The Midland Daily News had this to say of the program: Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians said it with music Monday night in Midland just as they have for 53 years across the country. Only Fred and the frog-voiced drummer Poley McClintock remain of the original quartet, but the Fred Waring Show produced music in the modern style and 'songs of yesterday the way they sound today' for the audience at the Town and Campus and Northwood Institute program in Central Intermediate Auditorium. Getting together to share a discussion after the Fred Waring Show were President Arthur E. J 'L Mrs. Hoxie, the Coach wlth Jlm Balch M ,se , X ' I Mrs. Jean Hoxie, Chuck Brainard, and Alden B. Dow .avi :, l ifefnwfwf Z , Mrs. Hoxie was not only our coach . . . She was in many ways like a mother to all of us on the team. I speak for my- self and for all the members of the team in saying that, I am sure. The most difficult thing for all of us to face is the fact that she is no longer here. Sometimes I find myself anticipating unconsciously another practice session with her . . . Until I realize that those practice sessions, which used to seem so rou- tine, but were really very special, will be no more. I think we all feel that one of the most significant things about our relationship with Mrs. H was that she didn't teach us just to be wimiers at tennis-but mainly to be winners in the game of life. We have asked ourselves this question: ' 9 Wh ' th reatest thin we have learned from Mrs. Hoxie?,' A good backhand? An effective drop shot? Good manners. at IS e g g Proper dress? To get an education?-Sure, we have learned all these things-and more. But I think the word I want to use here is attitude, The greatest thing we have as a result of Mrs. Hox1e's teaching IS attitude.-Second best was never good . . . . t t S enou h. There were no excuses. There was no reason good enough to miss practice. For practice was just as lmpor an a 8 the match-If we couldn't win in practice, we wouldn't win when it counted, she said. We could say a lot of things about . . . . b- Mrs. H-We all can recall experiences Wlth her that we will never forget. We could say many more things about her o vious greatness. But we know that she is gone-That rea 1zat1on as y . on in life with something special to help us-That something special which made Mrs. Hoxie what she was-A winner. -Eulogy delivered by Charles Brainard, team representative, at the Jean Hoxie Memorial Servlces. l' ' h finall come to all of us We must go on without her-But we go 15 x Az X . The co-op program affords us an opportunity to demonstrate the sincerity of our interest in their development. Qualified students can actively participate and involve themselves in a variety of roles throughout our company. We vvant this to be a meaningful experience for them . . . and for us. Our aim is to provide students a chance to sharpen their skills and apply classroom knowledge to a real job situation. In so doing, vve hope to earn their respect and gain a better understanding of their desires and aspirations. This should be a meaningful experience for both of us. XT x X Y. AN ACCENT ON YOUTH This is fast becoming a nation of young people. ln fact, very shortly half the population of the United States will be under twenty- five. At Dow Corning, as with many other companies across the country, the younger generation is playing an important role in the com- pany's activities. Why? Because there's a lot of truth in that old saying about there being no substitute for experience -- and that's exactly what young people are getting today so that they can grow into the responsible leaders we will look to for guidance in the years to come. Work-study programs are one way that young people are getting that experience. At Dow Corning, co-op students have jobs in laboratories, production, engineering and offices. Here are five co-op students from high schools and colleges in the Tri-City area who are working in Dow Corning's laboratories.
