Although the Falcons had team spirit, determination, lots of practice, and many loyal fans, our season was not quite as successful as we had anticipated. Also recognition to the coaching staff for their many hours of planning should be shown by all the loyal Falcons! SITTING: Coach Miller. Ray Wise. Robert Bryant Senior Fullback Letterman I North wood 24 Leesville 12 The Falcons bagged themselves a Wampuscat in the opening football game of the season. Northwood lit up the scoreboard first when Philip Jackson vaulted over from the one yard line. Scott’s extra point attempt was blocked. Ricky Hailey put up the second score from the two yard line. Again Scott’s kick was blocked. The last touchdown of the first half came as Stewart Funk drilled an 11 stripe bull’s eye to David Doughty. The Fal¬ cons went for two but failed. The Falcon defense held the Wampuscats scoreless in the second half while the offense added 6 points when Philip Jackson charged over from the one yard line. The try for two failed. Coaches (BOTTOM) Ken Thomas; James Farrar, Flead Coach; James Carter (TOP) Don Miller; Jerry Burton; Lynn Mitchell. Hollis Davis Senior Tackle Letterman II Northwood 22 Linear 6 After overcoming 5 fumbles, 1 pass interception and 3 injured tail¬ backs, the Falcons whipped Linear 22-6. Northwood held the Wildcats to a minus 11 yards rushing. North wood’s scores came on a 1 yard run by Philip Jackson, a 17 yard pass from Funk to Doughty. Ricky Hailey also scored on a quart¬ erback sneak from the 1 yardline. Other scores came on 2 PAT’s by Scott and a safety by the rugged defensive unit. Mike Grant Senior Split End Letterman III “Speedy Jackson ' outruns pursuit. John Graves Senior End Letterman I Larry Griffin Senior Flanker Letterman III Ricky Hailey Senior Quarterback Letterman III Philip Jackson Senior Tailback Letterman I Bethune 12 Northwood 7 The error-plagued Falcons lost three fumbles in addi¬ tion to having a costly pass intercepted. A brilliant 92- yard punt return by Larry Griffin put the Falcons on the scoreboard first and Scott’s kick added one in the first quarter. The Falcons kept the lead after Bethune failed on a run for a two point conversion following their open¬ ing touchdown. A Falcon pass intercepted gave the Cou¬ gars another score in the second quarter. Northwood’s defense created a number of offensive opportunities, but the go team was unable to capitalize on them. Coach Farrar gives vital instructions to Todd Simons. Royoe Page Senior Center Letterman I Larry Pettiette Senior Flanker Letterman I Ross Prewett Senior End Letterman I John Robertson Senior Tackle Letterman III North wood 21 North Caddo 8 Following the lead of Fastback Philip Jackson, who galloped for 101 yards on 17 carries, the Northwood Falcons put down their rival, the Rebels of North Caddo. Todd Simons added 56 stripes on 13 car¬ ries, and scored on runs of three and one yards. The other Falcon touchdown came on a one-yard run by quarterback, Ricky Hailey. Many phases of football were executed in this game; fumbles, touch- backs, bobbles, two-point conversion pass, a safety and a lot of Luck. Managers: James Light; Tommy Mars; Robert Thomas; and Dennis Gore Mike Ryder Senior Guard Letterman III Northwood 14 Jesuit 0 The Northwood Falcons broke Jesuit’s jinx of past years by down¬ ing them with a 14-0 final count. Although dominating the statistics chart with twice as many first downs, yards, yards rushing, and pass¬ ing yardage, Northwood showed power also in defense. Coach James Farrar called this the “sweetest” victory ever. The Falcons scores came by Mike Grant on a 15 yard pass from Ricky Hailey and by Todd Simons on a two-yard blast. Both of Scott’s kicks were good. The entire defensive unit played an outstanding game. The Falcon front-four, including Mike Ryder, Ricky Swafford, Butch Procell, and Toby Tolbert, was especially tough. Scotty Scott Senior Guard Letterman III Sports — 110 Todd Simons Senior Fullback Letterman III Ricky Swafford Senior Tackle Letterman II Jack Tolbert Senior Tackle Letterman I Northwood 35 Parkway 6 The fighting Falcons of Northwood trampled the Parkway Panther’s 35-6 to stay in the District 1-AAA ti¬ tle contention. Three fumble recoveries and an interception led to four of the Falcons tallies. This win raised Northwoods slate to a 5-1 overall. Speedster Larry Griffin grabbed touchdown passes of 8 and 27 stripes. Ri cky Hailey showed his outstand¬ ing ability to play “dodge defenders” while scrambling 52 yards for six. A fumble recovery was picked up by alert Ricky Swafford on Northwood’s 8, and carried to paydirt. Junior Bob Bunton picked off a Panther pass and crossed 42 stripes in finding the goal. Scotty Scott split the uprights after each score. Parkways score came in the third quarter on a 16 yard toss from the Panther quarterback. Tailback Philip Jackson averaged an astounding 8 stripes per carry against the Panthers. Toby Tolbert Senior Tackle Letterman I Bob Berney Junior End John Wixon Senior Center Letterman I Lane Bonds Junior Flanker Letterman I Northwood 0 Springhill 34 The Northwood Falcons were upset by Springhill with a 34-0 Final count. Remarkable Charles McDaniels gave the Falcon’s defense much trouble, scoring 4 touchdowns. James Harris also scored on a T.D. for the opponent. The only thing Northwood had to be happy about was the home¬ coming festivities. David Doughty Junior End Lelterman II Steve Eakin Junior Guard Letterman I Bob Bunton Junior Tailback Letterman II Kenneth Crain Junior Flanker Sports — 112 “You lead this dance”. Stewart Funk Junior Quarterback Letterman II Bossier 9 Northwood 7 The Falcons shredded Bossiers heretofore rugged defense for 239 yards rushing while the Bearkats managed 133. The Falcons passed for 44; the Kats, 39. Statisticly, Northwood had the better of the bat¬ tle. Bossier’s only touchdown came in the second period; PAT kick failed. Northwood drove 65 yards for a score which came on Philip Jackson’s one-yard blast in the third quarter. Scott’s PAT put the Falcons on top. The Bearkats went ahead in the fourth quarter by the margin of a kicker’s toe. Freddie Jackson Jr. Fullback Lelterman I James Johnson Soph. Guard Northwood 7 Minden 6 Larry Griffin intercepted a game saving Conrad Reeves ' aerial in the end zone and scampered 101 yards for Northwood’s only score, the longest romp in District 1-AAA this year. Scott added the neces¬ sary point. The Tides ' score came in the second quarter on a two-yard run. The Falcon defensive unit deserves much credit in the well-fought battle. Randy Keene Soph. Center Chip Layton Soph. Quarterback But I can’t crawl a hundred yards Coach. Northwood 7 Haughton 14 Although losing to the Buccaneers by points, the Falcons stomped Haughton on the statistics chart having 18 first downs to the opponents 5; and a total of 282 yards to Haughton’s 80. Northwood’s score came as Philip Jackson punched over from the two. Scotty Scott’s PAT was good. The Falcons played ball control the entire second half, limiting Haughton to only 10 offensive plays. The Falcons, having a hard time finding pay-dirt were inside the Bucs 5 yard line twice and did not score because of errors. Haughton’s scores also came in the second quarter on a 70 yard kick¬ off return and an eight yard run. Simons takes a rest. Rodney Lummus Junior Tackle Letterman II Mike McGowan Soph. Gene Bevill. Kenny Cameron. Frederick Gray, Melvin Phillips, and G.W Gibson The 1970-71 basketball team didn’t exactly meet with the greatest suc¬ cess. The Falcons maintained a perfect record until late in the season when they managed to upset Springhill and then later knocked off Jesuit for their only two wins. The final record was 2-21, 2 and 12 in district play. Statistically the Falcons were in as bad a shape. The only single game rec¬ ord broken this year was the most fouls; forty-five in the Southwood game. The only hope for the Falcons is next year, as they only lost three seniors. Being a young ball club, the Falcons should do better next year although it would be rather difficult to do worse. Gene Bevill — Senior Coach Carter advises the Falcons. In each year of the school’s history, the baseball team has had a different coach, and each year they have won the district title. The district winning coaches have been James Farrar, Bill Ziegler, and Phillip Johnson. The Falcons had a season record of 16-1-5 and a district record of 14-0.
