THIS IS OUR LIFE By Beverly Lady When the furst day of school rolled around un September 1943 Sherman, Norton and Loyal Oak grade schools were mvaded by a bunch of nousy youngsters that were to become the future 1955 Senuors of Norton Hugh School Some of the kuds wanderung around Sherman s furst grade room and cryung for theur mothers were Becky Seuberlung Joe Lupovac Beverly Lady Betty Smuth, Rae Breutenstune, Jum Ham ulton Gene Wuse Margaret Sarka Frances Cerne, .lack Baughman, Ruth Lloyd and Helen Orendas At Loyal Oak they were blessed wuth the presence of Martha Duehm Dorothea Ger hart Daun Merchant Carol Baun Dudy Swauno June Schlauch Bull Brenner Earl Rutzman Buddy Rogers Arlene Thayer and Noel Cowlung Meanwhule at Norton we found Phyllus Brown Martha Maddox Bull Spahr and Carl Schackow Also at Rose Street School un Barber ton Joe Bartzu Carol Graber and Mary Gombasku were busy learnung theur ABC s There was of course a Furst grade rhythm band and un the second grade some of the Sherman kuds were dressed as Chrustmas trees for a program As the years rolled on Sandra Ruchardson transferred to Norton Barbara Leatherman louned the Sherman crew for her fufth year of school and Januce Martun appeared at Loyal Oak La Vonne Baker went to Loyal Oak for the suxth grade Thus was also the year Becky Seuberlung chupped her Front tooth turnung flup Flops over the teeter totter bar at Sherman In the 7th grade Bull Douglas Theua Eckman and Earl Rutzman came to Norton uNnen the otn grade year came around all the kuds from the three schools were unuted at Nlorton to funush theur remaunung years of school together A very shy gurl Iouned the class at thus pount she wouldn't smule at anyone and she dudn t talk much thus was Genevueve Metz The teachers thought they were seeung double but ut was only the knowledge lovung Heller twuns Mr Prasher named Carol Graber Beverly Lady, Barbara Leatherman Mar tha Maddox the Gru Some 4 Some When the fall of 1951 rolled around a bunch of puzzled lookung nousy unduvuduals otherwuse known as Freshmen became a fascunatung addutuon to Norton Hugh School Earl Rutzman was elected Presudent Carl Schackow Vuce Presudent Dudy Swauno Sec retary Januce Martun Treasurer A gurl un a dark red racket louned the class that year she acted real funny and BOY! Could she sneeze Of course ut was Janet Putney Every one loved to tease Janet so she wull always remember the day she started to eat lunch and found a worm un her sandwuch of course ut was only rubber LaVonne Baker served as Homecomung Attendant Barbara Burnley louned the class We acquured two shy boys that y ar Larry Momchulov and Allan Ash Paula Blaur Iourneyed over from Wadsworth to make her home at Norton The gurls wull remember the nerve ut took to ask a boy to the furst Tru Hu Yformal In the Sophomore year Earl Rutzman and Carl Schackow were re elected Dorothea Gerhart Secretary Martha Maddox Treasurer The class chose blue and whute as the class colors and ordered theur rungs and sold Chrustmas cards to rause money For our Junior year we entered the new hugh school E I b P d Muon Ash Dom. The class ran the Junsor store to rasse money for the Prom Larry Momchslov was elected chasrman of Prom commsttee and wsth hss commsttee planned a beautsful prom wsth the theme Hades sncludsng steamsng pot sn the msddle of the floor wsth arms stscksng out The stage was decorated as Heaven wsth angels servsng refreshments The chasrs were cov ered wsth pretty red suede paper the remasns of the paper wsll be used by the art classes for years to come LaVonne Baker Martha Dsehm, Dorothea Gerhart Betty Ann Stump Margaret Sarka Becky Sesberlsng Jansce Martsn Paula Blasr Martha Maddox Janet Putney Ronald Hel ler and Donald Heller became members of the Natsonal Honor Socsety The Junsor class pscnsc was at Clay Park dursng the summer The boys played cards and the gsrls entertasned each other When they went swsmmsng the boys decsded st was too much trouble to put on thesr swsmmsng susts so they went sn sn thesr clothes The day was ended by attendsng a movse All too soon the Sensor year rolled around The same offscers were re elected and Mrs Good and Mr Prasher came along to advsse the Sensors through the year Arlene Lauby and Bob Adams were two bashful addstsons to the class Becky Sesberlsng became Homecomsng Queen wsth Rae Brestenstsne and Carol Baun as Sensor Attendants Becky wsll probably never forget that she msght have drowned sn all the rasn had the game not been postponed The dance went on as scheduled sn the new gym and was very beautsful The Sensors won two fseld trsps by gettsng all thesr parents to losn P T A and Jack Me Keal drove them to vsctory sn the magazsne sale by lectursng them every mornsng The gsr s put on an assembly by playsng football '9 to urge the team on to vsctory The Sensors who For entertasnment Elsnor Ely held open house The Sensors drank gallons of csder and ate dozens of do nuts Along wsth the fun Jack Me Keal and Carl Schackow covered eferythsng wsth water by bobbsng for apples After th last football game of the season Becky Sesberlsng held a slumber party for all the Sensor gsrls Along wsth sloppy soes and pop consumed there was a band ussng pots and pans plus one trumpet The e was also a basketball game at three sn the mornsng a couple of ssck gsrls the next mornsng and a messy house The Trs Hs Y formal theme was Icy lllusson and the gym looked beautsful wsth lsve trees and snow all around The day after the formal when everyone was cleansng up Earl Rstzman Beverly Lady Cora Hartenstsne and Jack Mekeal went to the Home Ec room and Earl made a cup of tea for them and they fsnsshed the cookses left from the refresh ments The Sensor Band made sts debut before the publsc at the Chrsstmas party What a screamf They wsll never forget the Sl 66 they collected when the student body threw en nses and for besng so lousy they won a twoweek expense pasd trsp to Snydertown The VIPS lVery Important Peoplel of the class were Elsnor Ely Pressdent of Trs Hs Y Carl Schackow Pressdent of Student Councsl Joe Bartzs Pressdent of Band Gene Wsse Pressdent of Chosr, Davsd Heller Pressdent of Hs Y Genevseve Metz Edstor of the Torch Barbara Burnley Edstor of the Nortonsan, Noel Cowlsng Pressdent of the Key Club The Sensor year was a wonderful year, but st went awfully fast for some of the sensors and dragged along for others Through the years there wsll be so much to remember the frsendshsps shared some of the frsendshsps wsll contsnue whsle others contsnue sn memory only As the Sensors look forward to sobs college and marrsage they wsll always have a place sn thesr hearts to keep the memorses of Norton ,, ,, . .... . . .
