Under the training of Coach Stecker and Assistant Coach Lawson the boys proved to be a fast and scrappy team. Beginning the schedule on September 24. Norton met Honaker on Tracy Field and defeated them 26-6. Next came St. Paul, who proved another victim for the Ponies and Mules of the Norhi team, who played a brilliant game to win 19-6. On September 27, Norton played a splendid ball game to hold the larger Coeburn team, although losing 21-13. Again, as in 1939, Norton and East Stone Gap played to a 6-6 deadlock in one of the best defensive games participated in by the Norhi team. Next came Big Stone Gap, who defeated the Norhi squad by the close score of wr' 2-1 A Se 'Q' ae 'a ...mia CHE Keg H BOLLING, Fullback H. At Appalachia Norton again met with defeat by the score of 19-7. Norton, acting as host to Wise in a game played in honor of Knute Rockne, won by 20-13. In the first of their remaining two non-conference games Norton defeated Pennington Gap in a high-powered offensive battle 26-13. The Homecoming Game with Gate City was exciting from start to finish as Norton eked out a 12-8 victory. Norton had two All-County Boys, Captain Cabell Gannaway, halfback, who has made the All-County Team for three successive years, and William Blevins, guard, who by his consistently Hne playing, achieved this honor for the first time. We, the graduates of 1941, wish the team of 1941 the best of luck in the coming season. H , si ss E B. aim s gm :Fa ea is F Ea E amy, Wu? Resume Only two players on the girls' team, one guard and one forward-, had ever been in a game previous to this year. Perhaps this fact accounts for the team's failure to win a single game. However, the girls played well for their first experience and showed marked improvement by the end of the season. Drawing St. Paul girls for their opponents in the tournament, the Norhi lassies held them to a close game until the waning minutes of the last quarter, when the St. Paul sextette forged ahead. Since the girls' team was made up of iirst, second, and third year girls, all of them will be with the team next year. The 1942 team should be a winning team - a championship team, we hope. Norton Coeburn -- Norton Flat Gap -- Norton Flat Gap -- Resume With the smallest team in its history Norton was able to win 4 of the 16 scheduled games. Big Stone Gap and Coeburn went down under the Norhi shorties, while East Stone Gap, Appalachia, and Wise emerged victorious over the Norton team before the Christmas holidays. After the Christmas vacation, Norton lost to Pound, St. Paul, Appalachia, Nora, twice in order, before they were able to get back on their old form. The team took a close game from Big Stone Gap. Following this victory, the Norhi squad lost to East Stone Gap and Wise before once more trouncing Coeburn. In the last game before the tournament Norhi was smothered by Flat Gap. Norton drew Flat Gap for the tourna- ment and was defeated only 5 points by the same team, which had three days before beaten them by 25 points. Losing only two lettermen this year, Norton should have a good team next year. 1-45 SSM Nw ' Wi W 4' S ' ? ' . '-. - K 1 A LAL 67749 5, N r ' Q J- 1 - mfr W . -.
