Olmstead fmanagerl Tennis Tenms REVIEW The 1953 Northwood tenms team was probably Mr Karrs best ln hrs three years at North wood Mr Karr had the prlvllefre of seemff the number 3 4 and 6 men of hrs flrst season develop thexr talents so that they were able to assume the number l 2, and 3 roles on this year s team This threesome conslsted of Capt John Ryder Brock Whlllnf' and Captam elect Metty Green Splke Pul ltzer Art Wullschleffer and Don Cav rounded out the top slx Probably the most dlsappomtmg part of the season was the opening match loss to the Canton AgglCS Thls needless loss whlch was later avenged to the tune of 90 prevented an undefeated sea son The vxctorles over St Lawrence and Vermont Umverslty Frosh were performed wlth unexpected ease In each case, only two matches were lost The most remarkable feature of thls team was xts balance There were no weak spots on the team as each man had to battle for hrs posltlon The season also brought wlth lt many humorous aspects There was the time when Art Wull schleger was servmg up one of hls overpowermg dellverles , and the recelver swung w1th deyas tatlnv feroclty but before the ball had reached hlm It seems that he was anxious for the completlon of the match, as he had a date Waltlng for hlm On a more serious note there IS no doubt but what each man lmproved hls game conslderably from the begmnmg of the sprmg The last flVC v1ctor1es were proof enough' Page 65 1, . 'K 'islet' Outing Club Last fall Mr Cheseaux began rebulldmg the outmg club whxch had been dlscontmued smce 1954 55 Mr Cheseaux IS teachmg camplng canoelng and woodsmanshlp On most weekends he takes the club on trlps around varxous parts of the Adlrondacks and durmg the week the group flXCS canoes clears brush on skl tralls etc Mr Cheseaux never calls off trlps on account of weather condltlons whlch make some of the trlps more lnterestmg as well as teaching the boys how to keep comfortable The first trlp thls sprmg was a Skl trip to Avalanche Pass By the next weekend the ICC was out of the lakes and a canoe trlp was held from Lake Flower to Lower Saranac Lake The canoes came to a lock towards the end of the afternoon and after fl urlng how to operate lt went a few hundred yards upstream to camp It snowed all nlght but dldnt plle up Mr Holt was a guest of the outmg club on its thlrd trlp Thls tlme the members had to make a mlle portage because of strong headwlnds At the end of the portage they cooked lunch and pad dled ln the ram for three mlles to the campmg s1te chosen for that nlght It stopped ra1n1n by morn mg and the weather was beautlful for the last half of the trxp On the weekend of the ,Iumor College Board Exams Mr Cheseaux declded to 1nv1te about twen tv boys on an over mght camplng trlp on Moose Island ln Lake Placld Several people went swlm mm ln the chlllw waters Metty Green and Ned Tyree trled to fell a solld old beech tree at 10 00 that evenmg and after a half hour of chopplng the tree swayed gently Into a cedar tree and stopped Next fall the outm club plans to go over the cross country Skl tralls wlth brush scythes and flll 1n the deeper holes The large brush has already been taken out thls sprlng ln order to make the job easler ln the fall Sometlme ln the future Mr Cheseaux plans to start a mountam chmbmg and a fxre frghtmg group He also hopes to start a flrst ard and skl patrol program Page 67 NV Q in .
