In the opening game of the season, Norhi downed the Blue Knights at Coeburn, 14-7. Stallard passed to Minor for the first touchdown, and Nard crossed the goal for the other score. J. Caruso kicked both extra points. Norhi fought the St, Paul Deacons a 0-0 deadlock in a hard fought game in rnud, ankle-deep. Afterwards, the team considered changing their name to the Mud-hogs . The Wise Indians overpowered the Norhi team 26-0. The Blue Knights eleven, in a return game on Tracy Field, edged out Norhi, 6-0. In la second meeeting, the St. Paul Deacons passed for two touchdowns and made a safety for a score of 14-6. Heldreth, havingintercepted a St. Paul pass, raced ninety- one yards for Norhi's lone score. In what proved to be the most exciting game of the season, the revengefuI 'Norhi eleven furiously battled a much favored Wise team, only to go down 14-6. Reed re- ceived a Wise punt and flashed 80 yards to score. In a tinal game, the tricky, well-coached East Stone Tigers stalled the Norton offensive and pushed across a score in the last 20 seconds of play, to defeat Norhi, 6-0. . EF MWA? In 1892, classes for the first seven grad:s were begun in a small' one-room building on the corner of Spruce and Tenth Streets. Here some of Norton's present leading residents learned the difficult art of reading, writing, and ciphering. Here they daydreamed, slept. and played. In 1895, lessons corresponding to those in our eighth and ninth grades were pondered and studied in an old storebuilding down- own,,until, during the same winter, a ire destroyed this classroom and drove the know- ledge-seeking boys and girls to share the one- room building with the smaller children. There classes were held as usual, with one teacher teaching in one end of the room, and one in the other. The first accredited high school graduates, having completed courses in English, mathe- matics, Latin, and history, received their diplomas in 1911. ' Later, the various sciences, physics, chem- istry, biology, and general science were added. Home Economics classes were taught in the basement of the Old Building from 1913 to 1919, then were discontinued until 1927, when they were resumed in the Cottage, which had been purchased by the School Board in 1920. In 1931, a commercial de- partment Was established. 'AS new courses were added and more pupils enrolled, more buildings were provided. By 1901, a frame two-story building containing four schoolrooms had been erected on the site where the high school building now stands. The up- per story was used for a Masonic Lodge room. The Old Building was con- structed about l907: the high school building, in 1921: and the Barn in 1924. Alumni of 'Norton 'High School 'are giving service tofthe nation: their va-rious occupations could not be named. Both men and women are serving in the armed forces of their country. The school has developed both in stature and in wis- dom. 1, Xu KFL11. 'x .. ' x 'i 4. ii' g' 1 ,ul ' a It will continue to develop in the years to come. With the reincarnation of Peace, its friends and pupils will build in beauty and in majesty, until Tomorrow will be a period marked by greater achievements than those of the past half century. 1945 0 BE WISE Buy at WISE HARDWARE AND FURNITURE COMPANY NeedFood?
