SOJOURN an NORTON HIGH SCHOOL NORTON, MASSACHUSETTS. ADVISOR, MISS GRACE B. KIERNAN CONTENTS Title Page 1 Contents 2 Foreword 3 Dedication 4 Superintendent ' s Message 5 Principal ' s Message 6 Faculty 7 Seniors 13 Senior Scenes 28 Underclassnnen 33 Classes 47 Organizations 51 Athletics 73 Activities 87 Advertisennents 99 2 FOREWORD As we approached graduation, we paused to reflect upon the events of our high school days. An hour-glass could perhaps illustrate the tinne which seemed to pass so slowly at first, but when graduation finally ap- proached, we realized that the time had actually passed quickly. We remembered the beginning of our first day as Seniors, as if it were yesterday. We quickly adjusted to our new status and the hard work in- volved. We thought that our previous three years were carefree and easy compared to our last year of work. As the year passed, we fulfilled our duties as club officers and active club members with great pleasure and pride. Some of us discovered the glory of winning sports trophies or mere- ly acting as a member of a hard-playing team. We completed our high school years by attending the formal Prom; and, finally, we did reach the end— graduation. Graduation was not really the end, but a climax in our lives, as it will be for all future graduating classes. The sands of time will continue to run —slowly at first— too quickly at graduation tim e— and then, there will always be the next class to ponder the mysteries of time. DEDICATION Character is like a free, and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it} the tree is the real thing. We, the members of the Class of 1963, dedicate the Sojourn to Mrs. Lucille Zwicker. Your willingness to help and to guide us and your co-operation in all our affairs has shown us the value of a faithful advisor. You have advised us during all four years, and you have shown us the way to a life of our own choosing. With your guidance in the making of our characters, we move on to the future. SUPERINTENDENT ' S MESSAGE You leave here to seek your fortune ... to become rich! It is well first to raise the question what constitutes richness? Ten or twenty years from now some of the poorest of you will have money . . . some of the richest none. What, then, constitutes wealth? For one thing, a good home . . . fellowship ruled by love . . . where you are loved and can love in the best sense of that term. A second item is our friends who stand by us in times ot prosperity and adversity. Friends who love us for what we are, despite our faults. A third item of wealth is useful work. If you can be of use in the world, leave it a little better than you found it, you shall have been rich. Finally, the greatest wealth is your belief . . . your church. It is this that gives meaning to all else. As you leave to seek your fortune ... to become rich, may I wish you success and richness of life. PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE Although other Seniors will come to Norton High School just as there have been others in the past, your contribution of happy service, cheerful help, and en- thusiasm has always been unique. I hope that from your experiences here you have learned that— only in giving to others can you find true happiness. 6 NOR SCHOOL GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT Pictured above: MRS. After high-scoring sen- ior, Roger Ramsey, sustained an injury which prevented his playing for four weeks, the scoring load fell for the most part to Sophomores, Cliff Reynolds and Bob An- gus, and junior, Joe Lynch. Ramsey had been second in the area scoring department prior to his injuries. The members of the team were: (seniors) Captain Roger Ramsey, John Willis, Steve Wood, Ed Whitcomb; (jun- iors) Charlie Trabucco, Jack Howard, Joe Lynch; (sopho- mores) Cliff Reynolds, Bob Angus, Paul Rich, Jack Train- or; (freshmen) David Brown and Steve Prosky. Norton came in third in Division II of the Tri-County League behind Hopedale and Bellingham. With a 12-4 record in league play, the Lancers were unsuccessful in tournament competition, losing to Provincetown in the Bay State (49-46), and to Bourne in the Tech Tourna- ment (52-47). An opposing basket at a crucial point in the game often brings violent screams from the cheerers. Pictured above is Joe Lynch just as he catches that important rebound. 77 CHEERLEADERS DONNA LEE CAPTAIN-SANDY Pictured above is head-cheerleader Sandy Camara with the other girls, leading the cheers in an exciting part of a bas- ketball game. The members of this year ' s cheering squad were: juniors, Sandra Camara, Captain; Cheryl Keifer, Creta Knox, Mary Rose Sylvia, Kirsten Dahl- man, Donna Lee Collins, and Carol Rei. Sopho- more members of the team were: Susan Brown and Sandra Bologna. These girls won their po- sitions in the faculty-judged try-outs last fall, and after many practice sessions, they became the basketball team ' s strongest supporters, by lead- ing the crowds in cheers for various basketball games, league and tournament play. The cheer- leaders themselves also participated in cheering tournaments, after the season was over. SANDY 78 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The junior Varsity basketball team is considered to be the training team for the future Varsity basketball players. This year the team was coached by Mr. Albert Nuttall. A new captain of the squad was chosen for each game. The team won 16 and lost 6 games. Pictured above are the members of the Junior Varsity basketball team. They are, left to right, First row: W. Martin, M. Bartley, L. Conners, R. Lambert, L. Raymond, D. Brown, K. Dahlman, J. Young, R. JUNIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS The junior high school cheering squad is made up of girls from the Seventh and Eighth grades. Each girl must maintain a high school standing in order to be on the cheering squad. The cheerleaders are advised and instructed by Miss Alma Andersson. Pictured above are the junior high school cheerleaders. They are, left to right: L. Knox, A. Franklin, M. Melsbach, M. Collins, M. Lacomb, S. Lynch, S. SEVENTH GRADE TEAM The Seventh grade team fared a little better than the Eighth grade team. They should make a good team next year. Pictured above are the members of the Seventh grade team. They are, left to right. First row: G. Gilson, R. Goddard, J. Chapuf, A. Rich; Second row: S. Jackson, J. Kosinsky, D. Heneon, R. Pedro, Phillip Norton (coach); Third row: P. Hassey, D. Nason, L. Backstrom, P. Murphy, R. Holoway. 80 THE VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM Norton expects to have one of the best Baseball teams in its history this year. Last year ' s team is still intact except for Jim Watson, who graduated. Coach Ford hopes to weld together a strong team from last year ' s hold-ons and some outstanding freshmen from last year ' s successful freshman team. Coach Ford ex- pects spectacular performances from seniors: John Zaccardi, John Willis, and Roger Ramsey, and from un- derclassmen: Bob Angus, Ed Bouchard, Charlie Trab- ucco, and Richard AAarston. Last year, Norton nearly placed first in its division of the Tri-County League and this year. Coach Ford hopes for a championship season. The team will cer- tainly be a factor in 1963 ' s Massachusetts pennant race. Pictured above is Mr. J. Robert Ford, the team ' s coach. Pictured above are the members of the varsity Baseball team. They are, left to right: First row: B. Angus, J. Zaccardi, J. Willis, R. Ramsey, S. Wood, R. Marston, Mr. J. Robert Ford (coach); Second row: C. Trabucco, C. Reynolds, E. Bouchard, C. Lynch, I. Dunlop (Captain); A. Dunlop, W. Alston (Manager); C. Bowen; Second row: Mr. C. Haller (Coach); C. Metzger, J. Howard, M. Chadwick, G. Carlson, D. Shaw; Third row: E. Witcombe, P. Holbrok, H. Jennings, J. Grund, G. Peabody, K. Dahlman, L. Powel. Last year ' s track team did quite well, :onsidering that most of the opposing teams came from larger schools. This year the back-bone of the team con- sists of seniors, Ian Dunlop and Dennis Shaw. The outcome of the team de- pends upon Ian, Dennis and several under-class distance runners. Coach Haller will be watching the freshman milers, who did well on the Cross- country team. The major problem of the track team is not having a proper cinder track. Since the team has no track no home meets will be scheduled. Pictured above are three under-classmen runners. They are, left to right: A. Dunlop, J. Lynch, K. Dahlman. 83 Pictured left is Ian Dunlop, Captain of the Varsity track team this year. Ian is a senior and has been a member of the varsity track squad since his eighth grade year. As of his Junior year, Ian holds the school records for the 100 and 220 yard dashes and he usually accounts for 1 1 to T3 points in the team ' s total score. This year the ace sprinter hopes to break his old records in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Pictured right is the track team ' s star shot-putter Dennis Shaw. Dennis is a senior this year and has served the track team for five years. Dennis holds the school records for the shot-put and discus. This year, Dennis is expected to break his old records by quite a distance. Many times Dennis has helped the team in a tight spot by gaining 10 points in the shot-put and discus events and by running part of the 880 yard relay. 84 CROSS COUNTRY The otherwise blockbuster (1-6) cross-country season was brightened only by the hopes for the future which glinnmered. The 1963 cross-country team will see only John Willis gone, while letter- nnen Jack Howard, Joe Lynch, Karl Dahlman, Adrian Dunlop, George Gilchrist, Bill Stares and a host of promising Freshmen return. Lynch was the team ' s leading runner in 1962, and, unless another back injury benches him, he will continue his high-scoring record. In future years. Freshmen will form a strong nucleus for the team. Captain Jack Howard drives his teammates to greater efforts by his excellent example. Pictured above is Captain Jack Howard of the 1962-63 Cross- Country team. Jack is a Junior who will return to next year ' s team. Pictured above is the Cross-Counfry team in warm-up suits. Reynolds, G. Gil- christ, P. Cassidy, J. Willis, K. Dahlman. 85 ACTIVITIES SENIOR CLASS PLAY Elizabeth is the hard-taxed center of an irritating household. Her husband is a dullard; one of her daughters is hysterically In love with a cynical playboy; the other is very stridently precocious. There ' s a selfish old mother who hoards antiques and a fussy father-in-law who chases fires, and a nosey house guest and a bossy cook. Most of these people are worse than usual because they ' re panting after a legacy that Elizabeth has received. Having reached the breaking point, Elizabeth contracts a nice case of amnesia, in which twenty years are blotted out and she is a girl again. This enables her not only to indulge in caprices like taking up with her daughter ' s young rpan, but also to tell all the members of the family what she thinks of them. All these doings show results that promise well for the future of Elizabeth and her family. Mr. Homer Paulus directed the play.
