In 1954 a bond issue was ap- proved for a new elementary school, highway 105 west of Northwood, newly paved, came into full hard use, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church was completed. Mercury vapor lighting and black-topped streets in the residential districts are iust a few among the many re- cent improvements. So we, the senior class of 1954, conscious of Northwood's rapid expansion in the past, dedicate this yearbook to Northwood's future growth and potentialities. Dave Johnson cracked a vertebra and both Danny And- ersen and Bob Micklick suffered broken legs. There were thirty-eight boys out in '54, all of whom very seldom missed a practice. Although several regular starters were grad- uated, the team retained good material upon which to rely in coming years. Here's hoping future teams can achieve a good spirit and better winning percentages than the Vikings of '54. Homecoming game Seuon's Record Northwood Opponents 0 45 Ansgar 0 ........................ Seven Concerts, from Classics Carol Neale was the concert band's representative in the All-State Band in Des Moines during Thanksgiv- ing vacation. Then, the Christmas season saw the band presenting the first of its three concerts, the Christ- mas Concert, and as the year progressed, the Mid-Winter and Spring Concerts were given. The band par- ticipated in a series of exchange concerts with the Osage and Manly bands, Several new instruments were added: A bass clarinet, two Scotch drums and two concert snares. In Mid-March thirty-five NHS instrumentalists participated in the newly organized North Iowa Confer ence Band Festival at Forest City, and later in March six Viking members invaded Luther College for the Dorian Band Festival. Spring saw the band preparing for the state music contests. And thus ended another year for the NHS Concert Band. Page 40 Saxerud Studio B X Aiwa ?? if mln r A A Y I :X Y ' gk? Senne, A The Girls' Athletic Association is run on an honor basis with a point system to determine awards. The only girls club in NHS, it promoted good sportsmanship and stimulated participation in athletic competition. This group worked nearly all year as an independent organization. The GAA was the largest group during 1954 in addition to being one of the most active. Dur- ing the year it sponsored hikes, skating, swim- ming and bowling parties, and a volley-ball tour- nament, as well as operating the checkroom at home basketball games. Perhaps the event that will be remembered best was the traditional Sno Ball, the one occa- sion of the year when the girls take the initia- tive. It is always strictly a date affair, and this year had the theme Winter Wonderland. Page 50 Worth County Co-Op Oil Company - Tydol Gasoline and Veedol Tractor 8: Motor Oil Osmundson, D. Nelson, M.
