vocal muslc lnstructor of our school and we started our weekly trek through the mtermedxate buxldmg to her room Th1s was the year we staged an orlg mal drama to the accompamment of Peter and the Wolf wlth Danny Andersen as Peter Mary Allxson as the Wolf Juanxta Hanson as the bearded Grandfather and Karen Baken as the Duck Mavls Bakken Jomed our class th1s year When we were promoted to fourth grade we were excxtmgly close to the Bxg Bu1ld1ng W watched the Jumor h1gh actlvxtles wlth envious eyes and even took a small part Gary Owens Karen Baken and Mary Alllson were cheerleaders for the flfth grade whlch was allowed to play ln the tournaments It was 1n fourth grade that Dor1s Gleason Margery Perry and Kenny Gullxckson Jomed the class Fnfth grade brought us st11l closer and our 11st of actxvxtles grew Jack Elwell Jomed our class and was made a member of the flfth grade sextet Gary Owens Betty Logemann Juanlta Hanson lvlaxyne Anderson Karen Baken and of course Jack Durene Grube returned to our class and a new addltlon was Dorothy Rabe who had recently been a po11o patlent When we were promoted to sixth grade we had arrlved Our ambltxon to do everythmg posslble was fulfllled wxth the result that we wore out four teachers Mlss Everest was the fxrst She sponsored health contests and she had one for zeadmg too wxth books as prlzes She was re placed by Mrs Helgeland then Mrs Baken and Miss Norma Stene fmxshed out the year ThlS was ln whlch most of us were gmgerbread men In our seventh year of school Dale Sandberg returned to our class and there were two other permanent addltxons Ben Rolsen and a pudgy l1ttle fellow from MlhHe8D01lS Loren Markel Basll Ja cobson was xn our class then but returned to Em metsburg at the end of the year Th1s was the year when elghth graders had a huge appeal and the slxdlng desk tops served as convement mallboxes Elghth grade was our last year ln grade school and we had stretched our 11st of actlvltles as far as posslble Several of us were m band and some of the boys were smgmg 1n the h1gh school glee club We w1ll remember Kenny Fredrlckson and h1s beautxful tenor volce Brldges were belng bullt then on Hlghway 105 and some of the workers chlldren came to our school Jean Harlo Davis Tommy Wllford and Kenny Perryman Mavis Hauge also joined our class Our exghth grade 1mportance was rapldly reduced when we started h1gh N1nth grade' and our flrst encounters w1th the h1gh school crowd and pxnk slxps Permanent addltlons Roslne Hanson Delores Gentz Loren Iverson Jan Reed Allan Johnson Lynn Tews Art Moretz Wayne Lexdal Carol Read Mary Davxdson Shlrley Esk11dsen Shxrley H1nds Rxchard Moen Robert Nelson and V1rg1n1a Nelson were qulckly broken m to the Northwood school system 1n Mlss Garr1sons alge bra class Well remember Mxss Selleck s tests and we CAN'T forget Mr Gaarders cheers for the 'Town Lxbrary our game of Rabbxt and Cle dxth the books and the venetlan blind cord Mary Juanxta and Karen started debat1ng thls year and Allan Johnson was a member of the best parlxa mentary procedure team ln the state Mlster Paul Bolle took over as prmclpal when we were sophomores We wxll remember Mr Bes tuls world hxstory class and Miss Kennedys clase de espanol Madelme Burns jomed our class ln tenth grade and so dxd Larry Foss J1m Struck Shlrley Hansen Joan Mlkkelson Marnan Hempen and B111 Grxffxth Wrestlmg started this year wlth Mr W1st1e as coach and this was the year that Northwood took the Worth County basketball champxonshlp away from Fertlle 1n an overt1me thrlller We reached a chmax 1n our Junlor year of h1gh school Mr Clme back from the Marmes and Mlss Ruth Norland collaborated on our Jumor class play and emerged wlth a huge success Ramshackle Inn had record crowds' Other speech act1v1t1es h1t the top too Danny Andersen ln the lead role of the one act play and dramatic declamatxon as well went to the state contest along Wlth Karen Mary and Juanita ln oratxon extemporaneous speakmg and mterpretatxve readmg The debate team Karen Mary Juamta and Meda Nelson a sen1or placed second 1n the state m the forenslc contest Allan Johnson won a gold medal at the state FFA contest wlth h1s team s program of work In muslc too the Jumors were among the leaders FIVE flrst places were awarded to Junlor soloists three of whlch went to Karen Baken for her vocal solo flute solo and student conductmg and slx fxrst places were awarded to groups composed par t1ally of Jumors Th1s year the concert band the mlxed chorus and the boys glee club also won fxrst places The basketball team of 53 won second place 1n the Worth County tournament Flrst place Fertxle We adopted Neptunes Court as the theme for our banquet and ln cooperatlon wlth the class of 53 were the flrst Junior class to have both a ban quet and a prom At 3 00 a m some of our mothers served a complete breakfast whlch was donated by local merchants We w1ll remember Dannys The Button developmg fllms xnsxde cabmets of the chemlstry lab, and flsh nets and papler mache At the begxnnxng of our sen1or year Mary Davxd son replaced Danny as edltor of the V1k1ng Juanita and Danny won the fu'st places ln the state ln feature and news wrxtmg respectlvely Joan Mxk kelson won an honorable mentxon at the Drake Umverslty meetmg of the Iowa Hxgh School Jour nallsts Mary Davidson and Danny Jomed debate to help compose an all sen1or squad This year the basketball team won thxrd place m the Worth County tournament Now we are at the end of our h1gh school career There are forty three m our class We have ga1ned and lost students, but eleven of the orxgmal elghteen are stlll classmates Durmg our hugh school years we have lost many fxve Jomed the mxlltary servxce flve marrxed, and n1ne started thelr careers early The rest of us are now ready to begm In our thlrteen years of school we have d1scouraged forty two teachers but we have helped defeat the Axxs we have won a record number of awards and we have learned
