NORTONIAN 1960 I NORTON HIGH SCHOOL BARBERTOM OHIO 2 I if f we ' 4 I fp, , A , ,m f fa! ' w f ff T 'f , wg, f I 5. Q fs y 4: 4 fe Q , F F ORE WORD The 1960 Nortonian is a symbol. It is a symbol of everything we, the graduating seniors, have taken part in. This yearbook is a record of our good times, and could never, even in 200 pages, relay all the mem- ories that we have of our Senior year at Norton. The staff has worked hard in order to give you a good yearbook in a short period of time. W'e hope you enjoy it, and we wish you underclassmen much luck and much happiness in the future. f T: DEDICA T10 Dear Mrs. Givler, Xve, the members of the Class of 1960, wish to dedicate our yearbook to you. In this way, we hope to show our appreciation for the big part you have played in making our Senior year a most enjoyable and memorable one. We enjoyed your government classes, a bright spot in our dull day. We loved to hear about the latest exploits of Abby, David, and Sue. SVC were glad that you could tell us about jack Paar's show the night before, because we just could not keep our eyes open to see it. Most of all, we were just glad that you were our teacher. We respected you, and you showed us respect in return. We liked you, and you seemed to like us. - So, in conclusion, we wish to thank you for everything. Maybe this is not the biggest way we could have repayed you, but this to us is the best way. We want to leave you with something to remember us by. This yearbook is a part of us. lt is a digest of our Senior year, a part of our life we shall never forget. Thank you, Mrs. Givler. Thanks for everything. Formerly the director of an Army band, Mr. Douglas became the di- rector of Norton High's marching band. He introduced new marching drills and many new songs. XVe must congratulate Mr. Douglas for a job well done. He has done fine work the first year in a new school with new students. MARCHIN G BAND This year the members of the band received new uniforms which are unique in that the coat can be worn in four different styles. Mr. Doug- las, who was new to Norton this year, took over as band director. The band did a great deal of work in preparing for their three concerts which were given in the high school auditorium. The band also marched in several parades, including the Cherry Blossom and Memorial Day Parades. XVhen our band went to district contests it al- ways brought home collective and individual honors. The biggest job the band has is to provide entertainment at half-time during football games. This year we watched new marching drills and formations. Everyone worked hard to put on wonderful half-time shows for the spec- tators. 1... ,if C. Bird i uf .N Qggre-3'7'r ifna- K if 61 P-BOY' BEAD Tin Yishov YB C 5 Wlff i' MARCH! L At every football game the majorettes lead Norton High's marching band down the field before the game begins and after it is over. During the halftime they provide entertain- ment along with the band. This year new twirling routines and new dances made pleas- ant viewing. Ellen learned to twirl fire and gave a wonderful performance during the last home game. The girls spent many hours practicing to perfect their routines so they would give their best performances on the field. A majorette's job is not always a glor- ious one. They have rugged practice sessions and must march and twirl in all types of weather. All majorettes are also members of the band and play in the concert band after football season. Ellen marched as head ma- jorette this year. This is her second year as a majorette. ,ml t . fs. ' 1 - S 'H Q 4' 'wi.,,q.m C Wi m n 4 G. Our school can be very proud of Mr. Yockey and all the chorus members. When they went to dis- trict contests, several individual members and the entire chorus brought honors home. We have the privilege of hearing the chorus sing at the Thanksgiving, Christ- mas, and Easter assemblies. During these assemblies the chorus is truly awe-inspiring. This year the chorus gave two concerts. One was a combined band and chorus con- cert. The other was a concert featuring junior High and High School Choruses. The highlight of the concert was when our chorus sang the Hallelujah Chorus. Our Chorus is truly the pride of Norton High. Mr. Arden j. Yockey deserves a great deal of credit for making our chorus as fine as it is. He sincerely enjoys music and de votes the majority of his time to it. He be gan his music career at Norton seventeen years ago. At that time and until 1953 he was in charge of all the instrumental sec tions. From 1953 until this year he was in charge of both the instrumental and vocal music sections at Norton. This year he was relieved of some of the work and now is the director of the junior High and High School choruses. Row I: J. Mace, B. Anderson, J. Frase, E. Daugherty, C. Cross, J. Hunt, C. CHESS CLUB The newly-lormed Chess Club already is one of the best attended, most active organizations in the school. Every Thursday evening, the members and their ad- visors get together for an entertaining, thought-pro- voking session. Tournaments provide fine competi- tion lor members who like to argue about who's best, Lessons are provided for the beginners, and they quickly learn that the game which they are taking up is one of the best possible lor teaching organized, logical thinking.
