Beginning with the launching, the rocket, equipped with its nec- essary boosters, is propelled into space. With each successive stage, the rocket loses a booster but gains the power to function more independently. Finally, with the detachment of the last booster the rocket is left unaided to pursue its course. We, the Seniors of Norton High School, compare our sojourn toward graduation and our individual fu- tures, to the journey of a rocket into space. As the booster of a rocket supplies the necessary impetus to project it into space, the active influences of our school life provide us with the knowledge and experience to project ourselves into the future. DEDICATION MR. We shall always remember your unselfish and spirited loyalty as an integral part of our life at Norton High School. 4 IN RECOGNITION FABIAN ' BACHRACH PRESIDENT JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY May 29, 1917— November 22. 1963 Those who came before us made certain that this country rode the first waves of the Industrial Revolution, the first waves of modern invention and the first wave of nuclear power, and this generation does not intend to flounder in the backwash of the coming age of space. We mean to be a part of it. We have vowed that we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace . . . We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. TIME. September 21. 1962 5 SUPERINTENDENT ' S MESSAGE In the book of Proverbs (4:7) there appears this comment: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom. This observation is as true today as it was in the age of the early Israelites. We all recognize the importance of wisdom and the necessity for acquiring as much of it as possible if we are to lead successful and happy lives. Your teachers have done everything possible to pro- vide you with the tools and skills necessary for acquir- ing knowledge. It is up to you to take with you from your school years the habits of study and learning which are necessary to further acquire wisdom. Do not let graduation mark the end. but really the beginning, of vour education. Education is a continuing process. Do not stop this important task in the middle: see it all the way through. But for you young peo- ple just leaving high school, the greatest need for you is that you may be aware of the space that you are occupying right now, here on earth, and what you can do to improve it. Each class put on dances and at least one assembly in the school year. The juniors, beginning in September, start to plan for the biggest social event of the school year, the Junior-Senior Prom. By June, the theme has been fully developed into a major spectacular, which has taken nine months of hard work. For the past two years, the sophomores have sponsored the I.ancer Bowl. Two members of each class are elected by the department heads. The seniors and freshmen oppose the juniors and sophomores. Trophies are awarded to the individual members of the winning team. The freshman class, joining the ranks of the high school as the younger set, are fast to learn the ways of the upperclassmen. At present, this class is the biggest class in Norton High School with 125 members. Without the support of the underclassmen many of the school ' s activities would not be successful. Sears. 54 STUDENT COUNCIL The function of Norton High School ' s Council is to be the governing body of the school and to make the school a better one. Each Fall the Problems of Democ- racy classes sponsor the two po- litical parties and each party holds a convention to which students may attend, but attend only one. After the primaries there is a general convention where the can- didates face each other and stu- dents get a chance to listen to all the candidates ' campaign prom- ises. Voting is done soon after so that the newly elected officers can get to work. Many new projects, including the selling of seasonal basketball tickets and a hootenany were suc- cessfully carried out by Student Council, headed this year by Sandra Facey. Grund. 56 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Norton Chapter of the Na- tional Honor Society was founded nine years ago in hope that it would inspire love and desire for scholarship in the student body. The Society recognizes outstand- ing students on the basis of their character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Sophomores are in- ducted as probationary members, and juniors and seniors as per- manent members. This year many functions were presented by the Society. After the second marking term, there was an Honors Recognition Social where all students who had been on the honor roll for the two mark- ing terms, were invited to attend. Each year the club presents two or three plays, under the direction of Mr. Homer Paulus, (Advisor). The club has a constitution and bylaws and goes to view other plays. Keene. 62 KIND LADY On February 28, 1964, Kind Lady, under the di- rection of Mr. Homer Paulus, was presented in the high school auditorium. Kind Lady was a drama which explored the use of in- sanity in the minds of peo- ple. In the play, a respectable, kind lady is taken advantage of by a supposedly hard work- ing artist. The development of plot was excellent, and the conclusion was one of sur- prise. Everyone was enter- tained by this performance. Membership in the Pep Club is open to all those stu- dents who wish to have an active part in inspiring school enthusiasm. The Pep Club, under the leadership of Miss V. O ' Hearne, Miss M. Fortune, Mr. L. Tedeschi, and Mr. W. Precourt, has been very suc- cessful this year in promoting school spirit. By organizing Pep Rallies, and providing transportation to the out-of- town basketball games, the club has increased the attend- ance at the games and rallied the students ' support of their team. All members of the club were required to buy season- al basketball tickets and sweat shirts. Candy was sold by the members at the home games as a means of raising funds to support the club ' s activi- ties. L Johnson. 71 NORTON HIGH SCHOOL BAND The Norton High School Lancer Band is very active during the school year. Under the able direction of Mr. Frank Mon- tesanti, the Band rehearses daily and performs not only in parades but also at many school assemblies. The Band has also done quite well at several competitions sponsored by the state Music Educators ' Association, and, this year, as a special honor, Norton has been selected to host the annual Southeast Music Festival in May. The Band Parents Organization is quite active and last year, with aid from the Boosters ' Club, pur- chased beautiful new uniforms. Reynolds, G. MacLeod, N. Lopes. 80 VARSITY BASKETBALL This year, Coach Norton ' s Lancers had one of their finest seasons in the Tri-County League. Spurred by the avid support of their schoolmates and the townspeople of Norton, the skilled members of our varsity displayed terrific ability and drive in their desire to Lead Division II of the league. On December 15, the Lancers opened their season with a non-league double-overtime victory over Dighton- Rehoboth. This game gave us but a glimpse of what our boys could do, which they promptly showed us in their first league win of the season over defending champion Hopedale. After our next victory over Blackstone, our high-scoring trio of Cliff Reynolds, Bob Angus, and Joe Lynch began to receive much publicity. In a rough game during Christmas vacation, we dropped a non-league decision to North Attleboro. This loss ended our undefeated streak, but the Lancers moved forward to the biggest test of the season thus far; high-scoring Nip- muc Regional. We won this game and went on to beat the Norfolk Aggies. Next, the Lancers ran up against the tough Bellingham Blackhawks, and we dropped a close, hard game to this team which was eventually to threaten and finally take over our league supremacy. The Lancers continued to coast along the road of victory during the time in which we met the schools in Di- vision I of our league. In quick succession, we won games with Millis, Division I leader Dover-Sherborn, Hollis- ton, Medfield, Medway, and Hopkinton. Back in our own division once more, we soon claimed a thrilling victory over Norfolk. It was during this exciting game that Cliff Reynolds scored 44 points, thus breaking Lancer Henry Porter ' s 1960 record of 42 points, and the Tri-County league record of 43 points, previously held by Norfolk ' s Jim McGonigle. This game also marked the return of Joe Lynch, wbo had been side-lined since the Medfield game, during which he suffered a broken nose. Finally, the Norfolk win qualified us for the preliminary rounds of the Tech Tourney. Because of illness and injury among our starting players, the Lancers dropped their next game to Nipmuc. This loss caused us to automatically relinquish our first place position in Division II to Bellingham. However, we were only one-half a game behind the Blackhawks, and we were determined to fight to regain and keep our position as league leaders. This we did with a resounding victory over Blackstone and a close win over Hope- dale. Because Hopedale had beaten Bellingham, our win over Hopedale tied us with Bellingham for first place in Division II. As a result, our last game of the season, a home encounter with the blackhawks, became the real test to see who was going to lead our division for 1964. The game was a closely-fought battle and a well-bal- anced attack on Bellingham ' s account; the Lancers dropped this heart-breaking decision to the team which fi- nally possessed the first place crown. Following the end of our league schedule, the Lancers proceeded to prepare for Tech Tourney action. With a huge following and spirited hope, the team traveled to Chelmsford on March 3, where we met the Ipswich varsity. Norton played an excellent game in the first half, but gradually lost its sharp attack, and thus relin- quished the game by a 74-57 score. This marked the final competitive appearance of this year ' s Lancers. A bright light at the end of the season was the All-Star Game in Attleboro, when our division beat Division I in a play-off game. We were also very proud and happy to see our favorite three, Joe, Cliff, and Bob, receive trophies as outstanding players. The junior varsity, coached by Mr. Al Nuttall, had a very successful season of 10 wins and 6 losses in league play, and an overall record of 10 wins and 8 losses. High scorer for the season was sophomore Dave Burbank, followed by junior Pat Cassidy. The jayvee team will lose two fine players when juniors Mike Bartley and Pat Cassidy move up to next year ' s varsity. With all other players from this season returning and with some good junior high school prospects, Coach Nuttall should expect the same fine team which he had this year. This year, members were: seniors, Carol Rei, Captain, Sandra Camara, Donna Lee Collins, Kir- sten Dahlman, Creta Knox, and Maryrose Silvia. Juniors were Sandra Bologna, and freshman members were Sharon Melanson and Marcia Collins. The Lancer cheer- leaders placed second in the Tri-County League cheering tournament. Gonsalves. 91 VARSITY With the combined efforts of talented catcher Bob Angus, pitchers Eddie Bouchard and Charlie Trabucco, and first-baseman Richie Marston, Coach Robert Ford expects a highly successful season for this year ' s Varsity Baseball Team. Also contributing to the team ' s success in its division of the Tri-County League will be the efforts of underclassmen Steve Prosky, Dave Burbank, and John Trainor. The team ' s schedule of games includes a full ros- ter of both league games and encounters with in- dependent teams. The outcome of these games will determine Norton ' s participation in future tourna- ment play. The junior varsity, coached by Mr. Larry Tedes- chi, will enter a semi-league schedule for the first time this year. Above: Junior Bob Angus, an outstanding hitter and star catcher. 93 TRACK This season, Norton ' s Track Team will meet with various independent and Tri- County League teams in a number of com- petitions. All of these meets will he held at other schools since Norton is not equip- ped with the proper cinder track. Coach Ralph Rubin will be counting on the experience of Jack Howard who is cap- tain this year, plus the skill of Adrian Dunlop and Ronnie Murray in the 100 and 440-yard dashes. The team ' s high jumpers include Senior Joe Lynch and Sophomore John Young who will be returning to ac- tion next year as the team ' s captain. Under the coaching skill of Ralph Rubin, this year ' s Cross Country Team greatly improved its former record of 1-6 while proudly securing an 8-4 seasonal record in the Tri-County League. The ex- perience of returning captain Jack Howard combined v ith the valuable talent of distance runner John Young and up- and-coming Adrian Dunlop. formed a strong nucleus around which the success of the team revolved. Unfortu- nately, Joe Lynch, one of the team ' s leading runners was side-lined due to an extended illness. The All League Meet was held this year for the first time at Norton and the event proved to be very successful. Reynolds (Manager). 96 1963 JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM The annual Junior-Senior Prom is the biggest social event in our school year. Every year, the Juniors decorate the cafe- teria with the theme of the Prom. This year, co-chairmen, Donna Lee Collins and Kirsten Dahlman spent much time plan- ning the Prom, Cherry Blos- som Time. It was depicted by several cherry trees and by a view of Washington, D. C. The walls of the cafeteria were en- tirely covered with paper, on which were drawings of such buildings as the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The Jun- iors built a replica of the Wash- ington Monument and its pool, and placed it outside the cafe- teria. At an appointed time, a fountain of water was turned on. The grand march and the crowning of the queen were the highlights of the Prom. Punch and cookies served by faculty members and parents, were the refreshments after the grand march. Chaperones, parents, faculty members, and students enjoyed the music of Ed Lind- strom ' s Orchestra. The night of June 8, 1963 passed quickly and blissfully for all who at- tended. FALL DANCE The theme, Autumn Leaves was portrayed by leaves and crepe paper in the seasonal colors and a scarecrow. Music for dancing was provided by the Johnson Boys and by numer- ous popular records. This dance offered an oppor- tunity for the newcomers to re- ceive a warm welcome from the other students and the faculty. At the end of three short hours, it was time to say good-bye to our friends, old and new, and hello to the beginning of another new year. The concert consisted of a Christmas operetta, The Christmas Story, written espe- cially for Mr. and Mrs. Frank Montesanti by Philip Stein. The musi- cal portions of the con- cert were under the di- rection of Mr. and Mrs. Montesanti, while Miss Priscilla Hutchinson and Miss Maxine Fortune were in charge of. scen- ery and choreography, respectively.
