I I NORTON PUBLIC LIBRAW NORTON, MASS. 02766 Norton, Massachusetts Published by the CLASS OF 1958 Advisor: GRACE B. KIERNAN I FOREWORD There are persons who are always talking about preparing for life. The best way to prepare for life is to begin to live. A school should not be a preparation; a school should be a life. Isolation from the world in order to prepare for the world ' s work is folly. You might as well take a boy out of the blacksmith shop in order to teach him blacksmithing. From the age of fourteen and upward the pupil should feel that he is doing something useful, not merely killing time; and so his work and his instruction should go right along hand in hand. CLASS HISTORY In ' 55, our group of 73 started the perilous trek into unknown territory. Mr. Homer Paulus and Mr. Lester Conners were hired as our guides. To keep us together, we elected Peter Yelle as our leader; John Crowe, next in command; Carol Ann Lajoie, recorder, to keep us in touch with the folks back home; and Sally Robbins, keeper of money and supplies. That year we were fresh and full of pep and started off with a one-act play, Among Us Girls, for anyone who was interested. We also held a dance at a local hall to add to our growing funds. At Christmas time, we put on a Christmas Pageant for the people in the community. In ' 56, we chose new leaders: John Crowe, head wagon master; Peter Yelle, second in command; Joan Hanley, recorder; and Marion Smith, keeper of the funds. Our number had, by this time, de- creased to 58 due to many seeking other adventures and some joining the Coyle Group. We rehired Mr. Paulus as a guide and acquired a new guide, Mr. Clare Carlson. To augment our funds, we held many social events, all quite successful. We held our Christmas Pageant again on the strength of its success the year before. This year, as in the others, our party was joined by a few new adventurers. The next year, we lost a few more passengers, reducing our number to 46. Peter Yelle was rein- stated as leader; Carol Ann Lajoie was made second in command; Joan Hanley and Marion Smith returned to their former offices. We kept our faithful Mr. Paulus and also hired Miss Emmeline Loud as a guide. Again, we presented our well-known Christmas Pageant for the local community. We held many social events, but our biggest success of the year was the Brom. After many months of planning, we selected Sunliner to Hawaii as our theme. During the final year of our sojourn, Mr. Conners rejoined Mr. Paulus and we kept the same lead- ers with the exception of Carol Ann Lajoie who was replaced by Joseph Willis. We held suppers, dances, skating parties, and presented a smash hit called, Truth On a Holiday. In February, having a surplus of funds, we took a week out of our tight schedule and visited our nation ' s capitol. On June 10th, after four work-filled and happy years, 39 of us reached our destination. The journey we had undertaken as a group had ended. Now, fortified by memorable experiences and strong friend- ships, we were ready for more hazardous trials, JOURNEY ' S END Together we stand, yet each alone, About to go our separate ways. Looking ahead with eagerness But remembering former days. We have journeyed so far, must travel more; Remember with thanks our school, my friends. We may or may not meet again Before our lengthy journey ends. Our high school career, like many things. Was valued too little, too late. We realize its true worth now And how it affects our fate. Let ' s have a toast for old time ' s sake; Let ' s take a cup o ' kindness yet. Though time may dim our memories. We will never quite forget. Marilyn Martin 6 YEARBOOK STAFF Left to right: M. The editors and staff with their advisor, Miss Kiernan, are to be congratulated on this enterprise. I am sure that the kind of work displayed here is representative of the best kind of co-operation. William M. Mahoney Superintendent of Schools PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE The publication of this Yearbook is a final school project of the Class of 1959. In the years to come, the pictures and contents will be of great enjoyment for they will recall memories with former classmates during some of the most carefree but valuable days of their lives. Many have already given thought to their future. Grad- uation is the time when old friends separate and approach their respective stations in life. Your education will become the basis of your accomplishment and prosperity. The automotive world requires a form of education which was formerly unknown and which you have had an opportun- ity to obtain. Prove your worth by qualifying in the open world, using to advantage what you have gained here. The faculty and school staff wish you success in your en- deavor. If you are willing to work both mentally and physi- cally you will merit the approbation of all in the world ' s arena. Charles S. Randall Principal MR. HENRY AMARAL A.B. English MRS.
