It is a journey, a sojourn which either marks the end of our acquiring of scholarly material, or a sojourn which will lead us to institu- tions of higher learning. With this thought in mind, we, the editors of the 1962 SO- JOURN, have chosen as our theme A Journey Through Norton High School. We have, through the use of pictures, recalled the most memorable scenes of school life to mind — things that we took for granted, and yet, we would be inclined to forget; things that contributed in a small way to the molding of our lives; and things that distinguished us as individuals. In the future, when we might wish to review the past, and thumb through its pages, we sincerely hope that this book will remind the reader of the enjoyable years spent at Norton High School, of a period of profitable training, and of the Senior Class of 1962. MAHONEY Superintendent of Norton Public Schools The rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a man ' s foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher. Through the past years, you have helped us climb the ladder of knowledge. Under your ever-willing guidance, we have reached the end of four years of activity and learning. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Norton Chapter of the National Honor Society was founded seven years ago in the hope that the exist- ance of such a society would inspire love and desire for scholarship in the student body. Since then, sixty- one girls and nine boys have been inducted into full membership. The Honor Society is under the direction of Charlotte Dill, President; Mary Mendes, Vice-president; Marcia Ford, Secretary; Daniel Malloy, Treasurer; and Mrs. Jean Findlater, Advisor. Three major activities were planned and executed. On April 13, a home-coming day for twenty-five Norton High School graduates was created. These graduates discussed their respective schools; and high school students were afforded the opportunity to learn more about college life. The National Honor Society entertains high school students at an honor social. On February 13, forty-eight classmen were cited at an Honors Recognition Social for having made the honor roll both marking terms. Mr. Henri Yelle and Dr. William Mahoney praised the society members. Mr. Robert Binswanger of Harvard who has traveled extensively in Russia, lectured on Russia ' s educational system, and the importance of the Russian honor society. Refreshments and a social hour followed. Society members appeared for the first time in their emblem-clad, navy blue blazers. On March 16, the annual induction was held; all newly-elected candidates wore royal-blue robes with white collars. The function of the group is to gain an understanding of the theater, its meaning, and its people. Scherer. 65 LATIN CLUB Norton High ' s Latin Club is open to all students who are taking Latin presently, or who have taken it previously. Four main functions are held by the Latin Club every year: the Latin Breakfast; the In- itiation, at which all Freshmen are required to un- dergo various stunts; the Slave Sale, where upper- classmen may buy Freshmen to carry their books for the following week; and the Roman Wedding or Funeral, which are held alternately each spring. This year ' s club was honored by Station WPRO- TV which spotlighted the Latin Breakfast during the evening news program. GLEE CLUB In addition to the numerous assemblies and concerts at which the Mixed Chorus appeared, they also presented for the first time, a Chorus dance. The Girls ' Glee Club is shown during their performance at the annual Christmas Pageant. 73 NORTON HIGH This year has proved to be the most successful for the Norton High School Band, which is under the excellent direction of Mr. Frank Montesanti. The group, led by the Majorettes, marched in Norton ' s 250th Celebration, and then gave a concert for the townspeople. They also partici- pated in the school ' s Christmas Pageant, providing all music for the production. Many assemblies, including the National Honor Society Induction, have been provided with music by the group. This year the band has acted as a functioning organiza- tion with John Waite as President; William Alston as Vice- President; William Martin as Treasurer; and, Betsy Bur- bank as Secretary. Rehearsals are held daily. The band also has a bowling team, which competes every Friday. The school is greatly indebted to Mr. Montesanti, for the great success he has brought to the band, in such a short time; and, we are looking forward to more fine music. MR. Membership in this organization is strictly governed by set scholastic recjuirements, and extremely high standards of character, citizenship, cooperation and leadership. The group took several bicycle trips this year, when the weather permitted, and learned of their classmates ' hobbies during their periodical meeting. James. 78 15 1 1 79 VARSITY The 1961-1962 Varsity Basketball Team was excellently coached by Mr. Philip Norton. Victories were scored in eleven of the twenty games played in the Tri-County League, and Norton ' s team came the closest to winning against Bellingham ' s undefeated team — losing by two points. Led by Co-Captains Jimmy Watson, and Roger Ramsey, the group finished fifth in the League. Jimmy, who has been of the varsity for his four high school years, was elected to the All-Sfar Team in 1961 and in 1962. In his sophomore year he played on Norton ' s only undefeated team. This year was especially success- ful for Jimmy, as is shown by his 15.4 average, and his 254 point total. Prospects for a successful season next year are good. Keeping both eyes on the b.Ul, Kenny S.intoro moves in to c;ipture the b.ill for the L.incers. 83 CHEERLEADERS KIRSTEN DAHLMAN HEAD CHEERLEADER— CAROL REI LOIS HANLEY The 196I-I962 cheerleaders have done an excellent job, despite the fact that only one member of the present squad had previously been a regular. All seven girls have done extensive practicing, and have added effective gymnastic stunts to the cheers. The school is extremely proud of the good sportsmanship shown by the squad, and the team has appreciated their constant support. CRETA KNOX 84 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity Basketball Team was coached this year, by Mr. J. Robert I ' ord. The team scored victories in nine out of the seventeen games played. Scherer. 85 SEVENTH GRADE BASKETBALL The Seventh Grade Basketball Team, under the direction of Mr. Albert Nuttall, won five games this year, and lost three. JUNIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS The Junior High Cheerleaders were a new addition to the seventh and eighth grade basketball teams this year. Under the direction of Miss Diana Berberian the seven girls have learned and perfected the cheers used by the high school cheer- leaders. The group has added the liveliness and color, which is characteristic of varsity games, to the junior high school competition. Ravello. 86 BASEBALL The 1962 Norton High School Baseball Team was un- der the direction of Mr. J. Robert Ford, and the team was a member of the Tri-County League. The group played each team in our division once, and each team out of our division twice. Considering the fact that the boys were inexperienced, they have done very well. Randy O ' Connor, John Willis, and Richard Marsden, newcomers to the team, played regulars. Pitcher for the team was left-handed Roger Ramsey; and, catcher was Kenny Santoro, who played for his fourth year on the varsity team. MR. J. Robert Ford, Coach. 87 TRACK AND CROSS-COUNTRY The 1961-62 Track and Cross-Country teams were coached by Mr. Charles R. Haller. This year ' s team was fortunate in having several good sprinters. Arthur Lane, the team ' s best runner, was Captain of Cross- Country and Co-Captain of the Track Team. He set a school record in Cross-Country at one of the sev- eral meets with area schools, received a trophy for finishing first locally at Norton ' s 250th Celebration Track and Field Day, and won a seventh place medal in class D at the State Cross-Country Meet. William Alston, also Co-Captain of the Track Team, was a good runner. Mr. Haller said that prospects seem especially good for a very successful 1962-63 season. MR. CHARLES R. HALLER, Coach. Holbrook (manager). 90 JUNIOR-SEN The Junior-Senior Prom, sponsored by the Junior Class, was held on June 10, 1961. In keeping with tradition, the dance commenced with a grand march, followed later by the crowning of a queen. The orchestra for the evening was Robert St. Amour and the Serenaders. Queen of the 1961 Prom was Miss Patricia Fitzgerald. Silver Bells was the theme of this year ' s dance, which is one of the most popular events of the school year. Silver Bells, Christmas trees, and murals carried out the theme of this annual, semi-formal event, which was enjoyed by all who attended. AS DANCE Queen of the Christmas Dance, Silver Bells, as chosen by the chaperones, was Geraldinc Monty. CHRISTMAS The annual Christmas Pageant was pre- sented on December 21, 1961, at 8:00 p.m. Under the excellent direction of Miss Judith Walker, Miss Carol Knox, and Miss Alma Andersson, students in the Elementary and the High School took part in the program which was presented almost entirely in mu- sic. Members of the cast were accompanied by the music of the High School Band and the Girls ' Glee Club, which made its first appearance. (Below): Making their first appearance as a separate organization is the Girls ' Glee Club being directed by Miss Judith Walker, Head of the Vocal Music program in Norton schools. 102 PAGEANT The theme of the Christmas Pageant was taken from the production The Nutcraclcer Suite. The story tells of toys placed under the traditional evergreen which suddenly be- come very much alive. The Nutcracker Prince, as played by Michael Danforth, was accompanied by several others, including toy soldiers, mice, and gingerbread men. This was the first year that the Pageant was pre- sented in music, and the large audience ex- pressed their enthusiasm for this new type of program. (Below): The entire cast assembles to take a final bow for a job well done. 1 L f 1 ' 1 4 103 SENIOR CLASS PLAY On March 2, 1962, the senior class presented its annual play. Lock, Stock, and Lipstick was the story of Pembroke High School, and the events that took place within, when a new, young guidance counselor arrived. The faculty, the students, and the janitorial staff of the school provided a sometimes hilarious background to the love affair between Jane Gardner, the new guidance counselor, and Peter Warren, the old guidance counselor, who rose to the position of principal. This three act comedy was under the excellent direction of Mr. Homer Paulus. Arrogant Mrs. Donley, as played by Peggy Ruskey, surprised the Larry Donley ' s antics turn to acts of retaliation as Miss Ent- school system with her bluntness. whistle accuses him of stealing two hundred dollars of yearbook money.
