During recent years research chemists have discovered that coal will yield an unlimited number of useful by-products. Because of this fact, it has been prophesied that in ten years coal will be too valuable to burn. ln Wise County, coal is such a common commodity that perhaps many of its people no longer realize their extreme good fortune in having a supply of the King of Resources which will, at the present rate of consumption, last at least lUUU years. Coal has a truly fascinating and romantic story centered about its mag- ical formation which began about 350 million years ago. At one time Wise County was a mere swamp. lts damp, sweltering cli- mate stimulated -the growth of luxuriant vegetation to such an extent that it sprang up even in the short period of one day. The plants were so matted and impenetrable that they would discourage even our most modern explor- ers. Violent storms occurred quite frequently. These storms were so de- structive that plants and giant trees were blown into the water. Rivers raged on the mountain sides. These swift torrents carried ton after ton of loose rock and dirt down upon the bountiful vegetation. This process continued until the plants were covered, not by one, but by several layers of dirt and rocks alternated with layers of vegetation. Thus we can see that the layers of vegetation had a great deal of pressure upon them. Because of this tre- mendous pressure, a chemical change resulted in the slowly decaying lay- ers of vegetation which produced the midnight black substance we today call coal. This period of coal formation continued forabout one hundred million years. Then a period of chaos possessed the earth. During this epoch the val- leys and mountains were formed but were shifted from one location to an- other until they came to their final resting places. The earth shrank in size because of a decided decrease in its temperature. The coal beds of some sections were raised, while others were lowered. Some of the precious beds were crushed and lost by the onslaught of the more highly developed rock formations. Fortunately, for the citizens of Wise County and the surround- Page 2 ing territory, our coal beds Were lifted bodily by the shifting rocks in the form of a block l25 miles long, 30 miles Wide, and 3 miles thick. This preser- vation seems to be an act of the Almighty for the protection and benefit of His darlings . When We consider the apparent premeditated preservation of this coal and our unmistakable good fortune in its having been formed, We thrill at the realization that the miner of Wise County is a laborer directly con- nected With the World of 350 mil-lion years ago. Wise County is primarily dependent upon its coal industry. The average annual payroll of the twenty-five mining operations, which to us appears in- dispensable, is about 35,031,443 and they do an annual business of 38,387,- 029. There Were, according to the l93O census, 12,597 men employed in all the industries of the County. Of this number the 5,625 miners required to rob the mountains of their coal, receive the enormous payroll just mentioned. The mine operators and promoters of dependent industries make it possible for the youth of Wise County to get a public school education by paying the largest portion of the taxes to the County. This is one of the few industries which allow so many people to share in the profits of the business. Having shown the extreme good fortune and the endless opportunities We enjoy from the presence of coal, the backbone of Wise County Industry, We, the Senior Class of Norton High School, in a true sense of appreciation, feel it appropriate to dedicate this Ninth Volume of TENDRILS to the King of Resources , COAL. About 340,000,000 tons of coal have al- ready been dug from these beds. We dig out about 3,000,000 tons more each year. All the beds together are estimated to contain 6,000,000,000 tons. Allowing a good deal for waste, we still have enough coal to last a thousand years at our pres- ent rate oi production. Therefore, the coal industry Should remain the pri- mary industry in Wise County for a lonq while. It has assisted with one assembly program and also rendered the commencement music for 1940. Not having a music department in our school, We are most fortunate in having Mrs. I. I. Porter to do this Work voluntarily. Mrs. Porter came to Norton in 1938 from Princeton, West Virginia, Where she had been a supervisor of music in the Princeton schools. ln addition to her supervision She directed the high school glee club and three junior choirs. Coal to the chemist is carbon, a key element in more than 500,000 known chemical sub- stances. 4 Not only is the coal industry undertaking aggressive steps to improve its operating meth- ods and its products, but it is also engaging in research programs directed to finding added use for coal and its by-products. The by-products of coal are playing an extremely important part in the everyday lives ot people today. In tact the chemist has been able to transform coal into so many products that it has become the backbone oi many other industries. Each year coal operators meet at a mining congress coal show and 'swap' their experi- ences during the past year with new and improved mining methods and equipment. A great array of mining equipment and supplies is displayed at this meeting. Each year thousands of coal mining men study the manufacturers' exhibits on display and each year there stems from these studies a high outlay of new equipment, which approximates two hundred million dollars. Wise County Coke is known throughout the world for its high grade quality. For they who labor in the earth are the chosen people of God. -THOMAS IEFFERSON. The time will come when so many new and valuable uses will be found for coal as a raw material that the last thing we will think of doing will be to burn it. -CDR. F. S. SINNOTT, Director of the British Fuel Research Stationj A pound of Wise County coal, as taken from the mines, will produce on the average nearly 14,000 British thermal units. This is as much as most of the coal found in the United States will produce.
