Text from Pages 1 - 240 of the 1968 volume:

Toward Fulfilling a Dream For years a new school in our area was a dream hoped for, planned for, and worked toward by many dedicated people. Now that dream is a reali¬ ty, and we, the students and faculty, are a part of the establishment of a tradition. 2 3 Toward Academic Excellence Northwood is exceptional in that it is a combination of junior high and senior high. A diversified curriculum allows students to succeed to the best of their abilities. 6 A New Concept in Design THE TALON 1968 EDITOR... KATHY CLAY CO-EDITOR JOHNNY JUNEAU Toward a New Spirit A coura geous falcon, with its outspread wings guarding the Northwood ideals, is firmly perched atop the shield. The flames surrounding the shield depict the burning de¬ sire of youth. The North Star, engraved with an N, signifies the guiding influence of North- wood in the northern part of the state. The map of Louisiana symbolizes Northwood ' s location; a fleur-de-lis, symbol of Louisiana ' s French heritage, marks the location of our campus on the map. The four columns repre¬ sent the four phases of growth: social, spiritu¬ al, physical, and mental. The tree denotes our wooded campus and symbolizes life’s many fortunes. The gauntlet symbolizes the herald¬ ry of falconry, power, the pursuit of chal¬ lenge, sport, physical achievement. The mot¬ to reminds us of the importance of education in our lives. 10 Toward Athletic Achievement These young falcons have taken a worthy task upon themselves-to try to exemplify the spirit of this young but bold new school. They have worked long and hard to bring honor to North wood. Through their efforts, these teams displayed a spirit that magnetized the student body as they followed the growth of these young men into the mighty Falcons of tomorrow. Junior Achievement Junior Achievement is a nationwide organization made up of a local high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The whole organization is divided into several companies, each deriving its name from its production service. Each company has a group of supervisors who teach the students free enterprise. The students sell stock for capital, with which they buy materials to start their company. Each member of the company is a member of the board of directors and has a right to vote at the board of directors meeting held each month. Offic ers are elected at the first of the year and the middle of the year. The assembly line is set up in a way in which produc¬ tion will be efficient. The officers and assembly line workers are paid a salary and wages as decided on by the board of directors. At the end of the year the company liquidates. The stockholders are then paid, and if the company has operated efficiently during the year the stockholders will earn a dividend. Even if the company doesn ' t make a profit, the members learn enough about the business world to compensate for the loss. Their outstanding accomplishments have been recognized throughout the area. After a short six-months existence, the team traveled to L.S.U. in Baton Rouge for interstate competition. The cadets re¬ turned with the spoils of victors in the form of trophies and ribbons. Out-of-state trips were made to Arling¬ ton and Houston; competitions were also held at Orange, competitions paying off in dividends to fun and success. Older teams were awed by the fine showing of North- wood ' s six Falcon Firers. They fired the shots that brought Northwood the praise. Northwood ' s Pep Squad, sponsored by Mrs. Lanell Breithaupt, consists of fifty-four sophomore, junior, and senior girls clad in orange and white. These girls have dedicated long hours after school to learning cheers, making spirit posters, and baking cakes for cake sales. The Pep Squad sponsored the most illustrous event of the year. Slave Day, which followed a week-long sale of all Pep Squad members and the cheerleaders. This sale, foot¬ ball and basketball games, pep rallies, and other events have added to a successful year for Northwood ' s Pep Squad. OFFICERS Candy Rapattoni. President Carolyn Flawthornc. V. Pres.
