missing now is Santa ' s Reindeer! The British Rockers, a very talented band, made the night even more enjoyable. 50 inter Wonderland George Mac Arthur and Laurie Adams are picking the Hey, Diane, are you looking for someone? ATHLETICS Football Sparked by the worthy finish of the 1967 season, the Norton High football team looked forward to another promising season in the Tri-Valley League. Much speculation had been made about the fate of the three year old team which had lost nine men on Graduation Day. Preparation for the 1968 season began one week before school started, at Camp Burgess, on Cape Cod. During that week, the gridiron squad went through much effort to get itself into condition for the up- coming season. The league opener was with Holliston. The Pan- thers were seeking revenge for the 7-6 upset loss handed to -them by the ' 67 Lancers. Holliston drew first blood, but Bob Adams came back to give Norton a 7-6 halftime lead. Norton was contained in the third quarter, but a 21 yard right sweep by Panther Mark Bushnell dissolved the Lancer hold. The fight- ing Lancers came right back when Doug Reeves sprinted past three tacklers for 54 yards and a Norton score. The game was not over, as late in the last quarter, an Adams pass aimed for Tim McEndy was picked off and run back for a score, handing the Purple and White its first loss of the season. The Lancers were favored in the match to take place against the Hillers from Hopkinton. Norton was forced to come from behind on two occasions to battle for the 14-14 tie. Again, the opponent scored first. Midway into the second quarter, Tri- captain Dan Gefis broke through the line to block a punt and set up Norton for a score on the Hop- kinton 14. A pass to McEndy put Norton on the three, where Tri-captain Adams went over for the score. Early in the second half, Gefis stymied the Hiller offense by downing its punter in the end zone to tie the game at 8. Hopkinton went ahead early in the last quarter, but the Norton offense, unhampered by the cold weather, was able to muster a score with a minute and a half left, after a pass to Rick Silvia and a ground drive put Norton on the one, where Adams went over for the score. The placement by Bill Reay fell short of the uprights and Norton settled for a tie. The valiant Lancers spent the next week preparing for the game against the defending champions, Med- field. The largest crowd in Norton history turned out on the pleasant Saturday afternoon to witness the battle. There had been talk that Norton had a sur- prise for the Mustangs. On Norton ' s first play from scrimmage, Adams hurled an aerial to Reeves, who was uncovered by Medfield defenders and gained 47 yards. Norton was unable to tally until the last quarter, when a fumble was recovered on the visitor ' s 35, where Adams swept off right end for a score. The conversion pass to McEndy was complete, but the Mustangs proved too strong, as the Lancers sus- tained a 32-8 loss. Norton had now been picked as underdog for the game to take place at Millis. The Lancers were look- ing for their first victory in four starts with one tie, but could not find it in Mohawkland where the Purple and White went down by a score of 24-14. Norton started a three week home stand with a duel with the club from Martha ' s Vineyard. The Bartekmen scored first, and were able to click to- gether its first win of the season, by a 28-0 margin. The Lancers had to develop their defense in prep- aration for the game against Dover-Sherborn. With help from Ken Allen, Mike Yarusites, and Larry Lapointe, the Norton defense held the strong Raiders to a 14-14 tie entering the final quarter. Dover received a game deciding break, when a punt to Doug Reeves proved to be too hot to handle, and the resulting fumble allowed Dover to score with less than a minufe left. Norton was losing personnel due to injuries during the interim before the Dighton-Rehoboth game. The muddy field made play difficult, but the Lancers were able to host a 21-0 halftime lead. The Falcons came back, and with the final seconds ticking off, while holding a slim 21-18 lead, the Norton grid was trapped deep in its own territory. Adams was finally downed in the end zone for a safety, but the final gun sounded and Norton had chalked up another victory. Medway was the site of the last away game of the season. Norton never had a chance to score, as Medway proved too overwhelming and walked away with a 32-0 score. Turkey day came with much excitement. A pep rally fired up the Norton spirits. 800 spectators saw some Norton changes. Art Bouchard, who had been sidelined for most of the season with a shoulder injury, returned to his end slot. Bob Adams, who ran the Lancers from the quarterbacking position, had now moved to halfback, with Sophomore Wayne Reay calling the signals. Norton started off in the first quarter when from the Bellingham 48, three first downs brought the Lancers to the 8 where Adams ran a sweep right to hit paydirt. Norton ' s defense with the aid of Rick Wynn and Larry La- pointe, did not allow the Blackhawks to forge deeper than the Norton 39 during the first half. Bellingham fumbled on the kick to begin the second half, and Norton recovered. Reay initiated a reverse handoff to Adams, who passed to Bouchard, good for 41 yards and another score. The conversion by Adams was good, giving Norton a 14-0 lead. A quick four downs had Bellingham surrender the ball, where the Lancer line forged to within one yard of the goal line, and Adams went oyer for the score. Kevin Mahoney pulled in the conversion points, and left Norton victorious, 22-0, and closing out the Lancer ' s season record at 3-5-1. The record of the club hardly depicts the season that was turned in. The Lancers of Norton High have now been added to the list of strong teams in the Tri-Valley League. Bob Adams was tied for top scorer in the Attleboro Sun District, and many Nor- ton players entered their marks in area All-Star teams. In the 1968 Season, Norton broke quickly winning seven of its first eight outings. Then the Lancers dropped two games in a row to Hopedale and to Millis. At this time Nor- ton ' s Championship hopes looked bleak. However, the Never say die Lancers ral- lied at season ' s end to beat Millis for the division lead. On to the League Championship! The win was on the line between Norton and Hope- dale, and the Lancers were not to be denied! Led by most valuable player Captain Mike Wynn, the brilliant pitching of Ken Allen and timely hitting by Rick Silvia, Norton beat Hopedale with the final score of: Nor- ton 3. Hopedale 0. To raise the money they spon- sor such events as Cake Sales, a Car Wa?h and Spaghetti Suppers. Fortunately, one experience that we have had in school and will continue having, is meeting people. Thus, we have learned that People who need people are the luckiest People in the world!
