Sports-77 Falcons Outstanding in Jamboree The Northwood Falcons took the field for the first time in 1971 and came away with impressive one-quarter victories over Wood- lawn and North Caddo. In the first quarter against the Knights from Woodlawn the Fal¬ cons scored a 6-0 victory. The lone score of the quarter came on an 85 yard punt return by James Jackson. The defense should be credited with a great deal as they held Woodlawn to no first downs. The second quarter pitted the North Caddo Rebels against the Falcons. The Falcons again ended up on top by the tally of 7-0. The score came on a run by Freddie Jackson which capped a long drive and PAT by Bob Bunton. The defense again deserves credit, as they held the Rebels at the Falcon four-yard line. Bob Berney Senior End Letterman Lane Bonds Senior Halfback Letterman Richard Carter Senior Fullback Freddie Jackson sprints around end. Indians Outduel the Falcons The Falcons came onto the field as the underdogs, but gave the Fair Park Indians a handful of trouble. The Falcons played flawless football for the first half and went into the intermission with a 13-7 lead. The Falcons had scored on their first two possessions. One came on 17-yard run by Curtis Treece. The other came on a 9-yard journey by Freddie Jackson. Bob Bunton added the PAT. The key to the success in the first half was due to the fine blocking of the offensive line consisting of: cen¬ ters Rodney Lummus and Melvin Phillips, guards Butch Procell and Steve Eakin, tackles Randy Keen and Will Coynes, and ends David Doughty, Alan Hargis, and Mike Terhune. The line opened gaping holes in the Fair Park defense for the backs. After the first half, the Falcons were unable to put any more points on the board. The defense valiantly held off the Indians for a while, but were unable to stop them from scoring twice more. Ken Crain Senior Halfback Letterman David Doughty Senior End Letterman Curtis Treece heads for daylight. Stuart Funk Senior Quarterback Letterman r Falcons Slay Giants The Falcons won their first game of the season by beating Green Oaks by the convincing score of 35-3. The Falcons, led by the running of Freddie Jackson who gained 139 yards, rolled up 375 yards in total offense. The defense was equally impressive as they held Green Oaks to but 15 yards total offense. The defense was also the first to put points on the board as they got a safety on Green Oaks ' punter. Then the offense took over as their first score came on 27-yard pass from Stuart Funk to David Doughty. Freddie Jackson added the next three scores on runs of one, five, and two yards. Bob Bunton kicked the PAT after each of these scores. The final Falcon tally came on a 22-yard scoring strike from Chip Layton to Shell Stephenson. The win left the Falcons with an overall record of 1-1, but more important a district record of 1-0. Will Coynes Senior Tackle Letterman Freddie Jackson Senior Tailback Letterman Stuart Funk is pulled down. Rodney Mercer Senior Tackle Letterman Falcons Cage the Cougars The Falcons, looking for revenge after last year ' s loss to Bethune, started off slow but gained momentum to defeat the Cougars 24-7. Freddie Jackson had another outstanding game gaining 183 yards in 24 carries. He also scored once on a three yard run. This was the second score of the night. The first tally, set up by Ken Crain ' s fumble recovery at the Bethune 19, came on 29-yard scoring toss from Stuart Funk to James Jackson. The other TD resulted from a 24-yard aerial to Alan Hargis from Funk. Bob Bunton who added all the PATs also booted a 25-yard field goal. The defense again has credit due as they held Bethune in check all night, except for their lone tally which came after a Falcon fumble at our own 16-yard line. The defense consisting of nose guard Mike McGowan, tackles Rodney Lummus and Randy Keen, ends Will Goynes and Melvin Phillips, linebackers Freddie Jackson, Steve Eakfn, Curtis Treece, and defensive backs Lane Bonds, Gar¬ land Roberts, James Jackson, and Alan Hargis held the Cougars to 62 total yards and two first downs. Senior Bullback Letterman James Bailey Junior End Letterman Johnny Choyce Junior Halfback Letterman Falcons Upset by Rebels A determined bunch of North Caddo Rebels came onto the field with visions of upset, and came away with exactly that with a 20- 15 victory over die never-say-die Falcons. The Falcons, who had fallen behind by the count of 20-0 in the fourth quarter, rallied back behind the passing of Stuart Funk who passed for 261 yards, most of that coming in the closing minutes. The first score of the night for the Falcons came on a five yard run by Freddie Jackson with 8:00 left in the contest. The PAT was added when Funk hit Bob Bunton for two points. The Falcons moved quickly to another score as Jackson plunged over from four yards out. Bob Bunton added the PAT to make the score 20- 15 with 5:00 re¬ maining in the game. The Falcons got the ball once again but were unable to make a first down and the ball went back over to the Reb¬ els. The Falcons had made a valiant attempt to come back but just could not overcome the five lost fumbles they suffered, three of which the Rebels converted into scores. The loss left Northwood at 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the district race. Dennis Gore Bob Bunton adds a PAT against Parkway. Junior Tackle Falcons Edged By Flyers Alan Hargis junior End Letterman Roger Hayes Junior Guard Letterman The traditional battle between Northwood and Jesuit was a well- fought contest and a tough loss for the Falcons. The Falcons reached paydirt first as Freddie Jackson scored from the two yard-line. Bob Bunton added the PAT. The touchdown was set up by a 43-yard pass from Stuart Funk to David Doughty. But Jesuit would not die and scored two successive touchdowns. The Fal¬ cons battled back to a 14- 14 tie at halftime when Freddie Jackson scored from the one yard line. Bob Bunton split the uprights for the PAT. This was in vain however, as the Flyers went on to score a third - quarter touchdown. The Falcons also had a scoring threat in the third - quarter but, fumbled at Jesuit ' s one yard line. James Jackson Junior Halfback Letterman It took more than one to tackle Jeff Kent. Randy Keene Junior Tackle Letterman Chip Layton Junior Quarterback Letterman Falcons Pulverize Parkway The Falcons took the field for their annual Homecoming, and came away with an impressive victory. Parkway was the first to score, but after that it was all Falcons as they never had to punt all night. The first Falcon to draw blood was Freddie Jackson as he scored from the one-yard line. Bob Bunton added the PAT as he did for all the Falcon scores. Next David Doughty scored on a 14-yard pass from Stuart Funk. Freddie Jackson scored his second TD of the night on a one yard run. Another Funk to Doughty pass for 28 yards put the Falcons ahead 28-7 at the half. Then in the second half the second team took up the slack as they scored 3 TD ' s. The scores all came on runs as Jeff Kent went across from the two, James Jackson scampered for 34 yards, and Bob Bunton bulled over from the one-yard line. Parkway added another score in the fourth quarter leaving the final tally at 49- 14. The victory left the Falcons 3-3 overall and 3-2 in district. Springhill took the early lead 7-0, but the Falcons would not be denied this game. The Falcons marched down the field and scored on a 26 yard aerial from Stuart Funk to James Jackson. The Falcons took the lead for good with 27 seconds left in the half, on a Funk to David Doughty scoring strike covering 14 yards. The Falcons offense was paced by the running of Freddie Jackson and Curtis Treece who gained 134 and 44 yards, respectively. The Falcons had many scoring opportunities but were thwarted by either fumbles or Springhill ' s defense. Northwood ' s defense played another good game, holding Springhill scoreless after the early score. Mike Terhune Junior End Letterman Ray Wise Junior Halfback Letterman North wood Bounces Bossier The Falcons took the field as the underdogs against the Bearkats and left it with their third straight win. Bossier took the early lead 7-0 as they recovered their own fumble in the end zone for their first score. The Falcons closed the gap to 7- 6 on a one yard jaunt by Freddie Jackson. The extra point attempt failed resulting from a high snap from the center. Bossier took the lead again 14-6 with 7:31 left in the half. The Falcons though came back with a quick four-pi ay drive with the payoff coming on a 36- yard Funk to Jackson pass. Funk hit Bob Bunton, who made a good catch in the corner of the end zone, for the two point conversion. That is the way it stood at half, 14-14. The Falcons added the go- ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard scamper by Freddie Jackson. For the night Jackson had 95 yards and was aided by Curtis Treece, who lugged for an additional 42 yards. This win gave the Falcons a 5-3 overall record and 5-2 in the district, with still a chance to reach the state playoffs. Jim Clemens James Bailey, after an interception, heads for 6. Soph. Halfback North wood Rolls Over Minden; 34- 14 This win made it four straight for the Falcons, who were eyeing a playoff spot. The Falcons hit paydirt first, when Freddie Jackson scored on a 31-yard pass from Stuart Funk. Bob Bunton added the PAT, as did for three other scores. Jeff Kent added the next score on a four- yard jaunt. After the intermission the Falcons, leading 14-7, tallied on a 12-yard scoring strike from Funk to David Doughty. Funk also add¬ ed the next tally on a two-yard scamper. Freddie Jackson finished the scoring for the night, running an interception back 55 yards. For the evening, Freddie finished with 176 yards rushing, sec¬ ond best performance for the season. The Falcons still had hopes for the playoffs with a brilliant comeback string. Steve Davis Soph. Tackle Northwood to the Playoffs: Defeat Haughton 26-21 The Falcons took the field in their biggest game of the year and throttled the Haughton Buccaneers to advance to the State Playoffs. The Falcons wasted no time in putting points on the board, as on the first play from scrimmage, Stuart Funk found Alan Hargis for a 59-yard scoring toss. Later in the same quarter Funk lofted another scoring pass, this one 27 yards to David Doughty, Bob Bunton added the PAT. The next Falcon score came in the second quarter when Freddie Jackson burst over the goal from one yard out. Bob Bunton added the PAT once again. With a Haughton score, the halftime score stood at 20-6 in favor of the Falcons. After a scoreless third quarter, the Falcons once again put points on the board on a 9-yard pass from Stuart Funk to Freddie Jackson. Late in the fourth quarter Haughton added two scores leaving the final tally 26-21 making the game appear closer than it actually was. The real key to the victory was the outstanding play of the defense. They shut down the powerful Haughton running game to a mere 88 yards. They consistently gave the ball to the offense in good field position. The win gave the Falcons a 7-3 overall record, and more important a playoff berth with a 7-2 district record. Tackle Letterman Rams Spoil Falcons ' Hope, 30-18 Northwood, playing in the state playoffs for the third time in four years, battled the top ranked Richwood Rams in the bi-district playoff. The Falcons fought a determined battle but came out on the losing end. The first scoring of the night was a five-yard run by Freddie Jackson. This score was set up by a bad snap from the center on a punt. Although the Falcons had other scoring opportunities, this was the only tally they could muster in the first half. Richwood added two scores to make it 16-16 at intermission. The Falcons came out of the dressing room with new life and proceeded to put two scores on the board. The Falcons ' first score, capping a 70 yard drive, was a four-yard burst by Curtis Treece. The other score, a one-yard plunge by Freddie Jackson, finalized a 67 yard march. This put the Falcons ahead, 18-16. The TD ' s came as a result of ball control offense. The Falcons were able to run off 29 plays to 4 for Richwood in the first 13 minutes of the second half. . , , , , , Richwood was able to score twice, finishing the scoring at 30-18. The Falcons had played a much closer game than the score showed. The Rams felt the desire of the scrappy band of Falcons. The final game of the season left the Falcons with a final 7-4 record. The Falcons did a lot of things that nobody had expected. The Falcons had been down but never out, as they went on to gain the runner-up spot in the district. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; For always there will be great¬ er and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. BE YOURSELF. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of yourth. Nuture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress your¬ self with imaginings. Many fears are bom of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a whole¬ some discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have the right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations. In the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Found in Old Saint Paul ' s Church, Baltimore; Dated 1692 LISTEN CAREFULLY, SENIORS. IT IS YOUR SONG.
